"Stupid" being the operative word. Some of their long-term contract signings over the years have been, well, stupid! They were reportedly offering stupid money so you can't really blame Callaghan.
Where did you here this. How much is he being paid."Stupid" being the operative word. Some of their long-term contract signings over the years have been, well, stupid!
I heard they had to pay Callaghan extra to stay and put up with the grub as his captain/team-mate. Imagine having to put up with him every single day you go to work!
I wonder if Tom Doedee can lock down on smalls?
The problem is, if JUH and Darcy overtake Naughton, which is a real possibility and something that would not surprise me. Then we will need to fork out a fair bit on just three KPF alone, which will push our future cap tight. Especially given many teams lack decent key forwards. It is a position that would be in hot demand, teams would throw big money around to try entice one to come to their club. Even if we have some cap space, its not as simple as lets chase another gun player. Future planning is also taking in to consideration. Who is coming off contract? What their next contact may command etc.
If we had a bit of cap room, we could chase another decent player. Or we could restructure some big contracts and front load them. So we have a more balanced cap over the next few years and keep the list together. I admire Geelongs list management as they are able to stack their teams, and keep everyone happy, by sticking to a certain structure with their payments. Easily been the best managed team the past 15 years by a long shot.
Few "ITK" posters (usually with good info) have said that we are keen. It's interesting, Doedee looked like he was being positioned to be the next Adelaide captain and got leapfrogged by Dawson. Out of contract at the end of the year so you'd think that there's a reasonable chance he leaves as a free agent the end of year.

He is from Geelong so I imagine the under the carpet property and land portfolio story will continue there.
Pretty sure you misread my post as I never suggested anything about that, or said spending money on our forwards was an issue. I was just highlighting the fact JUH and Darcy, if they both break out. Will command a bit on their next contract, and Naughton is out of contract in 2024, will also expect a rise. Quality key forwards tend to cost a bit more, and we have a few of them.Who cares which area of the ground you spend your cap on?
Pretty sure Carlton aren’t worried that Curnow and McKay play the same position.
As I see it - Two key forwards and two ruck/ forwards (English and Darcy), all elite is perfect.
I think that one or Khamis, Cleary, Raak (all the even taller than Doedee) will develop into that medium role. Not sure what the pathway is for any of those guys if we bring in a player like Doedee.Yeah would love to bring in Doedee. Really nice intercept mark and solid skills from what I remember. Strong but not really KPD height, I think he would be more for the medium / 3rd talls, i'm not too sure how he goes on the Charlie Camerons of the world.

Doedee is a significant upgrade on all of those guys.I think that one or Khamis, Cleary, Raak (all the even taller than Doedee) will develop into that medium role. Not sure what the pathway is for any of those guys if we bring in a player like Doedee.
I agree. My point is more if you bring in a 27 year old Doedee then can you really have all of those other 3 on the list? Maybe if Buku is switched forward permanently and if Cleary proves he can play on smalls.Doedee is a significant upgrade on all of those guys.
I like Cleary but we have to be realistic.
Lions future first you mean. It's like those 3 picks will be 15-18 so wont get pick 1. I think dogs can trade for a small defender or winger. Likely find a elite mid at 2-7 so a trade for any of those picks will be enough. Now we have seen Jones in action, Lobb being solid in the ruck and as a forward…. Darcy doing Darcy things.
Do we think we need to recruit a KPP? Like seriously?!?!?
Just wait for the best kicking KPD I have seen develop in the 2’s for a year or two. No need to be chasing any KPP as far as I can see. We may also be getting in some KP father sons shortly too. Croft and Cooney look really promising too.
List needs really have to be:
Small defender
Winger
Elite inside mid*
With that in mind, I would consider trading our first, Freos first and our future first for pick 1. We need quality and another elite inside mid to earn his spot; would really be the list hole I would target. But would someone trade pick 1 for these 3 later first round picks?
Bergmann at Port as a winger, I still like but apparently unlikely to move. (Bugger!)

We need an interceptor down back, which explains the interest we have in Doedee. Crozier may get back to his aerial best but we can't bank on it.Now we have seen Jones in action, Lobb being solid in the ruck and as a forward…. Darcy doing Darcy things.
