Once our defense is forced to defend the short kick, it kills our entire game plan and we can't find a way to score.

How many times did we see Richmond chip to a guy along the line, then the deeper defender come up to the mark, then another chip kick, then the next defender come up to the mark etc etc.

Gives the oposition an open forward line and easy scoring opportunities and if we win the ball back we have nobody to kick to forward of the ball.

It's like we are trying to use our HFF and FP players as additional midfielders, which works ok at the start of the game when we are fresh, but as soon as fatigue kicks in we can't score.

Its the same problem we had in the Brisbane PF fade out. Should have been fixed by now.

I'm not getting that the skills were there in the first half
Carlton dominated in the first ... and blew a lot of opportunities to be further ahead.
Start with inaccuracy for Goal. Isn't that a 'skill'..?
Richmond dominated the second ... not Carlton

Carlton's skills are atrocious ... and I blame the Coach.
Richmond's handball and accuracy for Goal was elite ... ours wasn't. Spooners deserved the win

I don't understand the criticism of Young. He has never played a game at bad as Haynes played last night. He knows his limitations and can play multiple positions
"Young has never played a game as bad as one of the worst individual performances you could ever witness" is not exactly a ringing endorsement of Lewy's mediocre footballing ability.

Things are never as bad as they seem - sometimes they are worse.
People might scoff at this but I genuinely feel like a bottom four finish, and perhaps a wooden spoon, is a possibility, and a far more realistic scenario than competing in finals. We are teetering on the edge of a full-blown on-field implosion.

There are not many teams, at all, I am confident we beat. Not even a North, for example. I would 100% tip North to beat us: Xeri and their mids would smash ours. I would be confident against West Coast in Melbourne, that's probably it.

Just imagine this for a moment: we finish last and have no first round pick. It's possible. We have been playing like shit for a long time, last night was not some aberration.

We'll get out act together enough to avoid bottom four. Competing for a top four, even top 6 position however looks highly unlikely.

OK - surely 18 hours is long enough for me to write something without emotions getting the better of me.

I have always been in the "supporter" rather than "fan-atic" camp and despite years of torture I have always tried to remain positive but last night was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Honestly that was embarrassing - the meekness with which we capitulated to a truly ordinary side was astounding but what is worse - it wasn't truly surprising.

To see professional footballers unable to his a handpass from 3m away, to watch players repeatedly drop routine marks and miss simple kicks was infuriating and so terrible no structure could withstand it.

Right now it is hard not to think we may have already blown our season in a year that is going to be so tight a loss to a bottom 4 team could be fatal.

But where to from here - well wholesale changes are unlikely and probably unwise, but I would like to see an apology made on the clubs website from the players, I think Docherty should come out (yes he had 14 touches in a quarter but went at 50% efficiency, missed 2 gettable goals and gave away 2 to the Tigers), Haynes put his hand up for worst on ground but I don't see a legitimate alternative unless we go for Wilson or Carroll (?) unless and perhaps we try Will White instead of Evans - but it all seems like shuffling the deck chairs.

P.S. - is it just me who thinks Walsh is way over rated

Exactly. The skills are there

So why do you think we keep dropping away? Is that skills or coaching/culture
Last night it looked like we had never player in greasy conditions before - we were fine before the dew set in but as the night progressed it looked we we were a giraffe on roller skates, few players could one touch a ground ball and hitting a target by hand or foot was almost impossible.

Take me back to the rebuilding days. At least we had a future to look forward to. This current team is not winning a premiership ever! No juice left to squeeze.

Blow it up
In true Carlton fashion a rebuild is in order without a first rounder this year and tassie coming in to collect all the top end talent.

To think of the money some of these players are getting makes me sick. There are probably 3 players on the list who deserve their pay.

Moving forward - speed, mongrel and foot skills. A key forward who has a little bit of competitive spirit wouldn’t hurt also!

Just going to add, we were terrible but….

It’s 1 game, we allowed 5 goals from defensive half turnovers, in a game where we won contested possession by 20 plus and had 25 more inside 50s.

It was poor, but all this stuff about worst loss in home and away history etc is click bait at best.
We played a team that won the wooden spoon last year, is going to be bottom 4 this year, had close to half a team with less than 50 games and we gave up a 41 point lead and conceded 12 goals to 2 from half way through the second quarter - it was an absolute disaster.

