Autopsy Opening Round = GWS 104-52 Collingwood

Round Zero is a farce.
The whole concept of playing in March is ******ed but playing an afternoon in
27 degree heat with 70% humidity is actually assault on the players.
Whoever scheduled the match should be hung.
Fuktards.

Agree, and I would have said it even if we won yesterday.

The season starts two weeks too early. The spate of injuries across the league over the off season might be a contributing factor to the early start as well.

I have stewed, simmered and 24 hours later I am cold. Here are some thoughts. I feel the coaches are trying to be too clever with the magnets and forgetting simple truths.

Firstly, Jaicos is a winger, not a half back/quarter back.
Secondly, Steele is a winger, not a run with, inside mid.
Thirdly, Lipinski is a up and back mid, running straight up and down the spine.
Fourthly, WHE is a winger that is capable of playing as a mobile forward/back, he should not be starting as a forward.

These players should be rotating, one always on the bench with Crisp able to chip in on the left wing or up and down the spine.

If any of these players are playing any other position, in my opinion, it's dumb decision making and not utilising their strengths, which is their ability to run all day, which compromises other players that can't run all day, which makes us look slow towards the back end of quarters/games, which is what happened yesterday, giving away 7 of GWS's 9 goals from Q1 - Q3 in red time and then being completely overrun in the last quarter, making it look like men vs boys.

Like, who is even in charge of this shit? F*ckin seriously, give me the reigns and yesterday wouldn't have happened that way.

Fifthly, Reef is not a full back. Frampton has proven he is a decent lock down full back, Frampton is bigger, stronger and experienced. Reefs advantage over Frampton is his mobility, but that's not the roll, Framton's advantage is his strength/mass, that is the roll. Frampton is also far better overhead and has a far better leg, Reef has a poor kicking technique, almost trash kicking technique, this magnet shift has me perplexed as to wtf the coaches are seeing/doing. I would even have Dean ahead of Reef. Soz Reef, I love ya but you got confidence issues and poor skill/technique.

Sixthly, yesterday was one of the weakest performances from a physicality perspective I have ever seen from Collingwood, in relation to the experience of the players vs output, ever.

GWS had most of the possession, yet they had the top 5 tacklers on the day, with even Lauchie Keefe getting 5 tackles lol.

Our best tacklers were Steele, McCreery and Cameron, none of them are mids (I acknowledge Steele was playing as a mid, but as I mentioned earlier, he should be a winger), therefore, none of our actual mids were in the top 12 tacklers of the day, with Moore being our sixth best, like, how is Darcy Moore in our top 6 tacklers for a game? He shouldn't be in the top 20.

Which brings me to the conclusion that:

1) We are in trouble if the coaches persist with these laughable magnet games.

2) They are not fit enough.

3) They are not physical enough.

Those 3 issues are huge issues and in combination, is what makes a bottom 4 team.

Kingsley openly saying they would be physical and violent, pushing the boundries etc, and they were, and we let them be, we tried to get bumpy, (looking at Maynard, who pissed me off with his stupidity) rather than be hard at the ball, and in the end, it was embarrassing and pathetic.

Great reasons not to watch 7, listen to SEN, or read the AFL website.
The only show worth watching is First Crack on Fox Footy. No gossip and innuendo, just a proper analysis of the games.

Kane has filled a gap in the market, but I think people will grow tired of him very quickly. He’s definitely the opposite of “less is more”.

There’s still two 6 breaks to come and we have 3 games in 12 days
And just like last year we get short changed .. they’ll make us play opening round against Sydney or giants indefinitely while they are both good teams
This nsw thing will only go on with us while the nsw teams are good
As soon as they aren’t they’ll shift us to a better team first up

If it isn’t the impending rainy game that wasn’t, or the shifting surface that didn’t, it’s now the three games in twelve days that won’t be the case. The afl just have it in for us don’t they?

Here’s a clue for all the day counters out there. If we play on a Sunday, Saturday, Friday, that’s three games in thirteen days.

