My decision tree or whatever for our draft picks would be...

Offer WC pick 2 & Port's pick for pick 1

If they say yes = draft Reid at 1 and McKercher at 3

If they say no = draft McKercher at 2 and Curtin at 3

Unless, someone offers a trade for pick 2 that gets us two picks. One that can land us Watson and another that can land us one of Schoenmaker, O'Sullivan or Edwards.

So, my preferred outcomes from round 1 of the draft are;
1 - Reid, McKercher, Sanders
2 - McKercher, Sanders, Watson, KPP
3 - McKercher, Curtin, Sanders

I don't know how the trade back option can work with matching Sanders, maybe something like...

  • we trade Port's pick to, say, Brisbane for their F1 and pick 45
  • we trade 2 for 5 and Melb F1
  • someone bids on Sanders and we match with 39, 45, 53, 59
  • we then trade Lions F1, Melb F1 to WB for their picks 10 and 17 (probably 14 and 21 by now) that they'll lose in a Croft bid

We leave with 3 (McKercher), 5 (Watson), 9 (Sanders), 14 (Edwards), 21 (Schoenmaker or Murphy).
Port pick (14-16) & 39 for Adelaide’s 20 & 23.

Port pick (14-16) & 39 for Adelaide’s 20 & 23.

We can’t trade them for 20 as it was our original pick but in this case there’s no benefit anyway, likely just to be points for Sanders.

All parts of Harley's game were on song here, bursting through packs, winning the hard ball, taking contested marks and driving his team forward. He copped a lot of attention from the Falcons boys with some big hits, but he always bounced back up and kept going like the future Champ he seems destined to be.

I keep asking whether Reid is worth it but this is the first video I've seen of him that really impressed me. Its the first time I've thought he hasn't looked a little slow.

Lance collard from Subiaco colts goes very nicely as a small fwd, always kicking bags of multiple goals...lightning quick..I'm sure if he was from Vic. He'd be talked about a lot more.
Collard kicked 5.1 from 8 kicks yesterday against East Freo in the WAFL Colts semi-final.

I'm higher on Duursma than most, but his brother almost makes me want to put a line through his name.

I think at this point, the Curtin and McKercher duo makes too much sense for us. I'd love Watson too, but if we are that desperate for him then there are some creative ways that we can pick him up.

The more I see of Curtin, the more I think that he is a Tomlinson-esque utility and not a traditional intercepting or lockdown KPD. People are talking about him as a need with the loss of McKay, but if his tank develops then I wouldn't be shocked to see him on a wing in a few years.

Sanders absolutely shredded the Knights in the first quarter. Seriously good prospect. His clearance work, defensive intensity and overhead marking stood out to me.

I'm beginning to think that he isn't getting talked up as a top 4-5 chance because most know that he will be getting to us 1 way or another (whether we have to bid on him or not). Although, I do get the "lower ceiling" argument that others have mentioned as well.

I can feel the blood pressure of opposition clubs rising with every possession.

Interestingly, he was ranked between 10-15 before there was wind of our application for him…….he’s played outstanding footy of late, but I feel he’s been bumped up higher to help cue the outrage.
Will be interesting what happens from here.

Yeah he doesn’t seem to have a POD in his athleticism (this is without any access to testing numbers) - but his skillset is pretty polished. I think he’d be top 5 if the teams in the top 5 needed a Sanders type, but they don’t so they’ll opt for the more specialist type players in Watson/Duursma/Curtin, etc.

In fairness to him he also did win the Larke Medal since then too, in the 17 medalists since 2005 (2004 was JWS), 10 of those went top 2 in the draft.

No, people aren't talking about Curtin as a McKay replacement. People are talking about finally picking up a young KPP and Curtin happens to be the best of the bunch. McKay leaving is not related, aside from his compensation making it easier to acquire a KPP early.

Hope we get him then.

Seems like a V8 that just keeps running, I reckon he'd certainly take some load off Wardlaw and LDU which would help us manage their game time and longevity.

I get Lenny Hayes vibes from Sanders: a skilled bull that can lead from the front, ultra consistent but perhaps not quite as athletically gifted as some of his contemporaries.
