There's a very simple solution to have Stengle stay at Geelong. . .
Geelong buys the Betts family a home in Geelong, school fees, holidays etc
Bring him back to the club with a role. Always thought Betts brought an uplifting + inspiring energy to the Club. Would be worth a premiership next year.

I've just read Essendon and Stkilda. Mrs Betts don't ruin Stengles career by sending him to StKilda and the prick Lyon, everyone loses.
Going to St Kilda is a diabolical move for Stengle, even if they offer a squillion dollars! In addition to Lyon's strangulation tactics, do they have any hope of winning a flag in the next fews years, from 14th atm? While money is a dangling carrot, team success is just as important.

You'd think it would be Essendon or possibly Carlton but not sure how they afford it, although he'd probably take the same money for the Melbourne/Betts factor..

Unpopular theory but Stengle is actually doing us a favour by liking the highest bidder.

If we cant make his $$ levels for whatever reason, by then saying ill go to ths highest bidder he's getting the GFC the best compo outcome possible - and if its gets Band 1 which i tmight given the numbers on offer in this thread, a pick after ours in Rd 1 aint the worst outcome for us given what he's given us overall.
3 years, AA, Flag component for 53 goals and leaves on good terms with a Band 1 on the way out.

Id rather he stay but as a return, its not bad for a DFA signing 3 years ago.

Buy low and sell high and this seems like that really.

now. the key is to not lose the FA comp pick by taking a FA this year....

But can we trade the Compo pick to NM for LDU?

But can we trade the Compo pick to NM for LDU?

There's no way North trade a contracted LDU for a mid range first. And his injury history doesn't make me want to stump up 2x firsts.

I'd be looking at young guys who have shown talent, are out of contract and might want to move.

Bailey Smith for the right price contract wise as a swap for our first or the Stengle compo. The contract makes me nervous though.

Then Nik Cox and Seth Campbell are 2 I'd offer solid contracts to under the assumption we can get them without giving up a first if they nominate us.

Looking like Stengle is out the door. Probably anyway. At the end of the day, we have turned a DFA into a premiership player and an end of first round pick worst case. Got him for nothing, and even if it is band 2 compo and a pick in the 20's, that is still a win given he cost us nothing in trade capital with his DFA status. The downside is his DFA status will mean we don't get great value if / when he leaves. But we can't complain given the steal he has been.

Also, I have to say, I do miss Turbocat contributions - not sure where he is, but a draft and trading thread is not the same without their contributions!

Turbocat

Great point. He is missed.

Great bloke.

Not necessarily a pick in the 8 - 12 range and another latter pick in a good draft pool may seem alot better to North than a gamble the following year if he is 100% out the door. Who knows what the AFL will change re FA and RFA in 25.

It appears he signed a 1 year extension in Feb 2023 (so before the season started).

He never played while being OOC.

He actually had his worst year with us directly after signing what I'd assume would have been his biggest yearly contract.

I do think him being smashed/concussed by Howe in R1 and breaking his wrist mid-year impacted his year more than him having 2023 & 2024 locked away with us.

To my untrained eye... I do notice players getting more out of themselves in OOC years (unless being injured or cooked).

TS is OOC this year and flying... Does his form have anything to do with being OOC?... Personally I doubt it, but we will get some more data next year to compare.

I hope he stays.

Losing very good players in his age bracket is not ideal.
I have seen proper analysis on the impact of contract status on players performance in the major US sports.

The overwhelming conclusion was that contract status did not have any impact on performance.

I can’t imagine why this would be any different in the AFL.

If we didn't play fools gold footy early in the year and we were looking at bottom 4/6 zone... I'd be ok with Stengle going for band 1 comp.

Band 2 would be a shocking result for us.

I'd love Smith to get to us and find his best form once again.
Band 1 would also be a disaster.

For context, would you trade Stengle straight up for Riley Sanders? Or nick Watson? Or COS? I wouldn’t.

As a general rule these types of interviews are not instructive at all, but that did not exactly fill me with confidence.

On the contrary Hawk painted it as a purely financial decision for Tyson, in which case we are well and truly in the hunt. I would be far more concerned if Hawk was talking about Tyson’s support network being in Melbourne and the travelling he does during the week (I know he normally stays with the Betts family the night before a game in Melbourne).

It's good context. Round 1 picks (or top 10) are no guarantee to be successful. I just had a quick look over the past 6 years top 10 picks and I'd say close to 50% you wouldn't even debate trading Stengle for.

I'd rather the proven player than the speculative pick. But if we could move the pick on for Smith, LDU or similar, then I'd probably agree with you. But that's based on following:

1. we definitely get round 1 comp
2. we finish in the bottom 8

Because I feel like that's what would be required to turn that pick into another proven A grader.

But previous players to get round 1 compo have generally got paid a bit more (Tom Lynch, Ben McKay). The closest would maybe be Zac Williams which was reported at about $900k/year, but that was 4 years ago. So you'd probably need it to be closer to $1mil now. I think end of round 1 compo is more likely, and that by itself is probably not likely to get a trade like that done.

You would be trading the certainty of having a gun player, in their prime, with no development time required for the hope of drafting a gun player who may stay at the club longer.

Give me the certainty of the sure thing every time thanks.

I'd agree, would definitely rather Stengle than take pick 13 (which is currently what it would be, not considering FS/academy bids).

But if you can on trade the pick for another player (smith), I think you could make an argument for it.

That is a fair call.

I think the lesson for me is that I should have stuck with my usual position that these type of interviews always mean nothing.

I would only trade the stengle comp for a player like smith if we had no choice (ie. Stengle had already walked). Trying to make the best of a bad situation.

If the question was - who would you rather have, Stengle or smith? I would take Stengle every day of the week.

If Stengle goes and we end up with Smith and our 1st pick, I'd feel...okay, certainly not overjoyed.
If the dogs said you can have Smith but give us Stengle, I wouldn't do it (unless Stengle was adamant he wanted out). I know this is all hypothetical given Stengles free agency but just references where I rate him.

I think you can make an argument for both, particularly given our midfield is quite weak at the moment.

Stengle has been our best forward this year. But other than Holmes, who has played most of the year as a defender anyway, a fit Smith would probably also be our best mid atm.

agree with the rest but north will get a top 3 compo pick for ldu next year. Thats when we can get him. Nothing we can offer will make them trade him this year.
But if we could trade the stengle pick for b smith and then get ldu FA in 2025 that would be great.

Id take stengle over p15 but smith is better than p15 so id chase him.
