Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

The club that is the team and the coaching staff needed to sort out the ruck situation in the off season. Having mcinebey play in the ruck - a seriously slight winger without the vertical leap of one dean towers was a recipe for disaster. Of course then got compounded as their ruck run into the hole 20 metres out from goal when Grundy was on the bench and helped himself to a goal 3/4 times.

Grundy and the mids just have to be better - Grundy at not giving high frees every friggibg first quarter putting us on the back foot repeatedly and we have to stop having the ball just run through the centre square. It’s one on my personal peeves when defenders get blamed after an opposition mid runs through the centre square untouched. Blaming Paton when a mid is streaming towards goal and the ball is kicked comfortably advantage side of the attacker is a failure of the mids not the defenders.

Florent sheldrick Roberts all made terrible decisions and turned it over. Arguably our last genuine opportunity to get back in the game was Roberts just pumping it forward instead of using Blakey - but that decisions stupid though it was did not meet florents kick which was as putrid as it was bizarre. I don’t actually know who he was kicking as air was between two swans, both of whom had turned their backs to the ball and were clearly hiding. That he nonetheless went that way and missed both players added skill error to straight out disgraceful decision making.

Melicans decision to double fist an uncontested Chest mark shortly before the godawful kick from florent was equally brainless. Melican may well be a defence first player but putting the ball back on the ground was just so lacking in conpusure

I think ladhans may well be a better player than Grundy at the moment

As I watched the game ebb away I wondered whether long ore had left the team to coz having concluded that the team was in a slide. I’m not sure if it but there are.a lot of players who the jury is out on as to whether they will make it. Warner 2, Roberts, sheldrick, McDonald, green, hanily. I don’t think we can guarantee that any of them will make it and amartey melican mccartin would not be in the top dozen in their respective positions.

When I saw the draw I thought we were a serious chance of going 0-5 this season and certainly 0-3. The resilience of this side is going to be tested in the next couple of weeks.

Ruck department was fine with McLean backing up Grundy but now that we have no McClean because we need a 2 tall forward line Amartey isn't good enough in the ruck to carry the load and it falls apart. Go figure

Grundy getting burned out from 89% RCs tonight when he averaged 76% last year

People view medium forwards as

0 goals bad performance

1 goal eh

2+ goals good performance

Campbell had a good game for the limited service he got 8 touches at 87% with 3 score involvements
I think that's overly generous.

I reckon look at Rayner, Ah Chee, Lohmann and Cameron from the Lions as benchmarks.

To be honest, I'm not expecting Campbell to be as good as any of them. But he fell quite short of their output last year.

I actually thought we would have been a contested ball side tonight at Cole face with all the off season stuff and manic pressure. Concerns imo about this group

Tackles also
The thing that worries me is that the stoppages and clearances have been a major weakness for several years now and Cox has been our midfield coach over that time. He's clearly come in with some fresh ideas elsewhere on the ground, not so much in the middle

I don’t care that mcinebey was made to ruck - you can set up knowing you will lose it.

What I’m really angry about is that their ruck just drifts forward and no one bothers to even man up ten tallest bloody player on the field 20 metres from their goal over and over

I come in piece.
I thought the swans absolutely nailed the gameplan in the first and 3rd. Kept it low, hit players in space with short kicks to leads and prevented the hawks from zoning.

The 2nd and 4th quarters, I don't know if it was fatigue, or players forgetting the system, but the swans then started going long and allowing the hawks the time to zone, then spread.

If the kicking is on like the 1st and 3rd, watch out afl. It's the plan b and c which is needed, which I think has cost you in big moments the past few years

Yeah, pretty accurate assessment. Just a complete lack of a Plan B when our gameplan is failing. Tbf Cox probably deserves more time for us to assess if he has that, but we still appeared to be lacking with that tonight.

Rain and scoreboard pressure for the 4th imo. Maybe nerves in the 1st? Getting familiar with changes but agree. That line up was not selected for kicking it long style of play.

We looked good when changing angles and switching the ball. Imo it made Hawks put more effort into their defensive system which blunted their attack a bit.

Why did we recruit him?
Play him & remove one of the make believe defenders.

Not sure but we are a tall short in defence , Rampe ,Blakey, Paton barely combined for one tall today.

I did really want to swap to a 2 tall set-up but it really didn't work tonight. The intercept marks killed us.

The problem is that's still been a problem for us with 3 talls, so I'm just not sure how we fix it.

I liked what I saw from McCartin as a forward, but with Rampe cooked, I'm not sure if it's something we can persist with unless Snell or Edwards come on in a big way this year.

Quite a few costly free kicks given in front of goal don’t help. The game changed twice. When the Umps reviewed and saw a deviation changing the momentum and when the rain came. Make it three - every time Florent touched the ball and made sure any hard work was undone.

Congrats though better team on the night for longer.
