We need an interceptor down back, which explains the interest we have in Doedee. Crozier may get back to his aerial best but we can't bank on it.
I'm not convinced TOB is that player and neither are the MC. Keath could be that player (for a year) if we had the KPP to release him in that role.

Busslinger is an intercept defender, who kicks the ball really well. He makes smart decisions and sets up play from behind the ball. He may develop into a KPD but that isn’t guaranteed.

It will be interesting to see IF we develop him more in a lockdown role or more in a rebound role. I think we will start him off as a lockdown to become able to play against gorillas and see how he develops.

I was massive on getting Jones, like most were, not so much on Scott or Baker. To get 3 best 23 players (1 potential AA) for literally nothing is such shrewd list management from Sammy P. Scott and Baker could play on opposite wings and combined be on half what Hunter was on and while neither have reached the output of Lachie at his best, those $$$ can be better used elsewhere.

This is the type of thinking people need to start understanding!

There is a salary cap in some positions you just need solid role players stop shitting on them for not being elite when they're paid to play a role and do it well

I’m much happier to put up with the odd stuff up/ miscommunication with Bruce if it means we don’t get continually out marked in the d50 which happened all of last year with Cordy, Schache or some other under sized defenders.
The defensive outlet kicks are something we can work on - unlike watching under sized defenders getting pushed around, falling over or constantly running under the ball Hopefully, Peter Wright won’t be kicking Seven against us again.

Hopefully we're not missing our full back and have our backup inexperienced KPD break his pelvis again.

Reckon he needs a good block of games in the VFL to get more of a feel for it. Then on standby to come in if needed, hard to see him playing if both Keath and Jones are there.

He's unlikely to play once Gardner is fit, but it'll be interesting to see how the team is selected and plays until then.

I'd probably lean towards Jones/Keath back, Naughton/JUH forward, then have Darcy/English/Lobb all playing and rotating through forward/ruck/back as required. This would likely mean English ruck, Lobb forward and Darcy back most of the time, but you could drop English back to KPD or rest him forward and have Lobb ruck while Darcy slotted in wherever the vacant role is as/when required. Or when you're resting one of them let Bont roll forward.

Interesting time to be a dogs fan with all these KPPs to fit in. Looking forward to round 1.

Keath's movement this year is a pleasant surprise - not only as he forced his way back into the 22, he may perform well enough to earn himself a 12 month contract extension. Gives us the luxury of heading to the draft* for a KPD instead of desperately needing another 'stop-gap' while Buss develops.

* Moot point if Jordan Croft shows any inclination towards playing as a KPD

I suspect the 4-tall structure is going to stay, given we threw Khamis forward for most of the pre-season too

With the tall forwards all looking good and the defenders looking thinner, I'd like to see Khamis swung back.

Looks cherry ripe for AFL opportunity and showed good signs as a 3rd tall/interceptor last year.

Just want to see the kid get a crack. Has a lot to offer.
He is the best player with the best potential currently not in the side. He must be very close. For me he should get the 3rd defender spot ahead of Bruce.

Depends on the opposition.

I would say that against Melbourne round 1, Bruce is more suited against the resting Ruckman/Ben brown.

For instance:

Keath - Brown
Bruce - Gawn/Grundy

This then allows Jones to intercept. Or could swap and have Jones match up on Brown, then have Keath to come through as spare to intercept.

Tom McDonald will probably play, he has a knack for killing us too.

There ya go.

So we need all our talks in this match.

Or you say that having someone like Khamis who is quicker than Bruce, more likely to intercept and may match McDonald in the air with his leap then potential run off on him an create the break in the chain for the onballers down field. On the larger MCG ground I would be taking Khamis. I admit, I'm a massive fan of his.

I don't think we'll play Jones as a pure interceptor. He'll play on a Ben Brown.

He is an outstanding one on one contested mark/spoiler should a contest be required (in 2021 he was outmarked once in 101 contests, the best numbers on record).

The opposition will naturally kick the ball in a Brown's general direction when entering F50, giving Jones more opportunity to back himself in to read the incoming ball better, peel off and intercept.

Yeah I think people have the wrong idea of Jones if they think he’s going to play loose, he will take the best forward every single week. He’s a rare unit in that a lot of his intercept marks are contested, it’s not about coming 3rd man up to intercept for him he’s more likely to just outwrestle his opponent and straight up outmark them.

He really is unique in the way he plays and I think he’s very well suited to our defensive system

Are we talking about 195cm, 101kg Tom McDonald and thinking 191cm, 87kg Khamis is a better match up than Josh Bruce (199cm, 102kg)?

Can't say I agree. McDonald would monster him

McDonald is a mobile, hard leading type who creates space rather than being a gorilla type. Reckon he'd hurt Bruce on the burst more than he'd hurt Khamis shoulder to shoulder.
