2, 3 and 6 are all things that can be addressed in game.

Was Martin ever used as a mid tonight?

I don't think we can really say that Voss has coached them to do these things. Players react to the pressure.

I can see where using one side of the ground may have been a tactic. I have no doubt we didn't want to expose Hollands on his wing too often. It's just so happened that Acres struggled when we all thought he'd be the one to play through.

Has Martin ever been used as a mid ... really? Who would you take out for him? Can't really move a struggling player into a vital spot in the hope he finds the ball. I would have subbed him out.

The umps were pretty poor I thought.

If the defender hugs his opponent (both arms around) it's an automatic free kick. Because they wouldn't pay this to Charlie the less athletic Grimes could just hold him out of the contest all night. It did have a big impact.
I think they were consistent and that's all i ask for. It was very similar at both ends. If they paid a free to Charlie from the first call, then what's to say that every time Lynch got near it they have to pay the same "soft" free. Let it go, be consistent in the call.

Disagree with anyone saying that LOB did the wrong thing there. He receives a handball from Motlop on the half-back flank. Rioli is quickly on his tail, so he doesn't have time to stop and look for a short sideways or backwards target. There's no one immediately up the ground for him to kick to. His only choice is to run forward.

He runs, and looks for a target. Again, He doesn't want to go corridor because that's an even greater risk of turnover, so he tries to find someone near the boundary. Sees McKay one-on-three, close to the boundary. Chances are pretty good that McKay either marks it or can knock it over the line. Kicks it perfectly, lace-out to McKay.

It's difficult to see what he could have done differently.

If he had tried anything else (kicking it backwards into the tiges' fifty, trying to find someone in corridor and turning it over), we would all be asking why on earth he hadn't run down the line and kicked to McKay to try to at least get a boundary throw in stoppage.
Don't agree with this. Mckay was 20 metres clear and LOB could have easily kicked it to him after the second bounce imo. TV coverage didnt show it properly at all.

If we play like that against Geelong next week it will be a massacre. Ditch the small forwards Fish, Martin, Owies, and bring in Durdin, Honey and Cunners. Small forwards need to support the talls and so many times there were only 3 Tigers at the fall of the ball with all Carlton smalls MIA. Ball quickly rebounded back into Tigers F50 every time.
It was the same last season never any crumbing smalls at the feet of the talls. Kept on getting caught up the ground.

Seriously!! Was doing my head in… That “chopping of the arms” call on Saad vs Bolton, how?! And then you have Curnow with literally two arms around him and nothing is called. Not sure what it looked like on TV, but it felt like they received so many 50-50 calls where we got none.

Still struggling to see what everyone sees in Jack Martin, just an ordinary footballer.

Agree.

Shouldn’t be playing,I do remember when he played at the suns I think he may have played half back.If he does play that might work but he’s running out of chances.

You would’ve thought after the ending of last year, the team would’ve come out with a point to prove.
I just don’t see it. Still get bullied around the ball and around the ground by the tigers. Still far too nice.
Still the same kick it and hope game plan.
Still too many simple mistakes.

Sure it was rd 1, but win, lose or draw, that game was dead set shithouse.

I think we played very hard tough footy. Don’t think we took any backward steps.

wow. Lucky to get 2 points tonight. But then again, so were Richmond. I felt they could have won by 6 goals, but then we should have won by 6 points. Draws are always bizarre.

I thought George and Kennedy were good. Crippa and Cerra not much chop tonight. I'm seriously doubtful that Cerra is anything above a B-Grader. A B-Grader is good, but Cerra was twice rated a Top 7 Pick, and he's playing just OK.

TDK did well to overall break about even with Nank i thought. TDK may even have taken the points.

Young was terrific. Newman, Saad, Doc, Weitering and Gov were generally good.

Harry was good up the ground, no good deep though. Charlie beaten but kicked 3.

Motlop was good. Fisher woeful after Q time. Silvagni very poor. He's not a 2nd ruck. Martin no good. Owies always way below AFL standard.

Cowan was terrific. Ollie ran and ran.

I am no fan of O'Brien but from a tv watching perspective he did everything right in that last play. Took all the ground, after we were diabolically choking it up in the back 50, and hit Harry on the tit. Harry just fell over. Unbelievable. Some at the ground are saying he had Harry out earlier. Fair enough. But he still took all that ground and hit Harry on the tit 20 metres out.

The choking moments were many in the last quarter, and from older players. Gov, McKay, Owies, Saad, Acres. Not good enough. Terrible.

Speaking of choking, i'd like to choke whoever lifts up the friggin "go slow" sign. IT NEVER WORKS. It gives the opposing team a Green Light to attack without fear.

How we got 2 points after they had so many F50's is remarkable. But i'll take it and chalk it up as 2 points against a good side, without Walsh and debuting 2 18yo first gamers.

He could have, but then H has the ball with nobody to kick to outside scoring distance and Richmond streaming back.
Instead, LOB takes more time and hits what should be an uncontested mark 30-35 meters out. H doesn't fall over and he's taking 30 seconds off the clock to have a shot only needing a point to seal the win.

.
Simon Meredith.

Richmond premiership hero.

Charlie was molested all game, 3 times blatantly in the goal square.
1 of those he was able to kick the goal off the ground.
Another one in the second quarter the ball went straight down the other end and Rioli got a soft free. 12 point play by the umps.

Also so many blatant hands in our backs and push outs that got ignored.

H is taking 30 seconds off the clock regardless after Docherty's goal with that breeze earlier on in the quarter.

we still have walsh to add in a few weeks guys :thumbsu:
Need him desperately.

0 overlap run through that midfield. We were so predictable.

Was a horrible brand of footy to watch.

People underestimated Richmond hence all the vitriol about a draw...

I got the distinct feeling that the players are carrying pre-season tiredness - too many looked flat footed like they were running carrying weights on their backs - Martin/McGovern/Saad all off their better performances.

The contested ball battle was hot tonight and I give the points to Richmond for having a smarter exit strategy at pretty much every stoppage situation. Seemed to me that Carlton players were fumbly around the contest.

I thought Fisher was BOG in Q1 for Carlton and was ready to change my mind about him if he could play out the game in Q1 fashion - he disappeared for the next three quarters - very strange.

People blaming LoB for his kick I don't understand he actually outran Rioli who is no slug and hit a pinpoint 40 meter pass to Harry - who slipped still had a chance to mark it- and didn't - now have a look at the players NOT involved in that contest - every Carlton player in the team was behind the ball ( team orders) until LoB got it in his hands out running Rioli hot on his tail bouncing the ball in slippery conditions ...leave off please I'm no fan of LoB but he did ok when he came on.

I'm not surprised that Owies made numerous skill errors in the final quarter especially - when the game was on the line - he tries hard but he isnt someone who is going to do much at this best.

TDK halved the ruck battle tonight - playing Jack as a ruck - sorry doesn't work and makes him too tired to play as a third tall - he was another that kind. disappeared after Q1- but he has excuses.

Richmond looked sharper attacking and why wouldn't they - they have one of the best forward lines in the game- stacked- I was pleased to see the umps ignore their obvious ducking antics.

So for all the negatives- we get a draw - which means for all the so called superiority of Richmond on teh day ( despite what the actual kicking at goal stats say) they get a draw too.

I still think our achilles heel is in the forward flanks - waiting for Cuningham to get back + Durdin + Honey has to be considered.

2 points is far far better than none.
