Autopsy Round 9 - St Kilda v Carlton *SPUD'S GAME*

it’s an interesting little note along the road. Carlton fans just hate to admit that their second ruck is Patrick Cripps and St Kilda fans hate to admit that our second ruck is Micthito. How can it be?

Went to the game - not much between the sides but overall they were somewhat better. 2 key forwards were a big threat.

First half was entertaining- second half as dour a struggle as I’ve ever witnessed.

Felt we should have taken the game on more in the second half - who cares if we lose by 30 but give ourselves a better chance to win.

Both sides had some very sore players out there - doubt we will see Howard for a while.

Pou a nice cameo return. Wilson best game this season. Thought our tackle pressure was very good.

Very flat! Probably both sides in the 8 to 10 range. Carlton aren’t great.

Ps insufferable supporters - one bloke behind me gave it to Motlop all night and then when he did anything half decent carried on like he was a superstar. Just an imbecile and he had plenty of mates!

PPS - yep our midfield just isn’t of the necessary quality unless Macrae gets plenty.

Yeah, with Jackal on the Dougal knockers.
He's not back to his best yet, and some people might not rate his best - but what are you gonna do?

He's the best big defender we've got. Hammer can't be expected to quell the top key forwards the game has to offer. He might pull off a good quarter or two but they'll probably get hold of him at some stage. Barret/Barratt hasn't even played enough games for me to remember how to spell his name yet. Mind you, I'm only just getting my head around the number pf p's and l's in Phillipou - and half the people on here will never work out Clark, let alone Caminiti.

Anyway, Dougs is what we've got, so we just have to take the good with the less good and bad.

Great development every game he gets. Definitely keep persisting with full games.
Box has a lot of potential for the future, but unfortunately his inclusion was IMO a decent part of the reason we lost tonight, given he was our 4th mid (11 CBA’s, 5th most had 3) and had just 5 effective disposals, 3 clearances and 2 tackles for the match, didn’t crack 50% game time, and ended up being moved forward.

It’s one thing carrying a Collard in the forward pocket hardly touching it week after week, but you can’t afford to be carrying someone in the midfield against remotely decent teams, or you’re going to be pushing shit uphill.

We need a Clark or Pou back in there ASAP.

Having two teenagers in your midfield who aren’t elite top 5 pick types is at least one too many, if you aren’t in “play the kids mode”. It’s just asking for trouble.

I think we need a complete overhaul of our fitness staff.

Doug was rushed straight back in, last week he was favouring his shoulder and had a hip issue - this week seemed underdone. He's been good since he came back, but he's not 100%.

Higgins, too sick to train, should never play if that illness causes him to be subbed.

King, well, we all know how King has gone since the middle of last year.

Butler, recurrence of the same injuries despite a heap of work preseason.

Henry, is another one in the 'can't get it right' category.

Pou, the guy is class, but clearly not 100% if we aren't rolling him through the middle. The stress fractures was due to overwork

Steele/Marshall, both playing like banged up vets trying to get to round 23, only issue is they've been doing it since round 1.

JC is having recurring soft tissue injuries this year.

So basically, our record of rehabbing players to full fitness really isn't looking great. It's like we have Essendons old fitness guy or something based on these issues.

Edit: of course it's 'this guy' with a photo of one of his many injury free specimens

It’s a big concern I would have thought. Way too many blokes either out injured or playing injured.

.As Ross the Boss said we played with spirit Spud style but we just lacked the execution.
100%

That's the game in a sentence for me

It looked like St Kilda would get blown out. Managed to lock up the game with structure and consistent effort.

A few times in the 2nd half we had a promising forward thrust and blew it with basic kicking skills letting us down.

Carlton got 2 goals from questionable frees and there was 1 or 2 other questionable decisions within forward 50, potentially quite costly when you lose by 15.

Nas was huge, Phillipou made an impact on return.

We had a couple of 18/19 year olds in the middle, including a 2nd gamer, while Carlton had one of the greatest midfielders of this generation in Cripps, and Sam Walsh.

But Saints fought hard and weren't quite skilled enough against a more experienced opponent.

