Based on this footage, he wouldn't be a 4th rounder... It's funny how most of us have seen this from Laird for years, and it's only now being looked at by the media since he roasted Rash. Personally, I love seeing this stuff and can't wait for us to "back the boys in" and drink our own bath water again.
“Matty Nicks needs to nip this in the bud this off-season, or it’s going to cost him his job”.

We’re going to the Gold Coast hinterland this pre-season.

Yeah let's play Strachan who has even struggled the last 2 weeks in the SANFL.

ROB is it unless we trade in a viable AFL ruckman for 2025 forwards.
We saw a couple of games (particularly after he'd been dropped, also maybe coincided with when Izak came back from suspension or injury?) where he was tapping to OUR players and they were reading him far better than previously. The ability is there IF we have a midfield that plays to him. He's the #1 in taps, so it makes sense we play to his strength. The only issue I have with him is his interference role when the ball is going forward. He should be made to stay away from the forwards - and let them do the leading and not have him jump in front of them and **** up the contest.

I think there's zero chance Nicks goes.

I think they make more substantial changes with the assistants though.

If we can only get rid of Nicks or the assistants, not both, then **** Nicks off.

Nicks is never going to make it.

A strong, competent coach can deal with our current assistants for a year. Decide who he wants to keep and who he wants to bring in over the next 12 months.

I'm 100% agreeing with you.

But it is clear the club isn't agreeing with its.

It's going to be the assistants, I'm just curious as to who they are going to be.

I just really hate this idea that Nicks is the man, he needs to be supported etc.

Rip the bandaid off.

I agree, love to be proven wrong , but I don't see it either.

Mind you, no idea who the next in line for coaching opportunities are.

I recall when Burns was considered a good candidate, but who here would to have him as a head coach now.

Douglas at the Suns
Sam Jacobs at WWT
Mackay at Hawthorn
Otten at Collingwood
Hart to come back for another stint?
Rutten?

2024 has clearly shown Nicks is not the man for the job - he rebuilt a fractured group through his positive feel good lovefest and that’s great but now he has demonstrated through ridiculous selection choices absurd match day decisions [Borlase forward on Saturday night] the non subable Murphy etc. etc. he is not going to improve the AFC.

Time to admit mistakes were made and find someone who is an AFL coach not a student counsellor.

That's fine, but Nicks is signed.

Their opinion is he improved year on year until this year, when we took a step back.

I'm sure they're also saying that improvement isn't linear, and this should have been expected.

Next year he gets sacked, unless we make the eight.

In the meantime, we HAVE to improve the other coaching staff.

Didn't someone once say the Titanic was unsinkable?

see this is one of those posts where if it wasn't so realistic you could laugh at it.

My expectation will be Rutten and or Otten

Its not so silly to think the skills required to rebuild a fractured group as Nicks has (supposedly) done, are not the same skills required to build an elite premiership contending AFL club.

I'm still not seeing any proof he ever rebuilt anything.

He could have stayed in bed for 5 years and texted in his "teachings" and the result would have been the same.

To be genuinely honest my one wish for the club is to genuinely attack this draft and finally do a rebuild. Like sell the farm, berry and keane probs net you 2nd round picks each. Get rid of laird hopefully for a 2nd, chayce? Mchenry (lol)? butts? rob? crouch? tex?

and pretty much try attack that suns 1st pick (7 i believe) and get yourself 2 midfielders for the future. Do a rozee/butters that has helped port so so so much! they have the next 8 years set in the middle because of those guys. Like grab for example draper and lalor.

and if you have spare picks after take a key defender/ruck and welsh. and if possible a small forward.

i genuinely dont see how we are going to have this busy offseason (as promised by nicks and silvers on multiple ocassions) with the the talent that is out there. get neale bullen (ok great role player, old), cumming is fine, maybe a back up tall forward and key back, i.e lewis young. I dont see who you are going to get, hopefully by busy trade period they are talking about a busy draft.

I would be so excited having a midfiled to develop going into the future of curtin, draper, lalor, soligo, taylor, rankine, dawso, dowling, rachele maybe.

This is genuinely the last chance for the club to put itself in the best position going forward especially with tassy on the way. And for christ sake this midfield draft is unreal compared to prior. go for it!.

Yes, It's wasting time replacing assistants when it's clearly evident the senior coach is incompetent.

It's not fair on the new assistants either.

Good organisations fix the key problems, not skirt around them pretending nothing to see here.

Our senior players will always put up a fight when it comes to another contract
How have folks not realised the extent of the entitlement culture at the AFC.

It makes me feel ill watching port run around with rozee, butters and JHF. Elite midfield has been set up whilst AFC has spent the last 5 years pulling its pudin’

Agree with the first two. With JHF - we tried. If only NM had of realised from day 1 he was leaving...

I am writing this choking on my words a bit. We should head hunt some of Ports management team and fire some of ours. We like to make fun of Port, but they are around the mark every September.

I’ve been pulling my hair out all season watching this type of play from all our players.

There is so much fake pressure, sweating off and corralling players, instead attacking the player with the ball, which allows them to execute their disposal with essentially no pressure.

We stand a player like Fogarty on the 25m mark for kickouts and he slowly jogs while the opposition run to 25 and kicks the ball long. Compare that to other teams like Sydney who would commit to defending the kick out.

This is a hallmark of Nicks’s coaching. Players are getting away with being lazy and taking the easy option.

Yup. It's been happening for years.

You've got Nicks trying to convince us that he's focused on "Team first" footy.. What a joke.

We've got a lot of average players guided by a lot of average older guys at the club, guided by a lot of average coaches, guided by an average president, guided by an average CEO, guided by average board members.

The acceptance of mediocrity within the 4 walls at the AFC is hilarious. I hate to always go back to this but the only bloke who was finally getting somewhere with this club was P.Walsh.
