The problem is clubs gaming the system, so the more clubs do it, the more likely there will be a reaction to change things.

Also note that they'll be looking at changes over summer...so AFTER this deal goes through. Unless WCE has a list of other players they intend to 'lose' through highly paid FA deals, this wont adversely effect your club.
I agree that it's ridiculous. It's just funny that it's only a problem when a non-Victorian team benefits as others have remarked.

Expecting Allen will be on a heavily front loaded contract for 2 years to make the most of the soft cap rule of 105% which will be smoothed back and get the eagles the compo pick. Lions should be on the 95% minimum thanks to the retirement of Daniher and holding off any contract extensions for any players coming out of contract in 2026. Ah Chee is likely leaving too.

If you need to re-home Lachie Neale to free up salary cap space and midfield opportunities, we're happy to help

The question is not what the Lions can do for the WCE but what WCE can do for the Lions.

General consensus on the WCE board for Darcy Cameron is the Hawks' first or our R2 so I imagine something in that area.

We should probably avoid all players over the age of 30 given our track record though :p

No, it was a problem when Vic clubs did it.

There were complaints then too.

It's just a case of when it happens once, it's an anomaly, twice it's a concern, three times it's a worry, 4 times...well, we need to do something. (I'm not actually sure of the number of times it's happen, just demonstrating that concern increases each time it happens). Which clubs benefit is irrelevant to that.

Preaching to the choir with this Eagles fans

The solution is simple for alot of AFL stuff. Do what the NBA does. Have restricted free agency be Brisbane making a offer. Eagles match it and keep Oscar forcing Brisbane to do a trade or we dont and get nothing at all back

IMO id be equally as happy to keep Oscar Allen and play him at CHB... but the system doesnt really let that be a viable option im afraid. I wish AFL would get rid of it altogether so we could keep Allen and not have to palm him off in such a way but thats just me

Clubs gaming the system? The contract is from Brisbane, the compo is from the AFL. If it becomes clear that it will be band 2 WC can just match and keep the player or work out a trade.

Gaming the system would be WC trading pick 2 to GC so GC get pick 2 AND two first round academy players.

Brisbanes gaming the system foremost are they not? Without the pick 2 cherry we would basically just keep Oscar Allen and match the contract offer Brisbane are giving and move on.

If we got rid of the compensation system tomorrow, Brisbane dont sign Oscar Allen is the core outcome. Eagles keep Oscar Allen on a 6 year deal because we can easily afford it and dont get pick 2. Brisbane Lions end up with literally zero

For some reason Eagles are the ones seen as benefiting the most from this when in reality we are giving something up to get something. Brisbanes giving up nothing to get something

That's not NBA free agency though.

The NBA also lets West Coast offer pick 1 and 2 to Port for Zak Butters, and Port says yup, regardless of what Zak wants because they believe he'll leave next year and go to a club that doesn't match that offer.

The AFLPA will never allow that, so there needs to be some form of compensation better than "you have an extra list spot open" which is probably going to mean a 4th round or later pick.

I'm okay with the current system as an extra layer to equalisation, but where it falls down is if the AFL are also handing out priority picks like candy.

The Premiership contenders getting a high quality FF for free is equalisation?

Id hate to think what you believe the unfair advantage would be.

If you get rid of the compo, the player still leaves. In this scenario WC would match a bid to force a trade, but they wouldn't get anything close to pick 2 because Brisbane doesn't have it and a banged up Oscar Allen isn't worth it.

Huh? He would just sign the contract and stay because he has a 6 year contract.

The magical world were we match the deal, Oscar Allen has a tantrum and refuses to play football for the next 6 years unless we trade him to Brisbane for a future 2nd rounder is only magical you will find

You're assuming that players only leave their club for money.

What I don't understand is how Brisbane can afford one of the most expensive free agents with their list as it is.
Lions have been front loading contracts for years freed up $1 million from Daniher and salary cap will go up starting next season and our best players are all contracted

Not bid on their academy kids.

Allow our captain to move as a restricted free agent.

As steak knives allow Briztoon back on the Eagles Draft and Trading board. (Thats an in house running joke) 😂 :thumbsu: ;)

Has he?

Do you have links to quotes?

I do? I was at the meeting where he had coffee with Sam Mitchell and he told me it to my face.

“Footylad0, I want these teams to make it rain, I want a briefcase full of cash” - Oscar Allen

There, that’s your quote.

why is briztoon banned from the eagles draft and trading thread?

Imagine actually thinking Oscar doesnt justify band 1 compo on his own 🤣🤣🤣

Have you guys not seen the types of players getting band 1 in recent years? Allen is far more deserving
This is the AFL we are taking about here. We have no idea what they are thinking.

I mean crows finished bottom in 2020. The crows fans actually thought they would get pick 1 or 2 with losing Brad Crouch as a free agent.

The crows got an early 2nd rounder as compo. So pick 20- 23.

I can see Allen gone and eagles get pick 5 compo pick

Well I can.... Joe Daniher retired after the Brisbane 2024 flag didn't he? Surely his wages will be filled up by Oscar Allen.

I mean remember when people got upset when Kurt Tippett joined the swans at the end of 2012 after the Sydney Swans 2012 flag?

Well let me explain that again....

Barry Hall was traded out of the swans that the end of 2009. Sydney needed a full forward to replace Hall.

Swans got a then 32 year old Daniel Bradshaw from Brisbane via PSD on a 3 year deals on $600,000 a year.

So Bradshaw played in 2010. Retired in the middle of 2011. Swans still had to pay out his final year in 2012.

Tippett signed with Sydney. Tippett signed that 5 year deal at $700,000 a year. Dead certain that wages Bradshaw had was filled up by Tippett
