If Jack gets Premiership #4 this year, where does that place him in great players in the history of the club?

The guy has turned back the clock this season, filling what looked to be a gaping hole in our forward line.

His contributions throughout our threepeat were massive.

4 goals in the prelim win against Geelong, then followed it up with unluckily missing out on a norm smith the following week due to Brian Lake building a wall in the backline and refusing admittance to anyone beyond it.

Back to back 50 goal seasons in 14 and 15
12 goals in the 4 grand finals he played
Peter Crimmins Medal.

If we manage to win it this year on what level does that place Gunna?

B tier?

I am incredibly biased in thinking B tier.
I know that's probably too high, but I love the man. I Will unashamedly cry buckets of tears when he pulls on the boots the last time

We are so incredibly lucky to have had the legends we have play for Hawthorn

If he can have another classic Gunners final series (especially a big grand final) he would be right up there.

I sometimes wonder just how good he would have been without his back issues, I've rarely seen so natural a footballer.

I hope he can play another year at least, I love watching a master craftsman go about his trade (in Gunners case that's bamboozling AFL defenders).

His Football IQ is off the charts

Not Sammy level, but also not far off. I have no idea if he has an interest in coaching, but if he does, there will be a very very very long line wanting his services

Porkins played for 18 seasons and also suffered back related injuries. Jack is in his 16th season so realistically could play on after next year.

I’m pretty sure he was helping out in some capacity coaching the women’s team last season, so the interest is there. I’d imagine we would be trying really hard not to lose his experience when he retires. He’s one of the smartest footballers I’ve seen

Not a slight on Gunston, but the A tier of Hawthirn forwards is so far beyond any other club.

Peck, Hudson, Matthews, Brereton, Dunstall and Franklin.

Places comfortably among Moncrieff, Buckenara, Roughead, Rioli and Breust.

I think Rioli would be in that top tier,

If Jack can go on for another couple of years and kick 600 goals I wonder where that would place him on the all time “mid sized” forward list (not small forward like Betts or power forward like Hawkins, that inbetweener type).

Not many mid sized forwards (I’m talking the likes of Mark Williams, Paul Hudson, Peter Daicos, Brad Johnston, Toby Greene, etc) kick over 500 goals.

Of course Matthew’s sits on top of that particular list with a crazy 915 goals but I reckon Gunners would be top ten.

I don't think he will be properly appreciated until he's been retired for a few games.
He hasn't had the media profile that a lot of the higher profile players have, hasn't tried to be a "high profile" player either.
In terms of IQ I think he'd be up there with our greatest forwards of all time, in the same way that I think Breust doesn't/won't get nearly enough love.
Even without the premiership, I think he should go down as one of the greats.

Absolutely. Rioli is the best small forward to play for Hawthorn.

Gunston would be one of the very best medium talls in Hawthorn history.
He's played in 3 Premiership teams where his influence made the team greater.
I don't think he needs anymore goals or another granny to be placed on the the list of Hawthorns great forwards.

Better than Lethal? No.
Lethal was a better player than Cyril, especially when it comes to career accomplishments.

And he was only 1 cm taller than Cyril.

It's more about the era each played in.
Ablett Senior was one of the best Key Forwards of all time, started as Lethal was finishing, and he was only 6 cms taller than Lethal.

When Cyril played, he looked obviously smaller than most other players on the ground.

You can see Lethal is not much shorter than most of the players around him:

Lethal also played more time in midfield than forward especially early to middle of his career.

Despite all this, Lethal kicked nearly twice as many goals per game as Cyril.

I didn't consider Lethal to be a pure small forward, but if we include him as one, it's a no contest that he is clearly Hawthorn's best ever Small Forward.
