Who is ineligible right now for round 1?
Walsh
Cuningham
Cotterell

That’s probably it. The rest are available imo. Not much to worry about.

A few that have had interrupted preseasons but should be good to go.

Pittonet (not yet full training)
Marchbank (nyft)
Cerra (hamstring)
Hewett (full training)
Kennedy (ft)

Depth is there plus the addition of acres , Cowan and hollands to try to fit into last years team.

Walsh is the only one I’d put a line through at this stage

Can't wait to watch Hewett Round 1.

I wonder if putting on that 5kgs of muscle in one off-season was a contributor? The thought did cross my mind that this could happen with the extra load even before it was announced he was injured. It wasn't like he was that weak or slight in the first place relative to his position.
He put on 6kgs of lean muscle at the club’s request.

His KPI’s didn’t change from last preseason and was still required to run his 2km time trial in a sub 5min 50secs.

Not hard to join the dots……

It is terrible news re. Walshy but best it is fixed now and he is given all the time he needs to recover 100%.
if that is 2nd half of season then so be it.

This is a golden opportunity for Paddy Dow to step up IMO. So glad we held onto him.
Not sure it’s a golden opportunity. I’d hazard a guess that we’d bring in Doc/Carroll/Fish as the 5th mid or just play 4 primary mids before adding Dow.

Really struggle to see Cripps, Hewett, Kennedy and Dow in the same midfield. Like the end of last year when Hewett and Kennedy were injured and they option to throw Doc into the middle instead of promoting Dow.

Cottrell is an interesting one.
He picked up the injury learning how to kick straight - turns out the ball has never made contact with the correct part of his foot before, and that new sensation hurt.

Source: I made it up.
He’s actually a very good kick imo

Execution and decision making go hand in hand, he certainly has improved his kicking while the decision making is still a work in progress it’s also improving as well…

I think the gameplan was a huge contributor, for Cotts and many others as we looked to share the ball more.

What really impressed me about how Cotts game developed, especially in the 2nd half, was how often he outworked his opponent when running forward and kicking goals

Cotts was a big improver last season for me. He learnt how to use his great running power to better effect last year getting forward and back as and when the team needed him to.

If the rumour of his injury is true then it’s a real shame as IMO he could become a regular best 22 player in 2023 if he continues to improve this year the way he did last year.

Yeah, i happen to agree with everything of what you have said, both the new game plan and also his individual growth, of course there’s many different factors between team and player…
I tend to think that a players belief/confidence within themselves is a huge reason for feeling comfortable at the level that they belong, all vary but it’s usually then when you start to notice the improvement/step up….
There’s nothing better than witnessing a young players game evolve right before your eyes…

Another pleasing development of Cotts game last year I think has been the increased handballs, which has resulted in more effective disposals.

Average disposals per game increased from 8 kicks/3 handballs in 2021 to 9 kicks/6 handballs in 2022.

Straight from the champ’s mouth…

Walsh said the medical team at Carlton tried everything to avoid surgery but, in the end, it became a no-brainer.

“Probably at my age, we exhausted every other option and it was evident that surgery was needed and I was confident in that,” he said.

Walsh is unlikely to feature until at least April - a few rounds into the AFL season - but says he’s not putting any timeline on it yet.

“Just because I started my rehab today, we haven’t really spoken about long term targets,” he told 7NEWS.
“I’ve started to get moving which is exciting. From here (we can) map out a bit of a plan.
