Anyone surprised...

Another $10k hit to North's soft cap this season; surely they had better things to spend the money on

What an utter farce of a club. Trying to wriggle out from under this entirely reasonable ban, apparently in the vain hope that having him available might allow them to sneak up to something like six wins for the season.

You could almost understand it if they were actually in contention to make finals. As it is, they just look desperate, sad, and totally unaccepting of their current status in the competition.

Which is of course absolutely what they are.

It isn't like they can tank for picks

True. Still, I do find it ironic that a club that has no meaningful cash in the bank can basically burn real money to simply thumb their nose at good reason. If they were actually running a business with some credibility and a vestige of proper governance in place, there would be real consequences for such gross stupidity and profligacy.

But this is North. So there isn't any credibility and there won't be any consequences.

I'm not sure North's MRO/Tribunal history this year, but following the announcement they were going to challenge the Xerri report there were multiple comments excessively critical based around the soft cap:
  • so glad we've got $30k to waste this year
  • player development is going so well we're not needing to invest money in that area

Etc etc etc

There's some who either genuinely believe Xerri did no wrong or are simply trying to convince themselves of that who voice that challenging was the right idea, but the vast majority knew he was about to enjoy a holiday

I’m not sure how Tassie thinks it can replicate Geelong?

They don’t have the success, history, built in culture, management or geography to pull it off. There’s two reasons why someone would want to play for Tassie.
They are from Tassie or they are getting a boatload more money to go there, that’s it.

Geelong is just over an hour out of Melbourne.
While also very close to the South Coast and outer Western suburbs.
It’s close enough to the big city, far enough away to be rural, has the built in coast for surfing and fishing types and also has Country vibes as well for your blokes who want land.
Also an area that produces such a large amount of footballers in the entire AFL that it has its own nickname. “the Geelong footy factory”

Tassie only has Country vibes or rural, it’s a plane ride away from anywhere that anyone actually cares about (sorry not sorry it’s the truth)
The “major” Cities are small, isolated and there’s nothing to do there for 20 something year olds to wind down.
The amount of players from there in the League itself is low.

I keep seeing people trying to compare the two areas and they aren’t even remotely the same.

I think they're aiming for the country aspects and (to a colder degree) the surfing aspects.

There are some similarities - Hobart is similar to Geelong in size and amenity - it'd suit the right sort of player. The Devils just need to be able to identify the type.

When does the mercy rule come in to play due to unavailability of injured players?

They went into the season with 43 players and this makes 16 names on the injury list this week.

So if it wasn't for the MSD they would be going in with literally 4 players not injured or playing

They need a royal commission. It's like that time they all did peptides and outran their hamstrings
As per Mitch Cleary - only 4 extra players available for selection this week that haven't been named to play tomorrow night

Reminds me of us at the end of the 1998 season when we were so injury ravaged 90% of our reserves team each week didn't meet each other until they walked into the rooms before the game.

I dunno, Essendon's performance with the drugs was merely a 'good' season of 14-8 or something and the AFL disqualified them from finals that season. I maintain the true druggos that did perform above their regular limits was the Eagles in the mid 00's, maybe what the likes of Cousins, Fletcher etc might have been on weren't considered performance-enhancing, but Cousins particularly possessed superhuman stamina and speed for those years, their midfield powering the side to a flag. In the end though, once we got cooking in 2007 we blew the Eagles/Swans/Crows style of footy totally out of the water.

I've got something I'm my head about this, going back 2015 when we really never got our momentum going & ultimately missed finals - Michael Luxford made his debut against Essendon at Marvel and around that time I think we were getting that skint trying to field the VFL team in terms availability with top up options, and had to get permission for one or two guys to travel down from like the Murray Bushrangers

Even the last round of 2023 vs the Dogs, we were missing a lot of regulars including Blics who missed the last few games with a hammy, and it was Conway who actually played, did well early on too before tiring out. Danger's amazing mark and goal at 3/4 time saw the Cats claim a small lead at that time, but the Dogs then stormed home with about 6 goals in the last, with only a Stengle snap late in the last adding to our tally for the last quarter.
