The numbers NEVER lie - they don’t have emotional baggage like supporters.
So you were wrong about our contested game.
How we used possession from contest is a different issue.
Numbers do mislead. I've seen hugely influential games from Anthony Rocca when he had five or six possessions. Even my boy Coxy fits that bill, contesting, knocking the pill on, halving aerial contests, yet many supporters would brand a five-possession game a dud performance and be calling for the player to be axed.

I have stewed, simmered and 24 hours later I am cold. Here are some thoughts. I feel the coaches are trying to be too clever with the magnets and forgetting simple truths.

Firstly, Jaicos is a winger, not a half back/quarter back.
Secondly, Steele is a winger, not a run with, inside mid.
Thirdly, Lipinski is a up and back mid, running straight up and down the spine.
Fourthly, WHE is a winger that is capable of playing as a mobile forward/back, he should not be starting as a forward.

These players should be rotating, one always on the bench with Crisp able to chip in on the left wing or up and down the spine.

If any of these players are playing any other position, in my opinion, it's dumb decision making and not utilising their strengths, which is their ability to run all day, which compromises other players that can't run all day, which makes us look slow towards the back end of quarters/games, which is what happened yesterday, giving away 7 of GWS's 9 goals from Q1 - Q3 in red time and then being completely overrun in the last quarter, making it look like men vs boys.

Like, who is even in charge of this shit? F*ckin seriously, give me the reigns and yesterday wouldn't have happened that way.

Fifthly, Reef is not a full back. Frampton has proven he is a decent lock down full back, Frampton is bigger, stronger and experienced. Reefs advantage over Frampton is his mobility, but that's not the roll, Framton's advantage is his strength/mass, that is the roll. Framton is also far better overhead and has a far better leg, Reef has a poor kicking technique, almost trash kicking technique, this magnet shift has me perplexed as to wtf the coaches are seeing/doing. I would even have Dean ahead of Reef. Soz Reef, I love ya but you got confidence issues and poor skill/technique.

Sixthly, yesterday was one of the weakest performances from a physicality perspective I have ever seen from Collingwood, in relation to the experience of the players vs output, ever.

GWS had most of the possession, yet they had the top 5 tacklers on the day, with even Lauchie Keefe getting 5 tackles lol.

Our best tacklers were Steele, McCreery and Cameron, none of them are mids (I acknowledge Steele was playing as a mid, but as I mentioned earlier, he should be a winger), therefore, none of our actual mids were in the top 12 tacklers of the day, with Moore being our sixth best, like, how is Darcy Moore in our top 6 tacklers for a game? He shouldn't be in the top 20.

Which brings me to the conclusion that:

1) We are in trouble if the coaches persist with these laughable magnet games.

2) They are not fit enough.

3) They are not physical enough.

Those 3 issues are huge issues and in combination, is what makes a bottom 4 team.

Kingsley openly saying they would be physical and violent, pushing the boundries etc, and they were, and we let them be, we tried to get bumpy, (looking at Maynard, who pissed me off with his stupidity) rather than be hard at the ball, and in the end, it was embarrassing and pathetic.

Go Pies.....
Our lack of physicality was my biggest concern. We looked intimidated and they looked like they knew it and as a supporter that is quite shattering.

Yep, I'll burn my membership if we opt in for a 3rd year in a row and play the Fn Giants in this farcical start to a season.

I think the best start to the season would be for every team to play in their home state.

If they are desperate for the interstate teams to gain exposure - play the NSW and QLD derbies in the first week and the remaining matches in second week.

How the club thinks is a good idea is right up there with the flag unfurling from last year.

Numbers never lie?

Seriously?

After calling yourself a mathematics “protégé” you say numbers never lie about football?

Mate…c’mon

Nick Daicos had 17 possessions to half time

Would you then say he had had a good game to that point? There’s possessions and then there’s possessions.

