Can't see them appealing it. The sentence could be over and done with before the appeal was heard. And he runs the risk of being resentenced with worse conditions.
He doesn't have any right to work . Try losing your license for DUI there are very few exceptions of loss of license regardless of employment status.
He needs to cop it on the chin and move on , he's still getting paid and can train with the club and play VFL when he can't make curfew.
He could have seriously injured or killed that guy. Balta can walk the streets , keep his job and move on with his life.
Things must be different in the Ballarat courts…every second tradie vehicle over here in WA is driving around with E plates on display

Wait for the Richmond fan melts when Steve Hocking tells the CFL that the Geelong Richmond game is to be played at night.

It will be interesting: there's three Marvel games that round, which would suggest to me that one of those (I'd go with St Kilda v Hawthorn) will be Friday night. Brisbane has a home game at the Gabba (against Port) and I feel like those Gabba games are at night more often than not? West Coast is also at home (against GWS), which would be a safe bet for the late game on Sunday.

Probably only room for one other night game on Saturday, with that match being one of a few candidates (including Carlton v Collingwood).

If someone knows a better number, then please share it to help make sense of where this is on the scale - though it seems that around 3% of first time offenders get jail time for assault charges. Obviously this seemed quite severe, though would imagine the threshold for things getting to court is at least some level of severity as well, which would be accounted for when comparing how harsh/lenient his sentence is.

Pathetic weak ruling
No wonder violence is everywhere.
King hit and kept beating him sending to hospital - called high voilence yet fine. All the males around australia now think its not a big deal to king hit someone and send em to hospital. Had an opportunity to make an example and get a message out there.

I noticed he was sentenced to community-based supervision order. Will probably be able to travel interstate at his CCO approval along with curfew variations for employment purposes.

Sentence is about what I expected for a first offence.

Anyone who thinks he should be jailed is just hating. Players from every club commit assault probably annually but are lucky it's not on camera and they're not nailed for it. There's not a single clean club in the country in that sense.

Richmond should just play him in the night games and sub him out at 3QT, drive him home for recovery session.

Hopefully he keeps his socks pulled up here onwards.

Article on the AFL website indicates he would miss the interstate games, which would include the Eagles game, as far as I can gather - I don't see how that would be played after 22 July when the curfew is due to be lifted?

I've also read on the ABC site that Balta's lawyer asked for curfew restrictions to be lifted to allow Balta to play night and interstate games and this was rejected by the magistrate on the grounds that the curfew was implemented as a punitive measure and Balta would have to make changes to his employment to fit the sentence. Essentially "We put the curfew in the sentence specifically to punish him so he'll miss more AFL games."

Andrew Krakouer got 4 years for intent to cause bodily harm and Balta gets no time for causing bodily harm. Wonder what the difference is?

He got 16 months for assault with intent to cause bodily harm, leaving his victim in a coma, iirc.

Actually a quick search indicates it was grievous bodily harm with intent.

Quite a difference.

Sentenced to 4 years with 16 months minimum. Served 32 months.

He was found guilty of assault with intent to cause bodily harm.

A quick google...

Reduced to 32 months although there was a minimum non-parole period of 16m, although we can only speculate why parole wasn't granted earlier.

Balta pled guilty to assault. No intent in the charge, which essentially means it was a crime in the moment, not premeditated, similar to 1st and 2nd degree murder.

Krak got grievous bodily harm (probably due to the victim's coma) with intent ie premeditation. So there's no doubt a prison sentence there because of the intent.

That's about it in a nutshell. Courts look at patterns and what they saw with AK was a bloke who planned to deliberately go and hurt someone vs Balta who appears to have been fed up in the moment with someone's behaviour and gave them a hiding.
