I think someone mentioned we generally have between 6-8 changes on the list. Will be interesting, I do think some older players will retire/finish up, just a matter of how many.
I thought the staggering was gonna happen last year, I definitely think it'll start this year.
Cox/Mitchell most likely.
Anymore we'll see.

Also, if we take 2 players in MSD more than 6 months, then they will go onto the rookie list end of the year so prob would then need to move on a couple others.
If we win the flag there could be more.

I thought Howe was very likely to retire but now I’m not sure. Cox, WHE, Markov, Mitchell are the older ones I think will be going
Howe doesn't fly quite as high as he used to, but he hasn't lost his ability to read the flight of the ball.

Very possible some pull the pin if we win the flag.
If we win this year, then I reckon Pendles, Steele and Howe will retire.

that would screw us over depth wise and screw Pendles of a massive AFL record, cant see Pendles retiring unless he has a dramatic form slump

Those 3 guys are more likely to stay even if we don't win the flag. I reckon they'd like one more shot at redemption. They are competitive beasts. However, anything is possible if we win the flag

I would like to find out

I would be surprised about the former two. Pendles doesn't give any indication of being interested in retiring, and Sidebottom loves it. Howe I could, chiefly because his body is a bit more battered than the other two

Tasmania should offer him millions for an onfield coaching role for 2 years
Imagine all those talented young players having Pendles right there giving you immediate tips and feedback

* I don’t want Pendles to go - just what I would do if running Tas

Anything is possible of course, but the end of that contract is a minimum 83 matches away which could get to 90 if we have a good couple of years before he joins the Devils. He would end the second season 3 months shy of his 42nd birthday. For a one year at a time guy that’s a long way away.

True - lost my senses, was thinking after 2025...and they don't come into the comp for years

Would be pretty hilarious if 500-gamer Pendles was wheeled out by Tassie on $2m a year.

Not sure why so many are keen to push an early 30s former Brownlow medalist who was 2nd BOG for us in the 2023 GF out the door so soon. At least let him show what he has got left in the tank.

Push the over-loved spuds like AJ and MaCrae out first. Then the surplus depth like Markov. Coxy is likely to retire. Speaking of MaCraes, how much better would we look with Jack instead of Fin?

There is no doubt Fin and AJ will be out, of all players on our list they are the two most likely to be gone imo

Using the word spuds was a daring choice. You're going to have potatoes thrown at you all day for that. Jack would've been a great pick up for us

I’d say it’s because AJ and Finn are so obviously not up to it and it’s been obvious for a while now, they aren’t worth talking about

I wonder if St.kilda would rookie fin ?.
I wouldn’t think so.

Also, for those discussing the likely exits this year… I think all of them are a chance if they’ve had enough but it sounds like they’ve mostly gone on record saying they’ve been begging Fly for another contract (Mihocek, Elliott) or that their plan was always to play as long as they could contribute (Sidey, Pendles).

I don’t see Mitchell retiring, assuming he isn’t about to have another setback with his foot. Could imagine that would ruin him mentally.

WHE I think we’d be happy enough to keep due to versatility and presumably low cost.

Cox again, low cost, effective ruck and forward backup. It would require Steene coming on strongly to finish the year for us to retire Cox, imo.

I think AJ, Macrae, Smit/Steene, Markov, Dean and one retirement (couldn’t say who yet) will be our changes.

Wouldn’t surprise to see someone like Ryan, Parker, Sullivan or Allan request a trade to a club offering better playing opportunities, also.

The thing is..
Most older players don't get a choice. Its rare that players go out on their own terms. I don't imagine there wouldn't be too many that wouldn't want to keep playing, but clubs tend to tap players on the shoulder.

If we take 2 in the MSD, thats two more to go on the rookie list, in replace of lets say for Markov/Johnson.
Fin is on the senior list. Thats one
They won't want to lose Steene given his now progression, unless someone comes and poaches him for more opportunity.
You'd then need to open up a few more senior spots. I just think its evitable that we're gonna have some 30+ players end up, just a matter of how many. Could be 1-2. Could be 3 for all we know.

Honestly rekon retirements will be:
  • 2024: Mitchell, Cox
  • 2025: Pendlebury, Howe

I think we have to keep will hoskin Elliott around because of his versatility and no apparent signs of slowing down.

Did we go back to 2024?

This would explain Cox's poor form

You are a year behind but get what you mean :).

Unless Steene comes on, loosing cox would leave us exposed in the ruck. I can see a situation where the Club would want to extend Cox another year.

If Mitchell gets back to something like his best, then this gets awfully (in a good way) interesting.
