Oppo Camp Non Geelong football (AFL) discussion 2025, Part 2

It's like a professional ballplayer immediately and automatically putting up his arm pleading for a penalty or foul to be called regardless of the actuality or obviousness showing otherwise. They just do it, shamelessly.

I know a lot of people who had a soft spot for Crom and wanted a Crom flag and thats all vanished because instead of just accepting the penalty, which is a legit penalty, they are pulling this shit.
No I didn’t/don’t want them to win shit, there has always been an unearned arrogance and self entitlement to the Crows that gives me the absolute shits.

I did start to feel a bit sorry for them after they'd moved on from collective minds and were still struggling but their management hasn't learned

But their captain said Rankine, and the club, would cop whatever punishment was handed out.

Now they're back-tracking.
Their BF board is full of conflicting yobbos. Some want it over and done with, some agreeing and putting up extremely valid points around homophobia and what rights the community had up to only recently, then there’s a significant amount of brain dead morons with a massive chip on their shoulders to the weight of the ‘bias Victorian media’ and the ‘VFL HQ’.

It appears the Crows front office is run by the same of the latter types.

This is exactly why we have a very long way to go on equal rights for the LGBT community. Likely also why a male player has never come out.

That's the elephant in the room.It could turn nasty for the Crows.

The AFL should have just given him 5 weeks on Monday in line with all the other sanctions and let the Crows play it out in public if they dared instead of entertaining them behind the scenes. Weak leadership from the AFL.

It’s worse for sponsors in a drawn out scenario, especially national types.

It is surely no coincidence that you get the likes of Tex and Rankine playing (and playing up) at this football club when you consider the kind of leadership that must be in place there. All evasion and no ownership. Protect the player and punt the principle. It's clearly the ideal environment for 'good bloke' culture and 'just a brain fade, nothing to see here' equivocations about everything.

Pretty impressive that a club playing in the national competition in 2025 can still mire themselves in a culture that would have done 80's country footy proud.

Sloane from all reports was a very good leader not sure about the rest of the organization though

I've definitely read much the same about Sloane. But I'd suggest that this current incident underlines my conviction that we can be fairly sure about the quality of leadership across the wider organisation at this point.

Amidst all of this someone has forgotten to mention that Port tried this exact defence last year with the Houston/Rankine incident:

Tribunal: "We do not consider the consequence of missing finals and potentially a grand final impacts the sanction that should be imposed"

It’s just such an easy home run case for the AFL. Graham self reports and gets 4 weeks. Others got 5. Rankine doesn’t self report and even says “finals is worth more” which the tribunal have already said isn’t in consideration.

It’s very clearly 5 weeks minimum.

Why are we even still debating it. Absolute shambles that it’s still ongoing and if AFL cave it’s gonna be hit with extreme backlash

Is it possible that The AFC are trying to slow the case down so that after they lose the appeal, as they know they will, then they will get a court injunction which allows Rankine to play. Then they will slow that down to force the penalty into 2026.
I think this was done with Mark Williams when playing for Sydney or Carlton?
This is really about inclusion and not winning. How would the AFL or people in general feel if the AFLW was boycotted and excluded? No spectators, no one watching ads on tv? Maybe this is the only thing the AFL would understand.
What if the AFL de-register Rankine? He is the one who has breached the rules and is not accepting the penalty, not the AFC.

Interesting thing about our club; I don't recall us ever sooking it up. Must be one of the few who don't.

Surely you jest. I'm continually reminded by the footy media that the Cats 'whine' every year about not playing finals at their home ground, a privilege that is afforded to every other club in the competition apart from ours.

Yet somehow it's apparently our fault that we can routinely point to a clear inequity in the finals fixture. More than that, we have the arrogance to note the double standard and not just accept the 'rules for some' approach of the AFL. Which in this case is actually 'rules for everyone, apart from Geelong', of course.

This 'pathetic whining' may just get another run in the next few weeks. And, if it does, it will be less than a couple of nanoseconds (rounding up) before many in the footy world are out to ridicule the club and to tell us to get back in our box. So don't bother asking anyone outside of the GFC whether they ever see the Cats sooking it up. You won't even be waiting an instant to hear their (spurious) answer.

A very meta answer :D
