Good for Dizzy:

The Lions must be Kings of the 1-year contract extension.
That's one way to keep a close check on your salary cap.

Gardiner turns 30 next month so not finished yet.
Lions still have 8 players on our list older than him.

Not a hard sell when we're in a premiership window

They're keeping all the money they make from the competitions, so it is hard to feel completely sorry for them. The percentage of money they pump into players vs the percentage of players that actually leave is fairly small. I think (and I would be) they're more upset about losing the talent rather than the money they've spent. The money and time think is not a great argument when those resources are being shared by a large group rather than a small few.

It also gives the young tyros the opportunity to follow an elite sports pathway if they choose, that opportunity alone would be worth it in regard to attracting more top athletes away from other sports which present such opportunities.

Starcevich offered 4 x$1.1 million by the Bombers.

Tbh he has to take that with his concussion issues.
Interested in how accurate you rate your source. Not having a go but that is a mammoth offer. He would have to take it. I don’t think we could/should match, even though I rate Strace very highly.

If that’s the offer I don’t think there’s any way we should match that. Starce is great at what he does but a teams defence is more systems and structures based than needing individual talent imo. With our young guns coming through I can’t imagine that being a good use of our cap space

Not my source. Was played on the Beast and Robbo podcast social media page this morning

I don't doubt the offer. Outside of Merrett, who on that Bombers list is getting paid anything of note. They'd be having more trouble than the Saints in paying the cap.

Merrett will hear of that offer and demand a raise of $1.1m/yr

If we match and Starce accepts how do we afford it?

Assuming thats how it works
These conversations would be much easier if the AFL was clearer and more open about the cap and salaries.

I’m a big NBA fan and these types of discussions are probably my favourite but it’s near impossible in the AFL while not having so much information.

Agree, I have liked the look of Jacob Blight (OOC and played a few games for the Tigers this season) from the snippets I have seen, not sure if he is much better than Joyce though.

Someone substantially better will be hard to find.

Blight looked a great prospect. Would absolutely have him as depth.

We can only match if we currently have the cap space to do so.

I haven't got the patience or mathematical ability to do it but it would be great to see one of our knowledgeable posters guesstimate and itemize every player and their salaries on our list and fit them into the salary cap...$17,800,000?

Good luck to Starch if he can get that offer.
Footy career is around 10 years for good AFL players without to many injuries.
He is playing his 8th year now

If he does leave, hopefully it is as a two-time premiership Lions player

Would never happen but if we could do that then compare with the actual numbers it would be interesting. I’d imagine our guesstimate would be a long way off the reality in a few cases

Does anyone have any insight into our "Exit Interviews", i.e. who conducts them, what happens and how long the meetings last. With 38 players on the list I assume they only last about 15 minutes or so and most of the stuff covered has already been communicated prior to the interview, particularly if a delisting is on the cards.
Adam Simpson was on SEN this morning, explaining the whole process.

Players up around the 850K to 1 Million mark on our list IMO >

Harris Andrews, Hugh McCluggage, Lachie Neale.

Next level down >

Jarrod Berry, Josh Dunkley, Brandon Starcevich, Charlie Cameron, Zac Bailey.... Do Cam Rayner/Jack Payne fit in here?

We have a lot of younger guys who will be deserving of substantial pay rises over the next few years >

Will Ashcroft, Jaspa Fletcher, Darcy Wilmot, Logan Morris, Kai Lohmann, Levi Ashcroft.... Sam Marshall?

The scuttlebutt around the possible departures of Ah Chee and Starcevich would have lot to do with forward planning re these young talented players.

Dougie Cochrane (Port NGA - potentially) is currently the number 1 rated kid by most draft watchers.

Cody Walker is in the top 5 discussion.

Essendon have a top rated father son in 2027 in Kobe Bewick. Plus they have a lot of nga kids coming through.

If the WA clubs set their NGA academies up right, they have a large pool of South African immigrants and the largest indigenous population to draw from.

And the SA clubs have been fighting for greater access to on metropolitan indigenous kids, who are currently locked out their academies by the AFL. That’s why the likes of Rankine and Wanganeen-Milera were in the open pool.
There's a thread for Cochrane on the port board has some interesting info

Cochrane's family have been recognised as having indigenous heritage. Dougie was included in the AFL's indigenous academy and is a part of ports NGA program. He just isn't recognised as a player port can match a bid on at this stage. Port are (or were) expecting a response to that fairly shortly.

The AFL does have specific rules around inclusion to clubs NGA programs. Other clubs have missed out on players they've wanted to include in the past.

They (posters on the power board) believe there is enough evidence that over a period of years that through rules changes/tweeks that metro kids with indigenous heritage in a clubs NGA program are available to match bids on at the draft, for the SA & WA clubs as of this draft

Clearly if the AFL change the rules as being discussed over the last few days that's all out the door

If the changes do go through, port will be 1 of the clubs most disadvantaged right now. It's not just Cochrane next year. They also have Pilot (NGA), Salopek and Rodan (FS) coming through in the 2027. All are projecting as 1st round picks atm.

Cracking game as neutral to watch on Sunday. Still think you're the team to beat

What does it mean when it is put like this?
I read it as a kid who grew up white in a typical white family but recently found out that his great great grandmother was aboriginal.