3 games in 12-13 days to start with again
Your missing the point by chasing what you consider imaginary conspiracy theory posts

You’ve nailed some truths. Crisp and Lipinkski’s best footy is in the middle. Crisp is better than Pendles in the midfield. The best way for Jaicos to go to the wing is for Parker or Markov to dominate VFL. My gut feeling is once Parker takes back the half back role he will stay in the team.
I’m not sure Elliot and Shultz can play in the same forward line. I can see this forward line changing a lot until it settles.
The big question mark is where is Pendles best position especially if Mitchell and Degoey return in the next month. It should only be a pinch hit in the middle not permanent.
I am disappointed lessons from last year have not been addressed and it was much of the same stuff. A team opening us up on fast transition after a turnover. We still give up a lot of territory.

Let’s hope it was a case of the coaches and players just got it wrong yesterday with new additions to the team.

Degoey, Houston, Mitchell and Cox all have roles to play at some stage if fit so some serious adjustments need to happen.

Good read.

Im not even mad at the players. Angry at the club. After last years opening round fiasco, Pies said no not again unless everyone had to come up and play games north. No doubt the afl has funnelled some brown paper bags our way, because that narrative disappeared very quickly, up we go into terrible conditions that GWS have trained in all pre season, shock our fittest player is cramping by the 3rd quarter. Complete and utter shitshow. Shame on the club for having no spine.
Yep, I'll burn my membership if we opt in for a 3rd year in a row and play the Fn Giants in this farcical start to a season.

An eye test for you is a good idea if that was your view.

Keeffe rather than Briggs probably made the contested marking harder - he's a relatively competent KPD who can spoil, Briggs aint that.

What else would it be other than “the eye test”?

I don’t watch games with stats on hand updating in real time

I watch the game and might look into stats after the fact if I’m curious about something. I didn’t know Perryman had 27 possessions until later. But regardless of his stats, I noticed him. He was good. He had impact. He did good things.

Yet Josh Daicos had 28 possessions and I’d argue he was nowhere near as good as Perryman.

So yeah, on paper, according to the stats, Darcy appeared to have one of his better games.

As a viewer watching the game, the game he played to me didn’t align with what those stats showed. Particularly given that he lost his direct opponent in the first quarter.

Well that was hard to watch yesterday. One match does not a season make but does one match a season “unmake”?
Sheesh.
Sick of these pre season matches played for 4pts as a NSW / QLD marketing exercise. I disagree with McRae here. If they want the marketing make it two interstate derby’s.
J Daicos is no HBF agreed.
We’ll be better for the run, better with Houston and JDG in the side.

Why did the team continually bang it in the air like they did repeatedly? 🤦‍♂️

A lot of lessons to be learned as they say but not sure about the learnings.

Pretty sure your last paragraph is an actual conspiracy theory.

It’s not twelve to thirteen. It’s thirteen

I don't see a winning game plan. I thought post 2023 we could slow our manic game down and win via skilled ball movement. It hasn't worked, why I am not a coach. We served up a risk taking approach during 2022/3. Only a few games this year to try the same approach with the new personnel (ie Houston) then lets see us try whatever. Please. We have done that in trade, we need to do that on the field. We have talent and experience, open the game up, take the risks, be the new coach with nothing to lose you were a few years ago fly.

Yeah well, he didn't pass the eye test for me. I just expected more impact from someone who didn't have a genuine opponent for 3 quarters.

Again, I get people finding it strange, but it's not like Darcy Cameron has been some whipping boy for me. In fact this might be the first time since he's been at the club that I've criticised a performance of his.

Maybe it reminded me a lot of the types of games Grundy used to play for us where he padded the stats really nicely, but didn't really feel his impact on the game.

Daicos had 17 possessions to half time despite the hard tag. But would you say Daicos had played a great game to that point?
I was going to post something about Specsavers light heartedly but geez mentioning stats padding with reference to Cameron is just silly.

We finished strongly last season when we got players back. Lost to the swans by 3 pts, then beat Bris. Both grand finalists btw. Then our first game this season we got beaten.

That’s not something to panic over just yet.

Let’s wait a few rounds shall we.

Technically I was talking about Grundy

Maybe padding was the wrong word. More just that while the stats showed one thing - for me, the eye test showed another

It's often easy to miss who has played well, but missing a bloke taking big contested marks down the line is unusual and to then describe him as being "obliterated and really poor" is even more unusual, particularly if you're not seeing much.

I just think you've stopped being a high functioning alcoholic and are now just muttering emoji642 over and over again until something sensical occasionally breaks through.
