Maybe they were ruthless in demanding the best from the playing group, and had a sustainable game plan for the players at their disposal?
You can still be close to the squad, without them being too chummy that they lose respect for you, and that they aren't afraid of you.
You still need to know you're the boss, and you'll call the shots, like it or lump it.
And they need to know you will blister the paint off the walls with a decent spray if they do the wrong things - fear!
