Hawks were at full strength as well
Lewis & Dear were missing, 2 KPFs.
They did put out a pretty strong side though. We were missing a heap of players, but the side we played did look pretty balanced.
No Hardwick or Impey who are walk up starts for them (even though Hardwick's bunny Cody didn't play). Mitch Lewis you can't count as he has barely played for 2 years, who knows if he even makes it back. Dear didn't smash us in the final but is also an unknown quantity still.

That being said our outs dwarfed theirs plus it was in Launy where they win 80-90% of their games.

When you look at what we offered tonight, then add Bont, Adz, Red, Marra, LJizz, Rhylee, Flea, Bailey Dale, JJ (most not too far away), I reckon we've got cause to be pretty damn optimistic.
I’m going to post like optimistic dog….but most of them played in the final last year and we got pumped……

Sometimes a chunk of injuries at a time can be a blessing in disguise and it's probably a good thing to hold our horses a little bit because most of the time it isn't.

It's still nice to get a little bit excited about playing well against the second flag favourite 2 weeks out from the season!
We flooded them in the re season game last year and look what happened. Lid on

I dont know about anyone else, but I am more optimistic for the season after last nights effort.
Commentators mentioned a few times that we had set the field up well to defend when Hawthorn were trying to move the ball, which says to me that our defensive system is in good shape.
Great tackling efforts even thought they didnt stick them all, but the intent was there.
Darce & Naughts working well in tandem.
Few of the pups showed a bit.

Matt Priddis won a Brownlow. He didnt kick the ball
We need to pivot expectations that he will be this all round damaging midfielder (he might develop into that) and expect him to be an elite inside midfielder in the clinches that feeds the ball out the damaging outside players.

We won't see the best of Sanders until he takes over from Libba as the number 1 inside mid.

One highlight that stood to me was Darcy’s mark from Naughton’s kick that he marked right in front with arms outstretched.

There is not a single defender in the league who could defend that ball without giving away a free kick once he has a clear run and jump at the ball.

Have been saying it for weeks the injuries aren't the doom and gloom being made out we have the kids who need the exposure we have the depth now we didn't for a while (Kennedy/Harmes)

JOD has certainly worked hard in the off-season.

After last years final it was clear his strength was a weakness, so being a professional he worked hard on it and shows why he would have to be one of the biggest steals in the draft period.

He will replace Lobb as the high key back in the medium turn but has added more strings to his bow

As a late starter, he would have done less work in the gym than most. Looks like we're rectifying that.

Other clubs just need to find a 267cm defender from somewhere who also has elite agility.
Problem solved.

Priddis also ran bit harder to defend than Sanders does at times. It's something that Sanders will learn in time. Matt Kennedy is going to be good for him in that regard.

There is no issue with sanders not kicking as much and being an in and under distributor but in saying that he needs to be getting it 32 times a game not 22 to have the impact.

I thought he was decent yesterday without standing out. Was in and under a lot and fed the ball in transition. Plus 9 tackles.

In saying that it’s his second year and he will clearly have growth to come through building strength alone. But would like to see a bit more from him

Just need our other players to realise this and execute it.

Naughton Darcy on a lead with the ball out in front of them well weighted is unstoppable.

I like the bit about him throwing Sicily to the ground!
The ‘Piglet’ Watson had a crack at Crofty and he ragdolled the fat little pr1ck and threw him to the ground as well… I like this a lot! Crofty doesn’t take any shit from Piglet!
It's good to see we are getting some mongrel in team - for too many years this team has been way too nice

Yes, we were a lot better than in the game against Essendon. There seemed to be a system that was working. And with so many of our best players to come back in, it's looking hopeful.

The Essendon game was in shocking conditions where we literally substited half the team at half time..

Interesting to see the pushes in the back by Sicily when Lobb and Croft were pushed under the ball with the latter giving Van der a solid head knock. The umpires missed these totally, fortunately the game is in good hands with the AFL admin as they have no problems with players receiving injuries in two other games to ridiculous pushes in a contested situation. The directions to umpires are ludicrous and make Gil look like a good administrator.

David King has been banging on about this and raised another incident from the Lions/Crows game last night on SEN today but nothing on our game and the incident with Croft and Vanders. The only umpiring question he raised from our game is that the umps missed a high tackle on the Wizard late in the game that was there according to him.