I've noticed this too. I don't want to be too negative, but i've seen him choose to soccer so many times when a player is running towards him. I've always seen him as a winger anyway, not every player has to progress into the centre bounces.
I think it was the 2nd quarter. He literally jumped out of the way to avoid a collision and left an avenue open out of the stopage. I've hardly ever seen anything like that at this level.

I have a suspicion that Mitch will end up a very influential player in AFL.

Carlton getting questionable frees within the forward 50. Surely not?

I personally reckon the suggestion that Wilson will end up in the middle is fanciful, there’s not one thing about his game that screams “inside mid” to me, but he was so far off our worst tonight it’s not worth mentioning.

5th most disposals on the ground
2nd most metres gained
=7th most ranking points
6th most pressure acts
=7th most marks, score involvements and inside 50’s

And he played 89% of the game, covered a whopping 16.4km, and 4.3km at high speed (the 2nd most anyone has done in a game this year- he now has all of the top 4, and 5 of the top 6, and he’s the only one to have cracked 4km).

Surprisingly he had more contested possessions than Garcia in that game but still not many.
Owens had a few.
To me its Owens , Windhager, and Phillipou who have the potential to win contested possession.

Last week MacRae had 25 contested possessions, no-one had more than 9 against Carlton.
( Sinclair, Owens , Mackrae ).
Steele , Phillipou and Marshall on 7.

Yeah nah, I don't think it's rubbish.

There's plenty of time during the week for the emotional videos and stories. They can play videos earlier in the night before the warmup, or at half time when the players are in the rooms. They can still circle up and do a bit of a speech.

I don't see many, if any, people blaming it for the loss or saying Spud's game shouldn't happen. Doesn't mean we all have to think it's the best way of going about it. I'd personally involve the current players less, and let them focus on the game. There are plenty of past players they could have out there pregame for the ceremony. It's a great chance to promote the DFC and the work that goes on there. They could give a report on how that's going.

Even the media were asking Ross about that in the presser, so it's not just Saints fans who are questioning the way it's done.
im just saying i dont think it impacted our performance, and frankly if anything we need more exposure to games where we have a public expectation to perform, not less

i wasn't there and didn't watch any of the pregame so it didn't affect me one iota

well his ability to get from contest to contest if he played a roaming mid role would be huge, he would rack them up. His turnover rate/clearances/tackles etc probably wouldn't be too great, but his ability to outnumber at contests is huge. Right now he's in the play only really when the ball is on his side of the ground (im guessing i dont really know his patterns, but you'd assume as much).

Howard doesn't have a tank at all and i'd say Harry McKay beat him convincingly. He genuinely has no fitness whatsoever from what I saw at the ground. Darcy Wilson has the Tim Membrey's where he takes too long to think of what he is going to do. Steele and Sinclair did alright, so did Byrnes, otherwise he was just a frustrating game to watch.
I don't think you can have two of Hill and Byrnes in the team, if there's no running game they don't add a lot. As already stated Hill looked like he lost his talent from the monstars from Space Jam.

I reckon Howard’s hip was still sore. Moved like a snail and Mc Kay was running off him with zero resistance

It's never that good after a win and it's never thar bad after a loss.

Give the boys a day off tomorrow then hit the tackling bags Sunday.

Make it a 7am start to see who is committed, sleep in at your peril.

Can't be too tough on the forwards or backs when the midfield is uncompetitive again. Seems like we need Cray to have 35 and 10 clearances for us to have a chance. Steele was okay by his standards but those are GOP standards. Garcia and Boxshall were invisible. Hill absolutely terrible. Wilson poor with the ball. Windy poor. Credit to Byrnes - I'm not a fan at all but he was very good

Mason would have been huge for us, he could have really helped with that terrible stagnant ball movement. Owens to the middle could have given us something but we stuck with what wasn't working. Would still like to play Caminiti back to allow Wilkie to float off the third forward. Moose forward/ruck

Great to see Pou back. He actually presented as the strongest tall forward target we had all night, but I want to see him start splitting him time in the middle starting next.

No more small forwards as sub. Need someone who can impact the contest

Do we need to note that we didn't get the job done after a full 7 days without any interstate travel?

Can we put that bullshit excuse to beddy-byes now?
