Because mr self-taught journalist got all starry-eyed at the thought of another Walkley he rushed the story, failed to properly investigate the claims and frame them in context and it’s all blown up.

The AFL has now taken control as a result of Rusty going off half-cocked and it looks extremely likely that they complainants will be very dissatisfied with the outcome.

Exaggerated accusations which so many on here believed without question.

Guilty without a chance to defend themselves.

I seriously believe it wasn’t properly fact-checked if at all.

And I made comments at the time that it looked like the ABC legal team were asleep at the wheel by allowing the original article to be published.

Of course The ABC are responsible too but most of the blame is on Rusty’s poor skills for this type of story.

Education is the key but finding the right education is what is the problem. Is it the Aunty Miriam Rose walking in two worlds or is it a cultural immersion of connection to country?

I used to work for Catholic education and Miriam Rose is like a rock star in there. I really like her approach, cleverly communicates to both first nations and non first nations communities. I get uneasy about the jesus links, but she has her own way of combining it with her traditional beliefs and creating something very new in Australian catholicism. She is hugely influential, practical and progressive.

Her style won't be for everyone though.

One of the great ladies I have ever met. Spend a lot of time with her and her hubby Ken on the Daly River. Her Granddaughters lived with us for a few years in Melbourne. Due to my situation from the past she is my Aboriginal Mum. (even though there is minimal age difference).

The real question about all this is where is that line.

Richmond told Dustin Martin who he could and couldn't socialise with.

North banned our players from social media the week after a bad flogging last year.

That's the real nub of the story - with a significant overlay for indigenous players in Hawthorn's example.

Where are the players association in all this too ffs.

I agree there is a lot of grey in this and don’t purport to know all the answers.

The pregnant partner of a player seems like a pretty safe place to draw a line though.

Some clubs quite openly recruit from private schools as seemingly a policy, and don't recruit indigenous players.

If the Bulldogs didn't have JUH land in their lap via an Academy system that doesn't exist any more, they may as well be the APS Bulldogs.

The Swans very rarely draft indigenous players and are all about the Charlie Horsewater types. One footy media type put it to me that the Swans "No Dickheads" policy is a nice way of saying "white private school kids only if we have to draft outside our Academy".

The Swans are tough to peg. I believe there is an element of truth in your criticism. When you hear Kinear Beetson speak about recruitment, it is clear it is not all one way direction. He says he looks at the background of players to see the ones that have had less advantages, as that means the gap between their current performance and ceiling is wider. To me it seemed pretty clear that he meant it.
