Free kick count was 20 Maggie's 29 Dees.

That's a 45% advantage to Melbourne.....
Seems the 50 to Daicos, which was 100% there every game this season, is worth 20 free kicks?
It was the other way around, Pies 29 Dees 20.

That was a tough watch. Rapt to get the win. Howe BOG for me, Steele next then Josh. Many of the team were uncharacteristically fumbly at ground level and it hurt our ball movement.

Beau has always been fumbly but effective so no surprised there

I blame Goodwin and the umpires more than Langdon for that blatant cheating in holding Nick.
Langdon would have been told by a**hole Goodwin to hold onto Nick for dear life if you want a game next week. Langdon didn't do anything underhand...he blatantly and obviously held onto Nick. The umpire just didn't call it. So why would Langdon stop if the umpires were greenlighting it?

I reckon that performance was all duck no dinner.
Why does he look like a ****ing Ditto transformed into a person?

Agree 100%. The umpires could’ve and should’ve paid an early one and that would’ve put paid to it immediately.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Melbourne had sought out feedback from the umpiring department during the week exactly what would and wouldn’t be permissible. Felt early like the umpires were shit scared to pay a free to N Daicos.

Will admit aside from the umpiring for him particularly we enjoyed a pretty good ride though.

At the end of the day Nick kicked a goal and had an extra 15 disposals than his direct opponent whilst Melbournes best outside runner had 4 disposals for the game so I’m not too worried about Nick being tagged if this is the outcome.

I know we won but when there were 30 seconds left and when Pendles was killing the clock why did Sidey kick it into a contest where Gawn was, knowing full well Gawn had been marking everything coming his way. Are we tempting fate? It could've ended up so badly if Gawn had been able to find another mark instead of that butchered kick. Couldn't Steele found another easy mark sideways or backwards just to take a few more seconds off rather than kicking long to that contest? I'm confused

he rightly assumed someone could spoil over the top and kill the contest just bad luck that the kick went straight to Max

Darcy Moore frustrates the hell out of me because one he clunks one or 2 intercept marks you think great he's turning the corner and is going to be his old self soon then he becomes this panicky spoil-happy mess that costs goals i'm sure he's as dissapointed as we are with his form but its just borderline unacceptable from your skipper now
Moore was atrocious today.

It's not KB, it's now know as Neale's Day.

Again, a massive number of vacant seats at the Ponsford stand level 1. Weather makes it easy for Pies fans to stay away as they have nothing invested in the day.

This day would mean something for

Ground level or up 1 level?
Ground level was busy with Pies.
Level up was Dees members as it was their home game. That’s my usual home seating area.

They will have manned up so Steele kicked to the safest place - deep in the forward pocket. A kick away from Gawn would have been more dangerous.

This day would mean something for Essendon and Melbourne.
I was in level 1 Ponsford Stand. It was packed with Pies supporters.

Why would Pie supporters stay away? It's a home & away match for 4 points. Why wouldn't we be as invested as we are for any other match?

Over 20,000 empty seats for a sellout was very disappointing, looked to be Melbourne members areas and MCC. Was also a few empty seats around us in AFL members and yet not a drop of rain all day. Too many fair weather supporters. Btw not a crack at some of our fine posters holed up with flu, hope you feel better soon.

Onto the game and what a boring, shit spectacle. Melbourne dragged us down to their level and nearly beat us. Maybe it’s the upcoming bye and we can write it off, but that’s was nothing like what we’ve been playing and only Melbournes arrogance and shit kicking got us over the line.

Players might get a break, but Fly might be busy studying and hoping opposition teams can’t gain too much from that effort. We played perfectly into Melbourne’s hands and as many of us pointed out pregame, Melbourne is not a team you can beat by going small, especially if you’re going to kick it long to their marking players.

They basically took Collingwood’s own rebounding game plan and did it better.

Fly's presser

An important day and an important win. What did you make of the performance?
"It's a great win, it really is. The occasion's a big one. Actually, before the game that was a moment. I was lucky enough to be here when EJ Whitten did his final lap. I'll never forget where I was when I saw that, and today I'll never forget where I was when I saw Neale [Daniher] do his lap of honour. What an incredible human being. The game itself was scrappy, it was winter footy. I think he would have somewhat be happy with the game, with the result".
Melbourne threw the kitchen sink at you, particularly in the second quarter. You must be happy with how you stood up?
"I thought they were enormous. They played so well and they're probably thinking they let one slip because all the numbers suggest they dominated phases of the game, particularly in the contest. I thought their contest was enormous. We found a way to win. We did and that's what we're doing at the moment. We're in this phase of qualifying. There's no other thing we're doing right now. There's no bigger outcome than just getting enough wins to play finals and we're all in the same thing. Today was a really good result because the opposition were very good".
How important was your backline, particularly in the second quarter when Melbourne were coming hard?
"I think both backlines were enormous. I said at half time if the numbers keep going like they will, there's concern there and we just we steered the ship a little bit in the third quarter and got 20 points up. They'd argue their backline was just as good, I think May and these guys, Lever, are really hard to play against. Bowey is having a great season, he's probably one of the most improved players in the competition".
You're used to seeing Nick Daicos step up on the competition, but to see Josh Daicos take ownership of the game must have been pretty special?
"If one Daicos doesn't get you, the second one will. It's a nice duo isn't it? Josh has had an enormous year. He starts on the bench and comes on and he just looked like a different player to everyone else on the ground when he came on. Everyone was second taking the ball and fumbling, but not Josh. I'm really happy for him. He's worked really hard on his game, he's never played backline before and he's working really hard to be the best player he can be. Right now everyone's seeing that".
What did you make of Ed Langdon's tagging role on Nick Daicos?
"He did a great job, a really good job. Again, there's just trying to take things away from the opposition. I said before the game, that's what makes this competition so difficult. You want to do things and today they took things away from us and they did it really well, but that's what you're trying to do to the opposition too. Every week you're trying to exploit them or manage certain situations. I thought Nick was well handled today. They did a great job on him and Nick fought through it, but Langdon would've had the honours I would have thought".
You've spoken before about Nick's response and him being unselfish in handling tags and the way your players respond and protect Nick. How did you see the response from your players?
"I think it's sort of a nil-all draw in terms of the way we looked after him. I thought there were times when we could've done a few things different, but it's a different game right now. I said at the start of the year that you've got summer. We played a summer sport for a better part of 4 to 6 weeks. It was bloody hot up in Sydney and the start of the season, so the game is a bit more free flowing. We missed autumn, and went straight from summer to winter. It's bloody cold around the country right now and you watch most games over the weekend; they were pretty dour and it's a different game. You got to be able to step into that and today we stepped into it. You just have to embrace that period. I don't know how long this is going to last, 4 to 6 weeks normally. Find a different way to win and sometimes the numbers don't always equate to winning but today we did enough to win".
You got a handy lead at the top of the table. You'd be celebrating that, but also reminding the players that there's a job to be done and there's a long way to go?
"We're just qualifying. Until you get 14 wins you can't make finals and we're on 11 [wins] or something like that. We're still not there. Everybody is trying to do the same things and this is the challenge because some teams are now looking a little bit further than what they need to because they're going 'oh, we're got to get moving because we can't slip up'. We were there last year, we were fighting for everything and Melbourne were fighting really hard today because it becomes a point where you have to make everything count. We're just qualifying right now".
