Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

I named a bunch of players in the game day thread, but Campbell and Hayward were 2 I was really disappointed in. Hayward only had an impact in the 3rd quarter which isn't good enough for senior player. Campbell didn't have an impact at all which just isn't good enough at this point in his career.

Players like Sheldrick and Warner Jr I can forgive because they're still new to the team.

Rampe was shit but he's old and we can't and shouldn't be relying on him anymore - there were warning signs last year.

Florent was dreadful but at least he showed signs that he could impact the game, just made dumb errors.

In terms of positive - Wicks was outstanding and Amartey was very good. Melican was mostly solid. McInerney had some good moments but didn't get enough of the footy. Not much outside of that which suggests it's probably a good sign that we were right in it up until the last, so that's something I guess.
Campbell is definitely concerning, good kick when he gets it but he's been tried in almost every position now and no matter where he plays he's a low possession player, consistently doesn't get involved enough.

The thing that worries me is that the stoppages and clearances have been a major weakness for several years now and Cox has been our midfield coach over that time. He's clearly come in with some fresh ideas elsewhere on the ground, not so much in the middle
Agreed, but perhaps it's also down to personnel. Mills in there at his best would make a big difference. We drafted Sheldrick presumably knowing it was a weakness. We brought in Adams because it was an issue. But injuries have just really hampered our ability to fix the issue. I'd have liked to see Adams spend more time in there tonight, but he got hurt as soon as he was put there and maybe that's part of why they really try to manage his time in the midfield, or maybe they just think he's too slow and his disposal is too poor.

I guess the fact that Rowbottom was so far below his best at the contest and with his tackling tonight didn't help. Hopefully one of Sheldrick or Cleary can make a difference in there this year and we can get a fit Mills back.

Case of which Hawthorn player is going to mark this Blakey kick. At least recognise it isn’t working tonight and try something else.
I think what I find so frustrating about this board is how inconsistent with criticism it is.

Blakey gets good disposal stats because he takes kick ins, does sone incredible things but otherwise is an absolute liability all night barely anything said.

Rowbottom stinks it up kicking 3 metres in a contest when a handball would do, gets 2 more contested possessions than the subbed Sheldrick and Sheldrick has dozens of posts about him it being up to the level etc and Rowbottom nothing.

Papley yet another game without laying a tackle. Happens in about a quarter of his games. Absent all night, but it's Campbell with 4 tackles who shat the bed because papley kicked a good one.

It's been like this for years but it's so frustrating.

Campbell had a good game for the limited service he got 8 touches at 87% with 3 score involvements
Isn’t a guy like Campbell a bit wasted in that role? He’s such a damaging kick - wouldn’t we want him getting his hands on it 15-20 times a game? I like the idea of finding a permanent role for him and sticking with it, but I don’t know why we haven’t maximised his talents to date.

He has never shown an abilty at any level to get a lot of the ball. He’s normally 10-14 possessions at most and it will be less now but he’s never had the ability to find the ball

We have a horrible midfield but we have Heenz and Chad

What a weird squad

I think the midfield is good still, just missing 2 of its best as well.

But also no ruck service tonight

Looks like we lost the ruck battle because Grundy had to do the heavy lifting due to no McLean being there.

Also doesn't help a ruckman out when you tap it but your mids run away from the ball

Disagree.

Grundy is a former AA ruck who is now getting consistently beaten by solid citizens.

If tonight was a one-off stinker, fair enough. But it’s not. I can’t recall a really good game after the mid-season bye last year.

Everyone has bad games. But when it becomes a trend, it’s a problem.

Many of our problems are starting in the ruck contest. And his impact around the ground has fallen away pretty dramatically.

Taken at pick 5.. you need much more well you hope for more with that investment especially 5 years in the system

Maybe he only had a very good 13 or so games left in the tank?

Seemingly unpopular, but I actually thought Blakey was alright tonight defensively tbh. Can't remember him getting beaten one-on-one too many times and we still saw his dash out of defence (though not as often as we'd like).

I don't want him playing on gun key forwards, but I think key forwards that are only really serviceable, like Chol, are good match-ups for him. If they're not overly fast or particularly strong marks they're less likely to hurt him the other way when he's rebounding. Won't always work, but I can see the merit in it.

Think we need to forget he was pick 5, we got Gulden in the same draft so let’s call it even.

I’ve never been a Campbell fan but let’s see how he goes for a month in this role otherwise let’s move on. If he’s ever making it for us it’s going to be as a HF, he’s an awful HBF and he can’t find the pill enough to be in the middle

Second half was better but he drives me postal him trying to beat 8 guys and then passing it to a bloke with some dinky handball or kick when the first option of a solid 35m kick was an easy out.

Wish we had a massive clean out over summer. Every side changed something except for us..Can't keep trying to polish a turd. Make up, dim lights and 4000 beers don't really change the reality.

No you can't - we instead chose to roll ours in glitter.
