NGA's shouldn't.

Father/son and Northern Academies should

GC have another good year this year, but the cupboard is very bare in their academy for the next 3 years.
I'd just leave Father son's as is and that's about it. NGA's the blight on the system.

As someone who lives in a Northern state, and has an interest in the game locally, but don't barrack for a 'northern' club I can assure you that they are an essential thing that are bringing more talent to the game.

The Suns will have 2 good drafts out of 10 being 2023 and 2025. Annable will be the Lions first ever genuine coup from it.

If they get massive draft hauls on a regular basis year in year, then its worth looking at. At the moment, these are mere anomalies.

Dylan Patterson and his ties to Rugby League is a prime example of its success. Same for Heeney in Sydney.

The only thing I would agree with, is that if a player has F/S ties to a club - then they should not be eligible for academy rights as well. It's an absurd notion that the son of a 100+ game AFL footballer was drawn to the game by an academy.

Suns 2024 draft also very good for it, its been 3 strong years in a row

Just have to make it full price for bid spot and that also a pick needs to be in that round to be able to match, along with other things like finishing position, the amount of open pick spot allocations. 36 spots should be the number we were to, delist to 31 on primary, have 5 picks of value ect

There is also still that world where you keep these programs but it doesnt favour one side

Isn't Andrews from Lions academy?

They need to pay fair price. That’s what’s wrong with the system. Gold Coast have another three first rounders this year because they can keep moving the pick into next year and match the bids with junk.

The new system you can't it's at least of a lesser scale. I agree the matching with junk was a disgrace. My fellow supporters hate me saying this but I will again- the ability to match is the discount for goodness sakes can we stop the discount on top of the thing and that's across all of them NGA, F/S, academy whatever. If a guy is worth pick 1 you pay 3000 points not 2400 with the discount. That is where the issue has come in.

Least the points stop in the 3rd round and not 4th like it was this year. Let's see how it works, knowing the AFL there will be a club (probably mine as we know how to be sneaky the Blakey bid shenanigans was hilarious) who knows how to get around it

Agree, they should have to pay fair price and if 3-4 good ones come along in one year - they should have to manouvre to get the picks required.

Isn't Andrews from Lions academy?

Picked in the 60's without any bids on him.

Yep. Also Hipwood and Kiddie Coleman.

Coleman was overlooked completely in his draft year

Hipwood was taken with the Lions 2nd pick when they had just finished 15 and 17th in the previous 2 seasons and were a basket case.

They have tweaked it to make them pay more, but still might need more tweaking - this years draft will be a good test of these new rules and tweaks.

I prefer a system where you should just have to match a bid with your next pick. (and you can't cynically trade awya your early picks knowing what is coming)

If you have 4 academy kids that are considered first rounders, you need to go and accumulate 4 x first round picks, or at the very least 2 first rounders and 2 early 2nd rounders.

It also means those bidding on players have to be prepared to actually take them
