Maybe the pitch was flat, but I’d say that an attack with Hoggard, Harmison, Flintoff and Simon Jones is better than whatever potatoes Zimbabwe are rolling out there. Also, Lara was one of the greats of his generation and the previous record holders, from Bradman to Sobers to Hayden, were all elite batsmen. Mulder averages 36 with the bat; he probably didn’t want the pressure of zooming past a number of the game’s greatest players against a hapless bowling unit.
