Autopsy Opening Round = GWS 104-52 Collingwood

That was as bad as a game as a i seen for a while. Hoping it's a one off and not going to dictate our season.

We looked unfit, our forward entries were poor, just didn't look like we wanted it and it we aren't careful the season will be done before it starts like last year. Disappointing really, maybe the hunger really isn't there?

GWS had so many numbers streaming forward when they went on a forward chain and then there were times they turned it over and I thought here we go counter attack we got them but they still had all their numbers back as well, does this just come down to work rate?

We had plenty of inside 50s but our entries were poor. So frustrating just contiuously kicking the ball to Sam Taylor.

It was a very very disappointing performance considering the outs that GWS had, yes we had outs as well but they had bigger outs in my opinion if you count Briggs as well. Hope we review this one brutally and we get a massive response v Port.

Expected scores as shown in the Herald Sun were 95 to 80. Highlights to me what was obvious to the naked eye, that we were missing too many easy shots.

While I would prefer we don’t become Melbourne supporters, pretty sure we lost even on “expected score”

Again, inaccuracy isn’t why we lost this game

It is however, why we lost by so much

Hope everyone woke up and realised the season isn’t over after Round 0.

The effort definitely wasn’t there yesterday and we hope that it was a wake up call. We should beat Port and the Dogs at the G, suddenly we’re 2-1 with positive %.

There are still 21 games to be played. Yesterday was a blip on the radar and when the fixture got released, this was a game that we probably pencilled in as a loss. Yes they had injuries but they’re obviously a well coached outfit. It’s not like we lost to a bottom 8 side.

On to the next one!
Still 21 games to play, you say..
Which game are we forfeiting and not playing?
😀

That's pretty much what the expected scores showed. We shouldn't have lost by as much if we kicked what we should have. Membrey dropped a beautiful pass from Daicos that resulted in a 2 goal turnaround. Yes we played poorly but not the end of the world.

Watching replay for large chunks of the first 3 quarters we were well in the game. We didn’t convert our chances. They did.

The only quarter I’ll accept inaccuracy truly hurting us was the first quarter

We had a chance to really apply some scoreboard pressure and we messed it up.

After that? GWS were playing rope-a-dope with us for 3 quarters. You could see it even on TV. Their backline was the only line at full strength and they trusted their backs to withstand the pressure, which we also helped with our entires.

Once we tired ourselves out, they just went bang.

We were really reactive around the footy. I think the biggest issue outside of not being able to match their running was what happened when we won ground balls in traffic - no one seemed to see it coming and got on the move - so it was a handball to a stationary bloke who was still in the middle of congestion - we just couldn't get it to the outside for unpressured possessions - hence a heap of hack kicks forward.

I don't think our lead up with one proper practice match against an uncompetitive team had us prepared for a bloody good team.

I’ve been concerned that the practice game against the Tigers was not great preparation as it looked like circle work.

GWS might be the best team in the comp and certainly bring high pressure, so bit of a wake up call.

Would we structure up better if one of the talls switched to defence and Cox comes into the team?

I like that Hawthorn experiment with their players and are flexible.

Cox is a massive upgrade in the ruck compared to McStay or any other part time.

I think one of our strengths is that we have a number of players who are flexible, and can play in a variety of positions.
In terms of the MMM's, we do need to give it a few games to see how it can develop, but l also would be tempted to bring back Coxy, as l agree with you about his ruck work, and the Cameron/Cox duo is a more proven one, and works well.
If Coxy is back, you would feel Membrey makes way, but did we get Membrey in to be a VFL player? l don't think so.
So we could move a McStay to defence as the CHB, where he started his career at Brisbane, and have Mihocek, Membrey and a resting Cox/Cameron up forward OR We keep the MMM's up forward and get Cameron/Cox to drop back behind the ball and be that loose intercept marker in D50 OR we just play Cox off the bench and pinch hit him in the ruck to give Cameron a chop out.
It's going to be a big month ahead particularly after yesterday's result, and if we continue to struggle we could see a few positional changes occur......

I hope the playing group respond as appropriate.

It sucks that Collingwood is the bad news story of the round, but that's all this is—round zero. ONTTNO.

Pretty accurate headline though.

I agree. That's exactly how they looked yesterday.

Trying to paint it any other way is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Still, it's just one bad game, a very bad game.

Oh in this specific game the inaccuracy was just an excuse. We’ve won plenty of games kicking inaccurately.

If we had lost this game by say, 20 points. Then you could blame inaccuracy. But if you flip 6.16 to 16.6 we still lost lol

Even if we kicked straighter? They would have just won it out of the middle and scored when they needed to anyway.

The problem wasn’t inaccuracy. The problems were no pressure, no defensive effort anywhere across the ground and terrible transition. Among other things.

Anytime we even looked like we might mount a comeback, they simply scored a goal or two to snuff it out.

We were never winning this game and no amount of accuracy was going to change that. Accuracy would have just made the losing margin smaller.
We won CP, GBall, and Clearances and tackles I50, so you’re wrong about pressure. The only thing you’re right about is transition.
As for poor kicking, without scoreboard pressure GWS were buoyed, and good luck to them.
If we converted our 3rd QTR dominance into Goals it could easily have been a different result.

Agree with your take on Haw. That flexibility will be telling in many games, it’s going to be a huge advantage for them.
