The schedule re-jig set to accomodate Suns v Bombers clash
The AFL is still finalising its fixture for the second part of the season

Done properly, which won't be the case, it would take 5 weeks to accommodate the game without harming the fixture:

Essendon and Gold Coast would play five consecutive games with 5-day rests. It would be 6 games in 5 weeks.

It begins in a Friday. Then, they would play on Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday, and Monday. In the fifth week, they would be back to the regular schedule with Sunday games.

There would be three games in unusual days, but that's the price to be paid in order to avoid screwing up all the other clubs.

Their match against each other would be the Wednesday one.

Seems completely unnecessary to do as the OP is proposing when a simple Thursday fixture in round 24 - followed by a Wednesday game after that leaving both teams with a reduced break but still a decent period off.

5 consecutive games of 5 day breaks is ridiculous and would be a monumental disadvantage.

Keeping in mind its not like its either of Gold Coast's or Essendon's fault that a cyclone occurred and our byes didn't match up.

Lol. 5 consecutive 5 day breaks is the dumbest "solution" of all time

Did hear correctly that they're ditching Thursday night footy in rounds 23 and 24 in favour of AFLW?

If this is correct, then Essendon and Gold Coast can't play Thursday night footy in round 24 and will be forced to play this make up Wednesday night game on a 5 or even 4 day break.

It may not be ideal, but it should work fine. Bombers and Suns should play the Wednesday match so you can adjust the other days for the opposing teams.

There would be only one issue: teams playing against them on the Tuesday would have a 4-Day break after that. They would play again on the next Sunday. However, prior to it, they would have had at least an 8-day break. So, there's a trade-off.

The game will most probably have Finals implications. It should be avoided playing it after Round 24 — which is what probably going to happen.

there could be a contingency situation where their ladder positions are conveniently fairly secure anyway and they together prefer to cop the 2 points rather than play.

The Adelaide v Geelong match in the immediate wake of Phil Walsh was cancelled outright with two points each, rather than delay/postpone. They were already fixtured to meet in the final round which could’ve been a factor.

I’d hate to see the Suns first final (or Bombers latest shot at winning one) curtailed by tight scheduling.

Why

Alternatively, at some point around rounds 20 and 22, the AFL could schedule Suns-Bombers as a stand-alone game for the weekend. The remaining rounds would be postponed, and the pre-Finals bye, scrapped.

That didn't answer my question

It wasn’t answering. I wrote it before you asked, but you haven’t read it.

The situation is sh*t. There’s no good solution. They are all bad.

In my view, those 5 short breaks, as tiresome as they may be, are still the best way to accommodate the postponed match. This dilutes the weight of the extra match, distributing it through several rounds.

The second best solution would be the alternative I’ve posted above.

We talk about breaks being such a big deal. A week and a half for suns/bombers and 2 weeks for everyone else heading into finals. Is it really that big a deal? Still a long break before finals either way.

If breaks are such a big deal why isn’t Collingwood’s fixture being more scrutinised? Only once all year do they get a shorter break than their opposition. That was against Freo last week.
Every other week they get a longer rest than their opposition.

It was known/ highly likely the game was going to be called off. Make a snap decision AFL and bring the game to Victoria. Marvel was empty.
Given the damage and potential damage to lives and property, specially down the coast, it would have been completely unacceptable to demand players and staff go away for the weekend, and possibly not be able to get flights back during the week.

Other Queensland (rugby league) teams travelled that week.
