Stupid to build a whole lot of new facilities for "legacy benefits" spread out over the whole state for such an event.

I dont know where the $4bil blowout has happened but it should be in a city less spread out than over a whole state, and use plenty of existing infrastructure.

Maybe back to back Games in Birmingham.

I know Canada is interested in the 2030 Games as it will be the Centenary Games which the 1930 Games in Hamilton, Ontario.

Hamilton - Toronto is very similar to Geelong-Melbourne, about 80km apart and the smaller city is about 1/10th the size of the bigger city.

Toronto had a very ambitious bid/plan for 2012 Olympic Games and was going to use it to help redevelop docks and wharf areas near downtown Toronto. But they pulled out when they won 2010 Vancouver winter games. Dont know how interested they are in using Comm Games as part of a longer term bid for Olympic Games and how much of that land set aside for redevelopment near downtown has been sold by local and provoncial governments in the last 20 years.

wonder how much the cancellation fee is?
A piss in the ocean compared to going ahead with it. I’d say we never should have accepted the games but then we wouldn’t have over a thousand new social housing residences in the pipeline as a result.

They won’t find another host. It’s over.

GC 2018 cost $1.5bil, Birmingham I can't find a final cost but it appeared to be on budget on the eve of the games last year and it was £780m, 25% funded by City of Birmingham and 75% by UK government.

90% of the 2006 Melb Comm Games infrastructure is still there. Should never have been a state wide bid and to build new "legacy facilities" around the state.

The $7bil price tag and can't be changed to Melbourne, without it costing substantially more than the $2.6bil budget, yet will still spend $2bil on the legacy facilities, sounds like BS to me.

Good to see that the swimming heats & finals will be screened on 9 & Gem instead of just streaming on 9now.

A big weekend for fans of Olympic sports. Besides the swimming there are athletics Diamond League meets in Monaco & London with a bunch of Aussies (including relay teams) competing,

This is SwimSwam's predictions / preview index page with links to each individual event they have written a preview for so far is below.

At the moment they have previewed 23 of the 42 events. So far they have predicted 5 wins to both Oz and USA and and 21 medals for USA vs 13 for Oz, and 4 nations to win two events.

The 5 events for Oz they are predicting so far, Kaylee McKeown 200 Back, Womens 4x100m Free, 400m Free Elijah Winnington, 200m Breaststroke Zac Stubblety-Cook and Mixed 4 x 100m Free relay.

Most of the events the Oz women expected to win haven't been previewed yet.

They have tipped Cameron McEvoy 50m Free, Kyle Chalmers 100m Free, Ariane Titmus 800m Free and Kaylee McKeown 200m IM to win silver.

Makes sense given they have the next 3 summer Olympics TV rights, its in our time zone, plus its Oz's most successful Olympic sport, so this is good practice as well as build up the personalities for their Paris coverage. Will be interesting if post Paris, they look at acquiring the athletics world championship rights to build up their Olympic sports portfolio.

Actually Summer McIntosh wont be swimming the 200IM.
This will elevate McKeown to Gold based on the Swimswam predictions.
They also added in Titmus for 200m title
Therefore thats 7 Gold to Australia to USA 5

They have still remaining to review
100m Free Womens
100m Back Womens
4 x 200m Free Womens
We should be favoured for the above

Also Womens 400m free
Dont write off Ariane!

Swimswams Cam McEvoy pick not to win the 50 free is based on his 2016 performance in Rio 7 years ago.
This is now 2023 and Cam is the fastest by a long way.
His preparation and overall physical presense is completely different from 2016.
Cam will win this.
I really hope he also joins the 4 x 100m relay heats.
While not likely to replicate his 47.0 Australian record, sub 48 is possible and would elevate the relay team incl King Kyle to a huge chance for the win.

Ohps forgot to put the SwimSwam predictions preview page link. They are now upro 27 events and added Titmus to Oz winning 6 events from my last post when I said they had Oz at 5 of the 23 events.
