I'm at the front of the top tier looking right down on the goal. The ball didn't cross the goal line. It just didn't. I'd love to see some video to prove me wrong.
It was paid a free kick for a push in the back, field umpire over ruled the goal umpire

So a free kick - but they didn't take the kick, the goal was just awarded.

Lions were abysmal tonight. As soon as the biff started I said to my mate this doesn't go in our favour. I felt tonight was going to be a tough game and we got bullied out of it. By Q2 we just started panicking and freezing and the game was done before half time.
The ump paid a free kick to McStay and he kicked a goal while everyone was looking at the melee.

Felt like we should have been ahead at halftime. I thought the umpiring the first half was comical and directly led to about 5 of their first half goals.

On a down week we just didn’t have the juice to grind out the second half and run them down. Had we been neck and neck or ahead at the half we may have still lost but would have been a more entertaining contest.

Yeah we came out angry in the 3rd quarter and just didn't have any legs.

We tried hard enough all night really but our execution was off and we got frustrated at how easily they swept it away after we'd fluffed around for a few kicks.

Just a really off night in terms of energy and execution against a fairly lethal well organised opponent.

Charlie rapidly losing his tricks too..
It’s definitely a concern. He has always relied heavily on his pace to get out the back and beat opponents back towards goal. He’s also decent enough in the air and when he’s on is great with his pressure.

That said, his front and centre craft isn’t elite like Betts or Milne which might mean the end comes a little more quickly if his pace is declining.

I think it’s safe to say now that his real top end speed has gone and at his age it is unlikely to come back. I was hopeful he may have been carrying an injury last year and that was holding him back, but it’s clear at the ground he doesn’t get the same separation on opponents anymore for those cheaper, easier goals. This also would get him up and going and he’d have a bit of confidence then with the set shot, which has gone right now.

We’re missing Kai in this space. He’s overtaken Charlie as our most dangerous small now imo.

Their last goal, Hill ran 25mtrs to score after our defender was put in a headlock during marking contest....embarrassing....
The deplorable umpiring throughout was hidden by a poor showing by our players, so no excuses. Having said that, I've not seen us get so many poor decisions against us for a long time (with umpires who have no idea on distance).

Watching back Bailey's penalty for running too far, it's frustrating he got pinged, but Hill can do the same, or anyone taking a kickout from full back can run pretty much as far as they want these days.

Looked terrific pre-season, but that calf injury appears to have taken the edge right off his game. Fast approaching the edge off the cliff stuff on tonight's viewing.

What I don't understand is that he nailed a couple of drop punts from 40m out in the pocket recently and tonight he reverted to the stupid around the corner from the same distance when he's only nailed one in recent memory and that was from 35m.

Yeah he had one good week there where it looked like it had turned for him again. Was that the Tigers game? Perhaps less perceived pressure due to opposition maybe.

One final thought on tonight. Collingwood looked so structured behind the ball, especially when we entered 50 which at times was far too slow.

Our defence was under siege due to the way the ball was coming in, but I thought to myself a few times on the occasions it was a slower build up by them that (outside of Payne and Andrews) we had some issues.

Starc back will be huge for us, and despite my injury concerns over him, I’m hoping Doedee can come in and help Harris and Lester organise the back 6. His on field leadership might prove to be a big benefit to Harris and Lester down there.

Midfield pantsed.

Oscar was pretty good at the ends of the ground but got a hiding from Cameron in the ruck.

I thought Harris was his usual dependable self and Answerth and Payne were pretty good under a lot of pressure.

We lost the I50 count 37-51. When was the last time we had less than 40 Inside 50's?

We still managed 18 scoring shots so it's hard to be overly critical of the forwards other than butchering a couple of gilt edged opportunities at points of the game that would have at least kept our hopes flickering.

Naicos is a force of nature. His acceleration is astounding, and then he just powers away when in open space.

Umpiring I thought it was awful. They over-umpired the entire match. Ruck frees were pulled seemingly at random and the HTB frees were a lottery, The Pies well and truly got the rub of the green with the frees that really mattered. And then there was the technical 50 against Zac in the first quarter that apparently was 77meters?

Umpiring certainly didn't cost us the game but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be called out for what it was.....shizenhousen!!

He's definitely well down on confidence. You can see it when he has to take a set shot.

I'm not writing him off like some others. It's been a hard adjustment to go from top dog in the forward line to just a cog in the wheel. But he's not really copping the attention he used to so he needs to be a bit better.

One thing I hate is the sook with hands in the air and a look back at the kicker when a pass to him gets misdirected. That's a terrible look.

Pies way to good tonight.
While i was driving home Simon black on the radio said Nick Daicos game the best he has seen from a midfielder.
The Daicos brothers v the Ashcrofts was won easily by the Daicos boys.
As others have said our midfield not up to the task tonight.
I thought the Pies defense cutting off the kick inside from the first bounce is what undid us overall.
That had us going back to the style played years ago when we struggled to kick a score.
When Oscar kicks 2 of the teams 7 goals you know you are in trouble.

Only positives were:
Tunstill had his best game at AFL level
Answerth kept Hill quiet even though Hill kicked 2 late goals one quite difficult.
Marshall looked okay but came on when the game was all over and the heat gone from the contest.
Day has improved with each game.

Crisp post match comments shows how clear their plan was - "teams playing uncontested mark game plan works well with our style, we block off 45 degree corridor kick, force them to kick long, our defense stays connected and work well together to win it back - we then flow off it".. something along these lines.
That was clear - we really couldn't get through their defence or take the corridor for most of the night.
In that regard, it's a good learning for the next hit-up. Between the umpire crackdown on short passes and better teams maybe working us out a bit, we have something to work on.
