My reason for that is that people keep saying it's basically the same thing, but they are very different in both intent and how they are received.
For example, if you were to call someone a p**sy it would have a very different effect than if you were to call them a c**t. While they mean the same thing, their place in society is very different.
I definitely agree that if you pull the word apart and look at what you're actually saying it absolutely is something that's homophobic. I find it hard to explain the difference between the two so I asked my brother in law (who is gay), he basically said one word you need to think about to reach the conclusion that it could be homophobic, whereas the other there isn't any doubt.I went i to some detail on another thread to explain to someone why ‘C#$& S@#$+&*/ is homophobic.
I’d never considered it being so myself till I examined it.
I guess if you call someone a ‘bunny rooter’, the Rabbits of this world would feel marginalised (if they could) - so it is logical.
Before I answer I fully believe that Finlayson fully deserves a ban of games, saying that is not on.AFL statement is a bit of a wank innit.
"To be clear, without the full and frank admissions, apologies and contrition that Finlayson showed, the sanction would have included a longer suspension."
Of course he showed contrition the dumb campaigner got caught on microphone being a homophobe lmao.
I think with one, you can argue a case that it is pejorative in a non-homophobic sense, more along the lines of "arse kisser" that can be applied to anybody regardless of gender or sexuality. Of course it can also be homophobic, and my wager on Clarko's use of it is in that category.I definitely agree that if you pull the word apart and look at what you're actually saying it absolutely is something that's homophobic. I don't know for sure but I imagine it would just provide a more in-depth understanding of the past hurt, the ongoing damage this sort of thing can have, and the power that high profile sportspeople have and why their attitudes matter even more.I haven't read through the whole thread, might have already been asked and answered but what would Finlayson's "education course" involve?
He has already apologised and hence knows he was out of line so what is the point of education, is it just perception.
Hmm…even if you look at it in a pejorative sense - it’s use as a slur implies it’s a bad thing - ergo, homosexual activity is a bad thing.I think with one, you can argue a case that it is pejorative in a non-homophobic sense, more along the lines of "arse kisser" that can be applied to anybody regardless of gender or sexuality. The other is unequivocally a homophobic slur and a very bad one at that.
Nobody said that.
This reminds me of AlgebraIn Australia the P word is more offensive to a guy than the C word.
A C can be a good bloke. A P never is.
No that's not it - it's more about the act being a cynical way of ingratiating yourself with powerful people in order to advance oneself. That's what I meant there.Hmm…even if you look at it in a pejorative sense - it’s use as a slur implies it’s a bad thing - ergo, homosexual activity is a bad thing.
As I said, I really chewed this one over (no pun intended!) and ultimately its a knock on anyone who engages in male oral sex - Women included.
I’m with you - yes, there is that implication I agree. No that's not it - it's more about the act being a cynical way of ingratiating yourself with powerful people in order to advance oneself. That's what I meant there.

shudder
AFL statement mentions his actions following the game- apologising afterwards, making a statement etc. Before I answer I fully believe that Finlayson fully deserves a ban of games, saying that is not on.
However Finlayson would not have known it was picked up on the mike. Unless the umpire told him?
Well, being from Boston..you probably burned your Math teacher, yes?Maths is evil.

yep protected species got off lightly.Finlaysons punishment is fine (could have been more). It's the fact Clarko got off the way he did when he has form. That's the joke