Stats can 100% lie. Because stats on their own don’t tell the whole story

I’m all for travel, but time for someone else to have a go. We don’t want to monopolise every concept the AFL comes up with.
Maybe part of this deal to help Giants garner more support is for us to get smashed by them in these games. Everyone loves a winner, hey? 🤣

Fair enough. Maybe I’m the one who needs Specsavers as I thought Cameron was in our top two yesterday.

No. You don’t need Specsavers.

It’s completely ok that you saw it differently to how I did.

I’m not going to have a meltdown over it like some here have (not you) over my opinion.

We finished strongly last season when we got players back. Lost to the swans by 3 pts, then beat Bris. Both grand finalists btw. Then our first game this season we got beaten.

That’s not something to panic over just yet.

Let’s wait a few rounds shall we.
Yeah, kinda agree but we didn't make the finals. I get that we weren't that far off but that is the safe bet: close so lets try again with the same and maybe lady luck will favour us. The key point I would make in regard to this exchange is we have gone - in trading - for short term results vs long term pain. I want to see our club play like this, coaching staff & players. We are not building, this is the year to make it, grand final or at least serious finals.

Fade out this year and its a total rebuild. We either see wins or at least every attempt at wins. I get that attempts at wins can look worse that playing it safe but take the punt fly and staff, because that is what the club has done. Not being fit enough, if that is a truth, is acceptable as a plan that works in our favour. If it doesn't unacceptable.

If fly is behind our current plan to win premierships, all in kinda thing, I would sack him if it didn't work at the end of the year and he hadn't tried every game plan under the sun. MI

Pretty much everyone saw it differently to you.
Cameron had a decent game, clearly our best player.

Blind Freddy could tell you that DC had a good game and was our best. Maybe the expectations are too high for him but seemed like a typical game aside from the missed set shot. Still thought he was solid down the line and filling the hole down back.

The issue with games like this is when the opposition team lose their ruck, they go into every contest expecting to lose the hit out so they adjust accordingly.

Cannot believe many saying J Daicos shouldn’t be playing half back. He played the last 5 games there last year , was in the coaches votes in 3 of those, and very good in the other two. He had 28 touches yesterday, he was reasonable, and will get better. Houston back in will really free up more run from Josh & Quaynor.

I think David King got it right, and yours truly 😂, the defensive running was non existent yesterday, we were not defending overly high yet they had players simply working harder to get to contest and the want to get forward.
I don’t subscribe to poor kicking etc as the cause, and I was disappointed to hear Fly reference it to be honest.
Plain and simple we had our pants pulled down around the ground, in nearly every aspect.
Couple that with the declining form of some players, it’s somewhat concerning.

We Kicked Straighter we been in game longer at least

It is 1st game but agree some Alarming Signs was shown

My proof was your criticism of DC that you were forced to backtrack on, once the numbers proved you wrong.

The whole Global sports industry is based on stats - so I think you’re out on a limb on this one.

99% of the time a 5 possession game is a Dud performance. To condemn numbers as misleading by quoting the exception ie the 1%, I don’t think is a convincing argument.

And rating the 5 possession game as a good game is often indicative of the viewer having too much faith in their own biases.

On Kane, at least he does show Nick some respect

Nah. As I said on Twitter and has since been proven only days later, that’s Kane’s setup

He very much put Nick at number 1 with a view to tear him down the moment he slips even a little bit

Which as expected, he has done

He’s torn into a kid who had a WELL documented interrupted preseason from foot issues? Interesting take

No, I disagree that he was the best.

I think Moore, Quaynor were more impressive since they went against the pressure. Darcy Cameron had no competition on the ruck and he was baited to tap the ball to Giant players advantage that led to a couple of goals in the first half. Darcy Cameron was in the top 5 Pies player on the day, but not the best on my book. Can't just put up stats, need to have positive impact.

Pies Fans saying that the Numbers we where not that bad.

Well Stats can lie and have lied in the Game vs GWS

Yes IF we Kicked Straight been more Closer Game but GWS easily out played us

Trust my Eyes more then Stats

For me it's just where I personally think he's more valuable. It's not a criticism of him playing HB or how he played yesterday at all.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to seeing him play HB with Houston.
