You can't teach that kick from D'Ambrosio, a lefty with that penetration and direction...

It's called recruiting...

A handball came to him first and then the deft kick...

He has the personal confidence to try it - not that he had any option though.

I would bet London to a brick he doesn't make that kick 8/10 times under the same conditions.

At the ned of the day their drilled structure and player positioning allowed him to have the confidence to 1. kick in that direction and 2. have a player ready to at least make a contest there.

Kudos to the Carlton defensive effort to force a degree of difficulty kick like that should also be acknowledged - whilst at the same time - where was the Carlton cover for the only kcik that was going to be tried - in order to at least halve the contest/mark?

There was another precision kick example from amon I think.....that went to gunston near the boundary line. The kick was so good in that it went to the side that advantaged gunston -we had a player there but kick was too good for our player to impact.

Lots of those examples by Hawks all night and its clear we need better kicks if we are to play the modern game.

Jed Lamb Types would have had Sicily outmarking them at every turn. You needed someone who could compete with Sicily in the air, and Kemp's history as a defender made him the perfect candidate
Can we let our footballers play football.

Too many players are given a task, a negating or mop up role. Defence is essential, but not the sole focus. We are forgetting to create.

First crack - “carlton are one handball short of getting back on winners list”

Something to that effect …

Showed visions of our ball carriers having hand ball options nearby to continue running ball forward but instead we kicked it long to a contested situation
It was good footage.

One takeaway from it to me was that a couple of the clips had Walsh in them which had me wondering, has he just lost some running capacity with his injuries? He was one once upon a time that would run and carry, but these days he's good for being pinged HTB at least once per game and when he finds space he just blind bombs. He just doesn't get the handball receives, run forward of the contest or take the space like he once did.

Hopefully it's just pre-season related, but last yr it was a problem as well. The HTB thing in particular, it's like he's just lost a bit of game pace.

Locking down on Sicily at half back is one of the biggest keys to defeating the Hawks. - someone had to do it and Kemp has all the right attributes and did a pretty decent job.

Yeah Im not sure what the go is with walsh...from memory he's always wanted to receive the ball and be the player that actually kicks it.

We need more from him and others to continue chains of handballs and running to transition more effectively.

Walsh is one of our high profile players - we need him humming along.

He’s lost something that’s for sure. I wonder how his raw running numbers stack up vs pre injury issues when he was almost the best runner in the game. Would will himself from contest to contest and usually at high speed. Anecdotally it feels like he’s getting to less contests now which wouldn’t be a surprise if his back is an issue.

He’s also clearly struggling to get separation like he used to when he got the ball.

We can only hope he rediscovers his best as we’re currently seeing a shell of the guy who came top few in the 2021 Brownlow and best finals player in 2023.

Without knowing, I bet some of his numbers would be very similar. Bet his 2km would line up ok, bet his overall game kms would be in the same ball park. I think his base running capacity is so good he'll never not be a very good runner.

But what perhaps is different is the speed at which he gets from contest to contest, his repeat running at high speed, his running speed with ball in hand etc. It's that part that seems to have deserted him. I bet even without a pre-season he's still in the top handful of distance runners in the comp, but the high intensity stuff is where he's fallen off, imo.

I've also seen it suggested that he put on a couple of KGs in the off-season, which could be part of the reason he looks slower. Maybe he/they just got his body composition wrong and his frame can't handle the extra weight and running loads, leading to the hamstring injury and ultimately another down pre-season. He does look a little thicker to the eye.

I'd like him to look up before kicking the ball

Might be an idea to move Walsh back to a wing, gives him a little more time and space and probably plays more to his strengths. It was early in his career but he was a freak on a wing with his running power
I'm coming around to this theory only because of his body. I'm not sure physically it can take it. Skill wise he was an elite on baller, top 3 in the Brownlow and Finals MVP in that spot, but the other side of that coin is he's getting beat up.

It's a shame but more wing time is probably what he needs now, or just purely outside mid. Centre bounces then outside mid/wing only. Don't want him on the inside anymore, he just can't take it.

You don't need height to use your body to nullify an interceptor

Best way to keep a Sicily at bay is to play through his opponent, who should be on a high lead

Look, I have seen enough of you work on here to know that whatever I say here (other than "OK Arrow you are correct") will not be accepted by you but if Sicily's opponent goes of a high lead (by which I assume you mean lead up between half forward and the wing) the only thing that will happen is Sicily will let them go and mark their kick as it comes into FWD50.

But sure - we probably should have gone with Fogarty.

Walsh was a shadow of his former self last night. Was pedestrian, no intent and jogged a lot behind the contest. Not sure if physical, mental or both but has aged like an inverse Benjamin Button movie on fast forward. Again hope it's temporary.

All these comments...mine included of 'if only kicked straight', 'if only did that like last year', 'when this clicks into gear', 'on a 'insert weather' does really well, when he is available'. Coming to the realisation we are miles off unfortunately.
Funny, the missus and I caught up at local pub for a wine while kids had stuff on after a v busy week. Missus was on the phone to a friend so I was BF browsing. As I was reading Arrows multi thread tome and was thinking of a proper reply, who should roll in for a beer. Motlop, Carrol, Durdin, Williams, Cripps, a few wives, couple of boys I didn't recognise.

The irony of reading a reply from can't remember who replying to Arrows what would you do post, and 5 of the 7 guys in the pub were on his hit list Of trade or move on.
Little fellow got on his bike though, was at home. He got a pic at least. Motlop, lovely kid.

Lovely.

Re Walsh.

When we were at at best in 23, Walsh was that link play in transition and forward of contest mid. Remember when he regularly got coaches votes!

As a team we have reduced our handball forward game and Walsh just isn't the same player. Injuries seem to have really impacted him. Unfortunately, structurally we don't have a like for like replacement and it's hurting the team.

Perhaps we need to a bit creative, push cerra and Walsh more outside, rotating regularly so they dont gas out too quickly, with some minutes for Williams and Ollie. We can then use Lord more inside.

The other thing I noticed on the weekend is we didn't use our wings anywhere near as often as we have in the past. We play quite narrow.

Yep not enough cow bell.

Sorry hand ball.

because they aren't running in well drilled "three's" formations....

1 at the contest
one running to recieve if win contest and cover rear exit if lose contest and
one behind contest to recive if win contest as safety or to defend front exit if lose contest

this is SOP for better teams and Carlton rarely shows this....

Yeah thats the same as I see it. It very much has that look about it

100%.

We rarely have the outside players in the right positions to create a handball chain away from the contest which would at least allow the end player to kick to someone further up the ground who is hopefully running into space.

The one time Saad got it off George and we got a snag is way too rare from this team these days, it's just win the ball off the stoppage and bang it forward.

Voss talks about taking our opportunities in front of goal which is true but it's also about taking those opportunities in general play, making a better decision and executing.

The bang it on the boot has infected the entire team and the coaching staff need to do something about it pronto.
