North fans: We have this warchest, we need to target other teams good players, let's bolster the bookends
North: uses its warchest to pry a genuinely good medium defender out of a club with premiership experience

Interesting how mixed the views of this are..

I'm pretty torn on it too, only because of the contract..on the other metrics however it's a good move
Yes no doubt he’s a big need and will probably be the leader of our backline but those figures are above his level.

I'm not a no by any stretch, but we aren't a charity. Yes we need him, yes we need to pay a premium to get him out of Cowingwood, but we don't need to be paying $500k players $1m just so we feel a bit better.

I guess Clarko and Brady would just tell us 'sometimes you need to pay overs'. It's pretty much at the point of 'f it' we need wins and we need em now so going all in

North Melbourne to offer Brayden Maynard $5m+ deal to leave Collingwood

A Victorian rival has launched an audacious bid worth more than $5m to try and lure Brayden Maynard out of Collingwood.

North Melbourne will attempt to blow Collingwood out of the water with a mega $5 – $6 million offer for gun premiership defender Brayden Maynard.
The Herald Sun understands the Roos could be prepared to offer the tough backman a head-turning six-year contract worth as much as $1 million a year to bring him to Arden St.
The Kangaroos have targeted Maynard for his hardness, leadership and team ethic to help compliment their brilliant young midfield group and emerging defensive group.

Maynard, who is an unrestricted free agent, is a beloved figure at Collingwood, but could find the life-changing offer hard to knock back.
Collingwood would be unable to match the size of the blockbuster offer and could receive a first-round draft pick as compensation under free agency rules.

Maynard conceded this week his future was uncertain.

Maynard conceded this week his future was uncertain.

The Magpies do not currently have a first-round draft pick after trading it out last year to land Port Adelaide star half back Dan Houston.

Richmond great Jack Riewoldt said on Fox Footy Maynard would be an excellent acquisition to support and help protect the gun youngsters at North.

“I like it. It is a lot of money and a lot of time (on a contract) for a 28-year-old,” Riewoldt said.

“But if I was to go and pluck a player out to go and have an impact on the field and also defensively behind the ball he would be really important to them.

“But also from a culture perspective, that little bit of grunt, that little bit of blue-collar worker he would be your number one (target).

“You can’t imagine him not in the Collingwood jumper so it is a big decision. He seems like a very loyal character, but six million over six years at 28 years of age is a big carrot.

Two-time North Melbourne premiership great David King said Maynard was a realistic target for North after missing out on some superstar midfielders over the past decade.

“We have got to get used to clubs targeting that next level of player, (because) it is very difficult to getting the absolute top-liner out of a club these days to pry them out,” King said on Fox Footy.

“And you have got to offer them ridiculous money. This is not ridiculous money (for Maynard), as silly as it sounds.

“It is not ridiculous money for a player who can impact like this.”

North has significant salary cap room to bring in more mature talent at season’s end.

The move could also help encourage free agent Luke Davies-Uniacke to stay at North as he weighs up monster offers from rivals including St Kilda.

King said North Melbourne had to be aggressive and strategic.

“He is not a centre-forward type and he is not a tackle-breaking midfielder so there is a risk to it and this (offer) is a bit longer than most.” King said.

“But you have to get used to the clubs now going after the B-plus players not the absolute A-Grader

Happy with the player.

Content with the money.

Not thrilled about the length; but seeing Darling's instant impact I can give it the benefit of the doubt, if structured favourably.
Darling has played one game.

Why don’t you compare it to some of our other ridiculously long contracts that were proven shit?

How embarrassing that we have to offer these dollars to players not to put into contention as the last piece of the puzzle, but to move from a four win team to somewhat competitive….

Club is cooked.

offering their worst player of their back 6 a million is shambolic.

If he’s a million dollar player- hate to know what we were offering Houston
Tell me you don’t watch Collingwood without telling me you don’t watch Collingwood. I would say he is in their top two most valuable defenders. Keeps opponents out of it and plays an important role in their attacks from the back.

And on the character front, there’s a lot of judgement based on not much.

After reading that the details are - of course - loose. Lots of “up to” and “could be”.

100%

5mil over 6 years is about 800k which is about right to get Maynard out of Collinwood imo. Less than 850K.

Piss Rawlings off this guy couldn’t build a bunch of piss heads walking into pub. How this guy has job is beyond a joke. How about developing the kids you have in the same position then getting 29 year old over the hill footballer in 2 years time on a 6 year deal and ppl still support this rubbish. Go get stuffed Rawlings.
Yep, massive fraud.

People lament our lack of defensive edge behind the footy and Maynard is as reliable in the contest as he is with the footy.

The campaigner in him will drive the boys forward, no doubt. Go after him.
I like the mongrel in him and yes will help the defence. I personally don't mind him as a player as he works and puts his head over it. 6 years thats my only?

He must replace LMac if doing this. We don't know if Goater is going to make it with injuries, would love him on a wing and apart from the hard er man and berg er man who we else got?

maybe a straight swap for lmac and dyl bags to make this less $$ 🤔

Offer him $750k over 5 years would suit me.

l dont mind getting him into the club as long as we can improving over the next few years. It would give our younger players more time to develop..

Our last foreign legion got us a premiership in 1975 so why not try the same approach again..
