The points value system is okay. I just think it's flawed when discounts are involved.

Give clubs access to their academy players across the board in any round, no problem, but make them pay extra point value at say +30% in round one, +20% round two etc etc.

Clubs shouldn't have both 'access' and 'discount' associated with players.

No points deficit pushing into the following season - period.

GC will get Walter, Rogers & Edwards arguably at 2, 9 & 14 or a points value of 5417 add the discount and they essentially get pick 16-17 credited points value. That's rubbish.

Adding a cost of early access means they need to fork out pick 7-8 in points value & trade accordingly.

As an example, we have pick 2,3 and Sanders is a solid prospect as our academy investment. If say Essendon bid on him at 9 we would have the ability to match the bid +30% or picks 17 and 18 in this years draft but gain another 'top 10' player, albeit at a cost.

I'd be more than happy with a Curtin, McKercher, Sanders + whoever.

Why are people suggesting we still have Sanders? I thought we have been told by the AFL that won't be getting any sort of preferential access to him? The only way we get access to him is if he slips outside the top 40 which is not going to happen.

We don't. Might as well say we've got picks 1,2,3 too.

It was a hypothetical discussion based on a different academy bidding structure & how it would change the outcome in this draft as an example.

I think we are all aware Sanders is essentially a 'normal' draft candidate.

Looks like Ethan Phillips is heading to the Hawks instead.

AFL Hawks hope for departing Borough backman

Paul Amy

Port Melbourne’s Ethan Phillips is switching VFL clubs, in an attempt to win an AFL spot and keep alive a remarkable streak for Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal winners, writes PAUL AMY.

The VFL’s 2022 Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal winner, Ethan Phillips, is switching clubs in an attempt to win an AFL listing.
Phillips, 24, has signed with Box Hill Hawks and will train with Hawthorn during the pre-season.

The 197cm defender finished fifth in Port’s best and fairest this year, averaging 17.6 disposals and 8.6 marks from 18 matches.
He was runner-up in the Port vote count last year, when he took 147 marks at an average of 9.8 a game and became the Borough’s fourth Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medallist.

Every medal recipient from 2006 to 2021 graduated to AFL ranks but clubs overlooked Phillips at the 2022 drafts.
He said today it was “really disappointing’’ but he hadn’t given up hope of extending the medal run.

“I’m not going to let that rest,’’ Phillips said.

“I’m going to make sure the streak doesn’t stop with me. I want to keep it going. I’ll give it my all in the next couple of years. I’m coming to some peak years. I’ve really matured. I’m really looking forward to what my footy has to hold.’’

Phillips signed with Hawthorn-aligned Box Hill last Friday and informed Port Melbourne officials on Monday.

He said it was difficult to leave Port, which he joined in 2019 after coming out of the Oakleigh Chargers.

Phillips said the Borough were a “bloody good club with some rich history, but I had to make a selfish decision in the end, to do what’s best for me’’.

“Pretty excited to get stuck into the Box Hill program,’’ he said.

“I think it’s a good move. I think it’s going to take me to another level as a player.

“There’s a little opportunity to have the exposure to the AFL over the pre-season and that’s good to have that there. But I’m more excited with the Box Hill component. They’ve got a really good program there.’’

Phillips assessed his 2023 season as superior to his recognition-filled 2022.

“Statistically it wasn’t as good as last year but when I spoke to ‘Skrob’ (Port Melbourne coach Adam Skrobalak), we thought I’d become a better player.

“I played a different role. I was playing on the No.1 forward every week, whereas last year we were more trying to free me up for intercepting.

“But my intercepts were only slightly down compared to last year. I definitely thought I was a better player this year.’’
Phillips may not be the only key Borough leaving the club.
Oh **** off. They're going to get another good cheap player aren't they?
Bloody North, always letting these opportunities go..

I wonder where he starts.

HB and move Sheezel forward? Play them both off Hb?

Maybe forward?

I would! Reid has played HBF quite capably throughout his juniors so it's not unknown poistion for him which would for say a McKercher....release Sheez to play his natural HFF with time in the middle or switch both players for different style of impact like release the Bull in the middle and have Reid play HF, Sheez rebounding.

I know this is radical, but maybe we should draft a key tall with a round 1 pick instead of selling the farm for Harley Reid?

Who do you have in mind? Collard? Key forward stocks aren't really that abundant in the top 30

Edit: Unless you think we're short with Corr, Pink and Dawson

That probably depends on whether he is better than Toby Pink and Biggie, but there is a limit to how many cheap KPD we should pick up in a off season
He's the type we should have been looking at the last 2-3 rookie & mid-season drafts. We have had every chance to select him so obviously Brady and co. don't think much of him.

From what I’ve been told he doesn’t pass the good bloke test

Not that it should determine going for a player imo

Twoomey has Collard, Murphy, Roberts, Jiath, Green, Edwards, A.Reid & Gothard between 17 to 30. All of them could fill a hole. I'm no draft expert but there must be some good options past pick 10? If its not a key forward then surely we can fill another hole with late 1st round picks.

Should we look at Eathan Phillips seeing as he is leaving Port Melbourne for the Box Hill Hawks in the hope of being selected in the draft..
No doubt 1 of our later picks should get it done just not sure which one and then Hawks wouldn't get him..l'm not sure if he lives near
Port Melbourne but imagine packing up and moving to the Eastern suburbs then having to do it again if we selected him..:laughv1:

Can't they just take him as a play on player or DFA as he was previously listed at an AFL club?

Worse than pink, better than Biggie imo.
At least he'd be some decent cover in a position we have none for.

No cover? Logue is only gone for half the yr and in his absence we have corr, biggie, pink, Dawson and comben assuming he is back... that's five to turn to six....

And would like to add a kpd like osull if we can get up to 7 or 8 as be gone before 10

There is a lot of talk about trading 15,17,18 for a pick in the Top 10 but from what I have read, this is unlikely. If we want pick 1, we have to move on 3 but if not, keep 2 and 3. Happy either way.

3 wont be a starting point it has to be 2 unless WC dont want either Reid or Mckersher
