So you think his unhappiness is justified but also want to keep an unhappy player because he’s a good leader, which he isn’t.

Dambrosio and Voss were demonstrated la unhappy with the clubs culture and were largely let go because of that.

Both are thriving in better environments. Being unhappy doesn’t always make you the problem especially if the environment is problematic.

There’s lots of different ways to lead. I think he’s been good there especially in the VFL.

What?
Voss was let go because he was a party boy and unprofessional
Massimo wasn’t let go, was offered a contract. He left for a better deal and opportunity.

I didn’t know about Voss partying.

It’s worth noting that Mass lack of opportunities came while Hepp, and Jake Kelly were playing huge minutes.

He deserved to be playing

my point was that sometimes players being unhappy with their role is justified.
Of course players who aren’t in the 22 are always unhappy, it’s the way footy is. But why would you want to keep a guy in his 30s who doesn’t offer what we need, sooks up because he’s not playing the role he wants to and isn’t a good leader. Let him walk, I doubt anyone even takes him at this point.

Can Langford replace Gunston? Is that worth a 1st from Hawthorne?
Can Ridley (try to) replace a Stewart? What's that worth to Geelong?
Yes but I also don't want to trade him to Hawthorne.

Hi everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Are there any of our senior core of players who the club are actually looking to move on from? Or would it just be speculation/thoughts of who we should move on from?

Given the past extensions of players like Jones, Menzie etc, I don’t have a great deal of hope the club will be ruthless for once and make those decisions that could make us far better in the long run and prevent the youth from picking up the bad habits of senior players.

My observations include no behind the scenes knowledge. I don’t know how he is behind the scenes.

Based solely on watching him play some afl and some vfl I think his time in the VFL has helped him mature and become a good teammate. I also think much of his unhappiness is justifiable.
One of the biggest issues he has had has been playing his own game in periods every season. Justifiable or not him being seen as a leader is one of our problems. There has been times where he has just collected a pay check. He may have been sold a dud by us but it is time to move on.

Voss was also not the best at following the game plan and often ran around doing his own thing. He was a rookie with no contract so he got cut. The info I heard was his manager got him the summer training spot with Fremantle and basically told him this is it. If you **** this one up you will be back kicking a footy around in Wagga. His lack of application was the reason that GWS did not go forward with him either.
Good luck to him. He has worked hard and is a better player than I ever thought he would be but his lack of chances with us where self inflicted.

As for Mass. It was not even the lack of opportunity. Yes the Hawks offered him a chance to play wing / half forward and not half back but it was more the low ball one year offer that made the difference. In the end we offered around the same money and two years but his mind was already made up. Scott wanted to keep him on the list. The list management side of things got ****ed up. If we offered him two years with a pay increase when we put the 1 year deal on the table he would most likely have taken it.

Solid first post. Welcome.
I agree that we should be looking to extricate ourselves from connection with some players who have been there for a long time.
I also agree that we will be too gutless to do it.
The recent history tells us all that we need to know.
Hence, Essington!

would be very surprised if shiel doesnt request a trade. Could easily see him being valuable in a premiership contending side

Appreciate the reply Squeaky, as much as I would love for us to take a more Hawthorn-esque approach and gut a fair chunk of our senior listed players, I do understand that there is a fine line between cutting too deep and falling into NM territory and keeping them on for too long on the list.

As much as I watch our games and bemoan Redman for his lack of defensive awareness/IQ or McGrath for coughing it up every time he runs out of defence and kicks it to an oppo player or provides one of our players with a hospital pass, I understand the thought that they’re better off learning from these two ‘leaders’ than just filling the backline with inexperienced defenders who would just be scratching their heads when the opposition team seemingly has a gameplan and has cues to their forward structure.

Now those two are far from the type of ‘leaders’ you want your young players learning from but its sadly all we have at the moment.

Parish on the other hand, I would love to trade him out. The game has gone past the accumulating type mids to mids who can run and spread and can actually damage with their disposals (ie Holmes and Baz). I’ll admit, as many here probably were, I was in awe of his 2021 AA season, but his deficiencies quickly became evident and now his supporters tend to just look at stats post game and assume he had a good game because he got a lot of disposals.

With his clearances (I was watching him closely in the Carlton game), he would see ball and play hot potato or just hack kick it in the air to a losing aerial battle or the opponent and they would start their attack from that error.

i wouldn't be in a rush to trade Ridley - guy is SO important

BUT, if he is injured again than what can you do? His body just doesn't seem to be up to it
We should be targeting his replacement in this years draft after Josh Lindsay imo

I think my positive opinion of Sheil is more driven by the fact that I wish more Essendon players would be professional enough just to do their job competently and collect a pay check.

I think that’s a higher professional standard then what’s there.

I’m happy to clear out dud senior players who don’t play the right way or who might be holding young players back and or have decent value ie McKay, Redman, McGrath, parish, Gresham and one of Draper/Wright maybe Caldwell or Nick Bryan if we could get enough for them

I’d be equally surprised if someone takes him. Even for free

West Coast resigned Tim Kelly until 2027.

Tim Kelly who got 12 possessions against all 3 of North, St Kilda and Richmond in his last 5 games.

Shiel would shit over his output next year.

West Coast are on the bottom though aren't they? The sooner we're rid of him, Parish & McGrath the better

I'm referring to how the poster I quoted said no one would take Shiel, West Coasts list is absolutely shit and they or StKilda would be silly to ignore him considering it's a free hit.

Of course Shiel is gone from us, he's out of contract.

Parish and McGrath are a lot harder because of the length of their contracts plus the injury issues Parish has had (which Ridley and Langford are sharing)

Shiel is 33 in March, I have doubts he’ll be much more effective than Kelly next year. I reckon there’s many mature age mids you could take that would be a better option than Shiel.

And bottom of the ladder teams should be focusing on youth. I see no value for any team in taking him.
