Player Watch Toby Murray - Re-Signed to End of 2027

Maybe our recruiting team have penciled in Toby as a backup predominately ruck and sometime fwd all along. Kind of the reverse Thilthorpe. Was shocked he had to announce his name as “Toby” to Sid Draper, such is the transformation.

Good resigning, and considering this aligns with a lot of talk of Tex being rested, is Turray about to get a debut?

A bit premature I would have thought. Could have waited till the end of the year, as I dont see anyone lining up to poach him.

Eh, Murray had shown enough in the last year, and in preseason, that he was worth keeping around.

Reckon we are best taking the extra runner against Suns in the heat.

Turray probably best option if Thilthorpe is missing... which hopefully doesn't happen anytime soon.

So do I, how, I wouldn't begrudge Nicks in backing in our ball movement game as the profile is rather fantastic right now (CD labelled it as near-identical to Brisbane).

I would play Curtin in Tex role & pick the extra runner in the hot conditions.

We still stretch them up forward.

He hasn't played a game yet.
I would have waited for a bit longer than a couple of SANFL games.
I'm not saying we wouldn't end up doing the same thing, but there was no hurry.

Why? We have no business going for a KPF in the trade period or draft.

Doesn't matter if there was no hurry or not, there is no reason to not sign Turray whilst it's cheap.

Why do we have no buisness going after a KPF in the draft or trade? We should always be on the hunt for them.

Do you think if we waited until mid way through the season to sign him it would bust our cap or something?
There's no interstate clubs banging down his door to sign him, and Himmelberg had shown more as a back up forward that Murray has yet.

KPF's aren't midfielders (seeing any midfield prospect can be repurposed elsewhere). You don't need to keep hunting once you have a partnership that you can bank on for the better part of the decade. Just the occasional pick keep your depth fresh, which we did last year. We have the partnership for the next decade with Thilthorpe/Fogarty.

Whether it would have busted our cap or not is irrelevant, based on Murray's last year in the SANFL and that he came into this preseason ripped showed that it was the sensible decision to resign him at this point as a 21 year project KPF/ruck.

And if we waited until July would that be the sensible time to sign him?

Obviously he is happy and his manager worked a deal he was happy to sign - I dont think it was that much of a need to get it done now - from our perspective

If we think Turray is a genuine shot at a debut/games, now is a more sensible time than July.

Really this is a complaint for the sake of complaining. This was a deal we needed to do this year (seeing Turray is 1st cab off the rank with our KPF depth moving forward) and seeing it's low salary, better sooner than later.
