My Godson will be 45 this year. I still have a pic of the two of us in our Footscray jumpers with 31 on the back when he was one - the first time I saw him.

My mum would have been 100 years old later this year. My dad would have been 101 in May.

I arrived in Australia 50 years ago this August 27th - a week before my 23rd birthday.

I didn't choose my footy club until Round 1, 1976. Went to the Western Oval with another American teacher at our school - Essendon vs Footscray. She lived in Moonee Ponds so "rooted" for Essendon. I lived in Maribyrnong and went for Footscray. The Bulldogs lost by a point. I had my team. The red, white and blue colours were a bonus.

I started school in Melbourne in the late 70s and when I came home one day and asked my folks who'd only been in the country a little longer than you at the time which team we followed they looked at my blankly not really knowing footy from Friday back then. Fortunately we took to the local team which was Hawthorn, my brother who decided to support Richmond because he liked tigers spent many years questioning the wisdom of this decision.

My first day of teaching I was asked by some students who I barracked for. I didn't know what the word barrack meant. I did meet a family at church who barracked for North and asked me if I'd be interested in going to a match. I declined. Now, THAT was a good decision( though they won their first premiership a few weeks later).

That the 1997 AFL debuts of Port Adelaide Power and the Brisbane Lions are now closer in time to 1969 than to the present day. That Kathryn Erbe - the actress who played Dr. Leo Marvin's teenage daughter Anna in the 1991 comedy 'What About Bob?' - is turning 60 this year.

This was admittedly a case of 'Dawson's Creek Casting', where Kathryn Erbe was aged in her mid-20s playing a high school student aged in her mid-teens - sort of like Sydney Sweeney in Madame Webb last year - but it is still mind-blowing.

In 'What About Bob?' the rest of the Marvin family are played by Richard Dreyfuss who is only 18 years older than the actress who played his daughter, while Julie Hegarty who played the wife/mother was born in 1955 and just 10 years older than her on-screen daughter. The Marvin's younger son Sigmund was played by Charlie Korsmo, who born in 1978 was middle-school aged like his character, but a remarkable 13 years younger than his on-screen sister, despite about 4 years between their ages in the film.

I was so physically upset after that match that a woman who was sitting near me came over to comfort me. Right out of the "How to Pick Up Chicks" edition of Playboy. Too bad that she was older than I am today.
