We dont have to do anything. It is still incumbent on the clubs perusing the player to have appropriate compensation for the player they are trying to get.

And when it gets to AFL mediation, I'd be very confident they would agree it's not reasonable to offer a couple of picks that will end up in the 20s and a player they couldn't identify sitting next to on the bus for one of competitions new marquee players. Adelaide will have to part with someone significant if they want a trade to happen.

How would it go to mediation? When does that ever happen? Didn’t happen with JHF or Tim Kelly or Dangerfield or Luke Ball or whoever.

Not that simple. The only way he ends up at West Coast is if we can credibly say “we’d rather get nothing for our star player than get unders”.

I don’t think we can credibly say that. In the closing minutes of the trade period with no deal done yet, SOS will accept scraps rather than nothing. Then at least we get some sort of compensation for the terrible loss and can keep building the list.

Everyone knows that’s what would happen so we have no leg to stand on when we say “we’ll push him to the draft if we have to”. It never happens and won’t here.

Fair value looks like 2 firsts and a fringe player. They just care about the media not the outcome. If that's two picks in the 20s by the time all the FS and academy are taken out that's not their problem.

They have 44 players on their list they can use to get the assets for a fair trade. They can come up with something.
We can turn around and say we want 2 X top 10 picks and a future first round pick

How either club gets it done with their pick hand and players is up to them. That’s the point of future pick trading.

The real genuine clubs about landing superstars prepare a year or two in advanced. See WA clubs with Warner.

If there is no movement on a trade, you just call the AFL for it. Doesn't happen often - last I can find is Ryder's trade from Essendon - but it's an option when a club wont budge on offering unders for an elite player.

I’m starting to warm to the idea that the two year deal is an option but also a backup.

I tend to agree that if he requests a trade it’ll get done at the 11th hour with port or the crows throwing something extra in but in the event it doesn’t I could see him signing the two year deal with us after the trade period expires with no trade rather than risking the psd.

In reality every team in the PSD takes him, especially the eagles, tigers and roos, worst case you’re paying whatever salary he demands for three first round picks. What list manager is NOT gonna do that.
Pretty sure there's a standard contract for draftees for 3 years so he'd be sacrificing a shit ton of money. Around 3 million, if not more. Maybe I'm wrong and u can renegotiate but I don't think so. Would be the cheapest superstar of all time. So yea I think the threat of not getting paid is big.

We can say whatever we want but we haven’t got a leg to stand on in negotiations
We do.

By the same token, clubs can’t have all the ability to make a trade happen and say, nah not trading anyone this is all you get.

He won’t get to either club in that regards.

If you actually need further proof, do some digging on SOS’s previous trade stalemates

Yeah I think then Port would say "we're offering you two firsts and a second, that's a huge price" even though it's a 2026 first and a 2027 first (compromised drafts way in the future) and a second in this draft which will be worth not much either.

Hope you're right but it seems very clear to me how this is going to play out - negotiations always depend on the BATNA of each party and in this case ours is terrible.

He is out of contract.

He isn’t a free agent.

When you accept that the only path forward to SA is via a trade, you’ll see we will get whatever value we think is fair.

And we can say an unknown numbered 1st round pick and who is essentially two seconds is not enough for the best player in the comp. A guy they are apparently offering to paying 2 million in 2026.

They can say whatever they want. Doesn't mean we have to take it as gospel and accept what we know isnt true or fair.

Media cronie number 1 sits on the panel and says Stkilda got screwed. Media cronie number 2 argues that it's just the market system, points to other occurrences and says we've only got ourselves to blame and we just got to cop it.

Exactly, if they are willing to pay Nas 2 mil for 2 years and 1.4 over the life of the 10 year deal then they can stumpnup the equivalent value which is 3 first round picks. 2 top 10 and a later first. If not then SOS will say no deal, this is why we brought in a hard ass negotiator we aren’t going to be bullied by an SA club and Ben ‘big brother winner’ williams in to accepting unders.

Exactly right, ur paying him all this money but think he's just worth some fringe players and shitty picks in the 20s? Hypocrites

The logical thing to do is the two year deal. If he really wants to go home he can move next year and it will give the sa clubs time to stock up on picks. I would also like to think that nas wouldn’t want to screw the club over that has done so much for him. These conversation will start coming up.

That or he has to sit out and play sanfl for 12 months

Players can actually nominate their own contract terms.

It's part of how Luke Ball got to the Pies.

Went into the draft with like 2 years for $3 mil as a contract to scare off the Dees and Lions and then extended it once the Pies grabbed him.
