Funny. I don’t see it being mentioned in the media but we defended for 10 minutes from the McStay goal to the end of the game

They talked up how we defended for 7 minutes in the 23 Qualifying Final. Today was 10.

Unreal effort.

Although it wasn't quite the same in terms of Melbourne just attacking relentlessly for those 10 minutes.

It was a Melbourne home game. Hence the slightly lower than hoped for crowd.

Did you go to the game?

I did. And I was bloody proud to wear the Big Freeze beanie and to be a part of such great cause.

It beggars belief to read that people think we should walk away from this day.
The club would be mad to walk away from a marquee slot.

It’s a marquee fixture. The commercial benefits of playing in such a fixture can’t be understated enough.

Assuming we walked away from it, what fills the void instead? The only realistic prospect I can think of is replacing Essendon with us on KB and we fill the KB Eve slot with Carlton.

Otherwise, the key marquee slots are locked in now whether it be the opener with Carlton-Richmond, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Eve, Anzac Day etc.

Agreed.

If we're not playing Melbourne on the Monday of the King's Birthday round then we risk being sent off to Cairns or Canberra or Bunbury or Alice or whatever other exotic location they feel like sending their prime media generating club to in order to prop some other club up with a bit of media exposure (and a bigger crowd).

So much fumbling, slipping over, simple handballs to teammates a few metres away going astray.

Bombing long into our 50, or even down the line to have a Demons defender intercept.

Was just a day of poor footy by us. Demons brought the heat as well with their pressure being such an important game for them.

We’ll beat them by 50 points in the return fixture in round 24.

They got the matchups right today and nearly got us.
Their smallish quicker forward line caused issues, Melksham on Moore wasn’t great, Fritsch slipped out at times as did Pickett.
Maybe we missed Maynard, not sure.
Our forwards were beaten also.
Aerially outplayed all day.
Mihocek struggled, seemed hampered.
Elliott wasn’t great, quiet, McStay also bar 2 goals. Membrey competed pretty well.
Nick shadowed all day and the newbies in Allan and Hayes a little off pace.
Cool heads in Josh, Pendles, Howe and Houston got us over the line.
Melbourne are fairly physical and mature always make it a grind.
I think Shultz, Maynard, a fit DeGoey and even Cox will all be considered next time.
Like the conditions, we seemed a bit bogged. Enjoy the break.
I also will I think…

Good sides win ugly, and we're a very good side who had to win ugly. We were beaten in most areas of the game, our best player was somewhat subdued (the tatics used there needs to be questioned by the club to the AFL), we looked way off our game with a forward line and midfield that struggled all day, yet we take the 4 points, against an opposition who probably played their best footy.
Not much can be said about this game, other than we are fortunate to have Howe in our Defensive back 6, and Pendles with Sidey in our midfield. These three, with their leadership got us over the line. It's unbelievable the level of footy they're playing!!
I thought IQ was terrific all day, Jaicos is slowly becoming the best Daicos this season, Long was very good, except for that bit of play when he had a clear run inside F50 with the ball, and lost his compsure and shanked the kick, but he will get better in those situations. Houston stood up when required, l thought Cameron got better, particularly around the ground, as the game went on and it was good to see McStay kick a couple of goals in his return, particularly that huge contested mark in the last quarter to get us back in front.
l love the look of Hayes as a potentially very good senior AFL player, but l really think he's about 2 pre-seasons premature in terms of playing at the top level, but it was brilliant to see him kick his first goal.
If l was to summarise this match, l would say, "it's a grind this time of the season, and its difficult to always be on top of your game week after week, with the players also feeling a bit sore and in need of a break. I thought in this game, it showed".
We've had a huge first half of the season, and the players have been absolutely brilliant putting us in such a strong position to potentially finish top 2, no doubt top 4. As members and supporters we should be hugely proud of their performance so far this season.
I feel the season is falling into place perfectly for us. We have a bye now at the most perfect time, when the players need it, also giving time to those on the sidelines to get some work in, and be back shortly after the bye eg. Maynard....
I think we all need a break at this point of the season, freshen up and continue to ride the wave of this fantastic season after the bye!!.....GO PIES!!

How’s some media saying Nick Daicos’ behind from his free kick was the difference. Hoskin-Elliot was 40m out directly in front with 20 seconds to go. You don’t think he would have slotted it through rather than passing it to Bobby 60m out near the boundary?

Do these guys actually watch the footy?

May doesn’t have a brain in his head. Fancy doing that in that moment to a guy who has carried your club for years.

Contrast this to the boys getting around Crisp when he missed the winning goals against the Cats.

Thats why Melbourne Football Club is just a really shiit club, made up with shiit people.

Dees played well. Blocked up the corridor all game making our overlap run game unplayable. Pushed back hard into defensive 50 to make it hard to hit up free forwards. Smashed us in centre clearances and contested ball. Had more inside 50’s than us but thankfully their forward line is poor. We took our chances and defended well but wouldn’t want to take that form into the next round.

They also don’t make it easy for their forward line booting it in there without a plan.

Any club doing that will have 10 additional inside 50s.

Melbourne played well. Their players pushed back hard to take away any space in our F50 forcing us to bomb it long. It's also why they struggled to score on a rebound as they often had all 18 players in their bach half of the ground.

The ground was in horrible condition. Two days of rain in Melbourne - the first real rain we've had all year and the ground became muddy. Not good at all.

Without sounding arrogant, Collingwood add significantly to bringing attention to the most important aspect of the Day, MND research, we bring the crowds, people tune in, I’m not sure Essendon bring it to the same level.

If it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it.

At the end of the day Nick kicked a goal and had an extra 15 disposals than his direct opponent whilst Melbournes best outside runner had 4 disposals for the game so I’m not too worried about Nick being tagged if this is the outcome.
The AFL should be. Allowing one of the games greatest players to be reduced to that is a travesty. Sure Nick is so good he can get around it to an extent but he shouldn't have to.

Totally agree. The AFL is all about creating a great spectacle. Allowing the illegal holding and impeding a player from playing the ball is against the rules.

The media praise Langdon on his work, regardless of how illegal it was.

Gary Lyon this morning thought Langdon did a terrific job and when Watson probed how a defender can’t get away with impeding or holding on to a forward loosely, like a midfield tagger can, Lyon played dumb.

The umpires failed in not paying Nick free kicks from the start. Now, we have commentary on how he was umpired differently in the 2nd half. He shouldn’t have been umpired differently if he was umpired correctly from the beginning.
