I'm keen to know Freo supporters thoughts about Luke Jackson's 2 years at Freo thus far.

I think on the most part he's been pretty damn outstanding for you guys and you should be excited for what's to come from LJ.

I think Melbourne badly miss that second ruck option who can kick 30 goals a year. We did manage to convert one of our traded in picks for Caleb Windsor which softens the blow a little.

He's been moved in and out the ruck and hasn't had a good run at getting the chemistry with Amiss and Treacy down yet. If Darcy stays fit I think we'll learn a lot about LJ this year.
But I'd be lying if I said i wasn't a little concerned that he could turn out to be a jack of all trades, master of none, and compliments about his attributes generally are suffixed with 'for a guy of his size'.

Happy to have him but don't think his output has matched the price we paid yet, a few flashes of brilliance aside. His start to 2024 was unreal but I'd love to see it over a full season.

He looked in good nick on Saturday but still with the rehab group , will be ready to go R1

Like to see him play some mins as a ruck rover and let Reidy take the centre bounce crash and bash

For what its worth I was told by numerous people watching in the small shaded stand last Saturday that Luke battled tonsillitis for the last seven weeks of the season and also had a shin complaint.I think he's 100% on track to be an absolute gun with a good run with injury.Eg the first six weeks of last season but for the whole year. I dont get why we would keep playing someone for so long with a medical issue if what I was told is true.

So far it's arguable he isn't even an upgrade on Rory Lobb but Freo fans are so riddled with PTSD that they're happy he doesn't want to leave already or have a career-threatening injury.

Lobb as a structural player feels like a more reliable mark. His best season for us was 2022 (we made finals, go figure) and he was averaging 4.4 marks and 1.7 goals a game.

2023 from Jackson was superior to his most recent season, averaging 3.4 marks and 1 goal a game.

Most recent season, Jackson has 114 score involvements (39 shots at goal for 21 goals).
Best season for Lobb for us, 118 score involvements (74 shots at goal for 36 goals).

They are so close. Except Lobb is almost ten years older.

I think Jackson has time. Jackson is currently two years older than Lobb was when he was drafted.

I want Jackson to take the marks he gets his hands to, same issue Treacy had in his early years with us, same explosion in game impact when it's resolved.

Only Rory's parents would think that going from Lobb to Jackson was a downgrade. And even they would be persuaded if they continued to watch Freo games after he left.

I think Taylor laid it out pretty well. After replacing Rory with Jackson, we lost 15 goals and missed the finals.

Jackson is younger and seems to have more upside but so far it is all hypothetical.

Purple Jesus, Sully90 and King Huskii disagree. Big surprise. You don't need to spend much time here to know they aren't critical thinkers, they are cheerleaders.

Rubbish

Jackson rucked for half the year and made the AA squad. How did Rory go in 2023?

Jackson has performed better than Lobb at Freo in the past 2 seasons that Lobb has at the Bulldogs. A player leaving doesn’t rob you of their previous season’s output but of their next one.

I'm not sure you could say that Jackson was Lobbs direct replacement. You could say we replaced Hogan with Treacy and Lobb with Amiss. Where Jackson fits in to this puzzle...I dont know.

You could argue to make the comparison with Amiss given Lobb considered himself forward and not a ruck?

I guess it just shows the difference in our priorities. I'm not interested in All Australian selection. I care about playing in finals and winning premierships.

I agree, I don't think Lobb would have been better for us than he was for the Dogs, but he definitely played a very important structural role for us on moving the ball as the target for the long kick that brought it down or clunked it.

If we average their career outputs for only Freo:

Lobb:
Marks 4.48, Goals 1.18

Jackson:
Marks 3, Goals, 0.95

1.5 marks, 0.23 goals per game difference.

Compared to same age, Lobb is +0.3 goals per game, +2 marks per game (+0.4 marks i50) but Jackson is significantly higher in ruck stats (+10 hit outs, +2.4 clearances)

That compares Jackson's last year.

If you look at when they were both 22 Jackson beats him in basically every stat except contested marks (+0.4 to Lobb) and tackles inside fify (+0.1 to Lobb).

Given Jackson was playing under duress last year I think he will overtake Lobb and certainly is better than what we would have gotten out of Lobb in the three years since we lost him, but this is exactly why I said he should be highly valued on trading him out - we have no means of finding a structural replacement matching his output.

I can't see Jackson ever being a 40 goal forward like Lobb but we don't need him to. I just want him to start clunking marks at both ends of the ground.

I think a fairer way to look at this is to look at the combined output of each trio:

Hogan, Tabs and Lobb
Vs
Treacy, Jackson and Amiss

I know which 3 I'd want going forward.

Treacy has also played the backup ruck role as well so we have that versatility where we could throw big Jacko forward.

Direct comparisons are difficult but I can understand the points being made.

Lobb, at the peak of his career, while possessing areas of elite talent, gave half-arsed efforts, sulky vibes and was an overall disappointment.

Dogga, while eight and a half years younger, has played some sensational football at times for us while often battling manfully in a role he is not suited while Darcy was injured. He is a legitimate threat in the air and on the ground and is still arguably 4-5 years from his playing peak. Yes, he has a way to go, but the early signs are extremely encouraging.

Lobb has Jackson covered in one area and one area only, and that is maturity. I would bet everything I have that Dogga will have a far superior career than Lobb and will play in far higher achieving teams than him as well.

Making black and white statements about players, particularly big men, who are at polar opposites of their career trajectories is misleading and foolish.
