No, not really. Clubs demonstrably fast-track player development by getting AFL games into them.
Except us. Development comes from VFL time. Just look at Atkins, Zuthrie, Miers and Close. SDK would have been the same if they played during Covid.

The elephant in the room is Tom Hawkins retirement. It will leave a gaping hole. Ended 2022 as No 1 goal scorer (67) and No 1 in score involvements (218). Zero chance of finding a single player who can fill the void.

I reckon Tommy will be right for 2-3 more. Fingers crossed.

Left field future option that the club would have at least spoken about.

Take Busslinger in the draft to play intercepting Key Back.
SDK turns into a gun forward.

Not sure what our rookie spots will be like but if someone like Scully is there ...it would not be the worst option.... but the simple fact is Hawkins was so highly rated... no way we are getting access to that type any time soon. It would be like picking Cadman this year if Cadman had won the Larke medal.

Henry was touted to be a top 10 and not really targeted by the Cats. The were all in on Holmes and traded up with Richmond to get their man.

Not sure if they would have picked Henry over Holmes if he had slipped further to 20... glad it didn't eventuate.

A trial game, the Treloar trade, and Cats’ interest: behind Ollie Henry’s Pie rise

Remember selwood was in our draft room that night so unless hes lying (and i dont see why he would) its pretty clear our recruiting team was just as keen on henry as we were on holmes.

The Pies should take the 25 for Henry and the 27 for Grundy and trade that to GWS for pick 15.

Take 15 and 16 to the draft.

We are simply not going to be able to replace him like for like. That’s a given. It’s not the end of the world though. If Melbourne can win a flag with Ben Brown at FF there’s hope for anyone.

We also could hardly hope for a better young key forward prospect than Shannon Neale. Just need to find a way to get games into him.

Almost no chance a club takes him before 25 if he isn't talking to them.

Pies are snookered here.

Even if a club did take him in the ND, surely it wouldn't be in the 1st round and interstate club.
So that leaves clubs potentially like the dogs, hawks, dons that may have picks in the 20's before our 25.
But... Henry might prefer to go to them to get out of Collingwood anyway + getting more $$$ from them than what the Pies were offering.

So it could be best case he gets to us, then next best would be going somewhere else non interstate.

He is gone though and they'll trade him to us for sure... It's just a matter of time.
Only thing I hope for is we don't add on extra to that #25.

People that mention anything #7 related to this trade need to be locked up... That's crazy talk.

I think we will add something...just like Clark was added too. Not sure what as ..now we have zero to give

A Mooney type from someone else ... or maybe a Ottens type resting ruck forward. Fatehr Sons like Hawkins are once ia. life time type deal.

Definitely unders IMO. A second year forward not being in a club’s best 23 come finals is not an issue, FWIW Hawkins wasn’t in our finals team in his second season either (not comparing the two as players - just pointing out that there’s nothing uncommon about a talented player taking time to find consistency).

Ollie still finished 4th in Collingwood’s goalkicking this year - he sealed games v Hawthorn and Carlton with clutch sets shots late in the game and he kicked four v Freo after coming on as the sub.

Pies fans are not exaggerating when they say he’s their second best young prospect behind N Daicos.

I would have traded #18 for him in a heartbeat and sorted something else for Bruhn. If we get him for #25 it will go down as one of our biggest steals in recent history.

I'd suggest 25 is around the money for what we've seen from Henry over his first two years, even with him taken as a first round draft pick

Just because he was taken with pick 17 doesn't mean he's held his value at around that position. I'd suggest that's similar for a lot of first round picks after just a couple of years in the system - first round draft picks traded after just 2 or 3 years generally seem to have lost some value & are traded for later picks than they were selected with, while later draft selections seem to increase in value & teams will often get more for them

There's no better example than Josh Schache - #2 in 2015, played 27 matches across two seasons for Brisbane where he kicked 25 goals. He was then traded for picks 25 & 40

Henry's had a good start to his career, but there's no doubt a big part of the trade discussion at the moment is going to be about Collingwood wanting compensation for the player he may potentially become, while Geelong would no doubt putting some focus on what's been shown to date

We said that about :
-Boris--we get Stewart
-GAS--we get Hawkins- different but similar impact
-GAJ-- we get Danger
-Scarlett--we get DeKoning

As I have said and thought for a long time, We Are Geelong, and there IS always something great to look forward to, PLUS, we seem to have an awesome system of development

Let us not forget our latest #5 Premiership Player who is again a once in a life time type player as well.

He's replaceable, but not really. You can't replace once in a generation superstars. We'll get another full forward, but he will be no Hawkins.

Ex Hawk/Freo Ben Allan’s son has run a 2.81 sec 20m and is 194cm. Also topped WA’s 2km time trial so has endurance. Averaged 25.4 possessions at Colts level. Interesting to see where he goes.

At least superficially that reads like a player we would be interested in if he drops. Probably West Coast .. but what the chance Freo come hunting for a son of a past captain?

Claremont/Western Australia
Midfielder
August ranking: -

A late riser who could feature around the top-20 on draft night. Allan missed the first half of the year with stress fractures in his back but returned for Western Australia's final game of the under-18 championships. He then went back to colts level with Claremont and played as an inside midfielder and wingman, averaging 25 disposals in his last five games. His athleticism and scope is exciting. He is the son of former Hawthorn and Fremantle player Ben Allan, but neither club has father-son rights on him.

When we have a Father Son who wins the Larke medal..get back to me. Once in a lifetime.

Pies people for some reason don't realise that they can take #25 off us and have time to work with it in regards to getting players they may still want.

If they don't need it for potential player deal... They can package it up with #16 or with #27 (assuming they get that one) or even both... and improve their draft hand.

It's not just about walking away for #25... It's about walking away from moving up the draft if they want.

You can now trade picks after the trade period... Flushing #25 down the toilet is not a chance of happening.
I agree.

But I'm hearing the rumour that Mackie treated them like dirt and Collingwood walked out. They were offered a lower pick and they said that wouldn't do, and Mackie basically said "tough luck" and Pies walked out. Then Wells was recalled to do some damage control evidently. They will be offered #25 and a bag of chips or something, but there's a good chance they won't take it. We apparently can only trade a future 1st rounder with special permission, and the AFL is being tough on that it seems after hearing they stopped the North-Port deal for Horne-Francis