For me it was a collective disappointment from our so called experienced players like Harry, Fogarty, Williams on the forward line (which rendered it useless) and defenders like Haynes and McGovern our star interceptors and ball deliverers.

That play on the boundary line where they’re on the ground tangled up and a Richmond player just picks it up and kicks to a player in the goal square - was comical and embarrassing for two key defenders.
There is a lot of criticism of Harry, too my eye without rewatching the game the ball hardly ever gets kicked to Harry's advantage. I don't know if it's Harry positioning, the defenders positioning or delivery but one thing is for sure and that is I'm not going to re-watch that game

Have calmed down and watched again.

Cripps - solid game. Really noticeable in the third qtr when he had 10 min on the bench and our clearance work fell apart. We then wasted him in the ruck. Cerra, Walsh, Hewitt all didn't do enough.

TDK - solid game. Did a lot right, made some blues and bombed it forward like pretty much every other player.

Forward 50 entries - got enough of them but our forward setup, forwards and entries were all average or very poor. Cant believe how many times senior players Walsh, Saad, Cerra, Tdk, Acres ..and it goes on, just rushed and bombed it forward. Dumb football. 1st qtr short lead ups were forgotten and switch to centre just disappeared.

Weiters - excellent. Totally controlled 1st half and then let down by his backline players.

JSOS - excellent game. Really the only player outside of weiters and cripps that stepped up.

McGovern - seduced by his beautiful kicking skills, and zone breaking ability. Needs to be dropped. He is not entitled to his place in the team. I want to see him earn it and know he has to fight to keep it. At least 2 goals last night came from stupid decision making.

Haynes - it's all been said. As bad as you can play. Effort was there, just not good enough. Cost us at least 2 goals.

Ollie Hollands and Campo - great effort, and plenty to work with. A real mix of OMG bad and really good.

I could go on Saad, Motlop, Cowan all had moments that we very poor.

Mentality - very few players handled the pressure. Our backline repeatedly panicked, and cost us goals. I hope this was 1st game rust, but I'm genuinely not sure. Probably the most worrying aspect of the game.

Coaches -
Planning- forward setup failed.
Ball movement preseason training didn't work. Only 1st qtr was there signs.

Game day - well out coached By Richmond.

Fitness -
Richmond were running much better at the end of the game. We couldn't go with them. Really obvious on our turn overs that we couldn't transition back into defence fast enough. The hawks will destroy us.

Where to from here:

Forwards setup - Charlie is obvious, and will make a huge difference structurally. Fantasia will help link up and entry is available. Thanks Mr Evans. Motlop, we might need to simplify the game for. Has talent but seems clueless.

Stoppage setup - needs a lot of work. Our in game adjustments to different opposition setups is really poor. Walsh and Cerra, and spread more general to be addressed.

Backs - happy to give Caroll a go, and bring Young in for ..Haynes and McGovern.

Loose ball gets and hand ball drills at training. With some scheme that we pluck a pubic hair for every time you bomb it forward into 50 guidelines.

Campo stays.

And breathe.

We had the anomaly of the second half of 2023, but that game last night was as bad as any this century and we have been probably the worst performing team of the century. That game has completed killed any desire I have to watch any AFL.

Looks to me from the above we got slightly beaten around the contest, won it back, only to give it away again with poor disposal and indirection, whereas Richmond were more direct with better disposal.
When forward, we were atrocious and they were the opposite.

That’s the thing with Haynes, he played like a guy trying very hard, but unaware of the team or system around him.

His default was to be the playmaker, rather than block, shepherd , support , connect - almost like he was the only guy back there trying to hold it all together.

He was dislocated & in turn dislocated others.
Yeah, so having SOS and Haynes back with no Newman or to a lesser extent meant the backline was all at sea. Think it'll get better with time together. Just not sure how much.

Some of Saad's decision making was interactive to say the least.

I’ve never seen a guy be Carltonised so quickly and in such a short period of time …

Yep that’s the biggest load of garbage I have seen this club produce in my lifetime and I have seen some s****.

All that excitement for the season just to get the ultimate deflation possible. Literally the worst loss we could have possibly had all season and we get it round 1.

It will take weeks of good football to get the taste of this one out.
