I'm talking about players in general - our veterans are on stuff all in terms of the salary cap compared to when they were 26 - as we're only paying them for the upcoming year and not building in a retention component for the years to come.

of course you are going to pay more for a player likely to be around 4-5 years than those that are extending a contract by a year, but you don't alienate current players to get an outsider in on extravagant money who has done stuff all .
i don't care what people say, that is where jealousy and the "what about me" attitude floats to the surface ( with good reason )
we are seeing it at St Kilda right now with Marshall and Wilkie

RE: ZAK BUTTERS

Hi guys,

Spoke to someone very close to the Zak Butters camp this morning.

He has received contract offers of close to $2m per season from both the Western Bulldogs and Geelong. Both are willing to trade for him this year, but think Port are unlikely to let him leave early.

These clubs are at the front of the que purely for financial reasons (they are offering Butters the best financial packages) - and not because he has a geographical preference to live near Bacchus Marsh or the Surf Coast.

Interestingly though, I asked why he wouldn't join a club like Collingwood, considering we are the biggest club in the AFL, and he would be able to play in blockbusters at the MCG every second week.

The answer I got was interesting......

I was told Butters would love to play for a powerhouse like Collingwood, but that as of yet, Collingwood had not yet made any concrete approach, let alone put forward a contract offer.

The feeling I got was that if we did put forward a compelling offer, we would probably jump to the front of the que.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have had the view that we would have a hard time approaching top 10 in the league-calibre superstars over coming years, because we already had the best player in the league who has signed a long-term contract for unders, and therefore we could never really justify approaching someone and paying them considerably more (apart from maybe Bont), without upsetting the apple cart, and justifiably so.

However, considering Nick himself has named Butters as the best player in the league, this may be an exception to the rule.

Considering the pending retirements we have over the coming years, I would be pretty comfortable offering Butters close to $2m a season, considering at the salary cap will be close to $20m by 2027 - $2m in 2027 is what $1.2m was in 2021-22.

Need to be wary how I word this

I find it interesting in all this talk with free agents and what they're being offered - and more specifically with Silvagni, that you don't really see the mental health side of it mentioned much despite Mental Health issues being such a selectively hot topic of discussion in the AFL. Emphasis on selective here.

Now I'm not suggesting one way or the other that it should be a consideration, just food for thought.

I'm noticing now that many are more than willing to give up Jack if the rumoured offers from St.Kilda are true, which is totally fair enough from a Collingwood perspective.

But I have to wonder if Jack himself is wondering if he wants that sort of burden on his head? Does he think the extra $200K is worth the potential headaches that could come with the weight of expectation that suddenly get placed on him both from a St.Kilda fanbase persepctive and media persepctive? I just thought about whether that kind of thought is part of his process? Just more curious than anything else. I think back to Perryman and the reported offers of 900K from us suddenly intensified the scrutiny he came under and some of the stuff being said about him and his performances when he came across.

"Yeah, it's 200K more, but with that 200K more comes way more scrutiny and way more pressure. Plus more of a magnifying glass on Dad and how much of a role he played in this"

Again to make it clear I'm not suggesting that is part of his thought process round this or that it should be. Just more curious if it would be.

Maybe he's happy to take less at a better and bigger club to play alongside his best mate(s) and a genuine shot a flag?

I'm still dying on the hill that he's coming to us and has most likely already made that decision
It’s a good point. For Jacks whole career he’s been under intense pressure having to live up to the Silvagni name.

I’m pretty sure he admitted early days it got to him but he’s come to realise he doesn’t need to be anyone else but himself. Who knows if it does still get to him in a way.

From all reports and those close to him, he just wants to be happy and in a winning environment. You would take 200k less for that… I know I would, because you don’t take money to your grave, you take the memories.

Taking less cash at the biggest club with plenty of off field earnings, playing in front of huge crowds at the G most weeks alongside your best mate just sounds like a no brainer.

Like Perryman said yesterday, he feels like the club is contending every single year. That’s the constant language coming out of the club. We’re chasing success always. That’s the place you want to be.

No one want to lose Bobby...... but
at least Gold Coast have a lot of young talent we could poach .
Flanders
Walter
King
Reid
Humphrey
I wouldn’t want him involved in a world where Bob is traded. He’s at least 2 years away and that’s if he gets there. With the senior players going around again it would have to include one of the other 4 who can make an immediate impact.

Is it alienating the older players though? The alternative to us bringing in experienced players isn't to just sign the oldies for more - we're stuffed if we do that. We need to add players because we have a whole lot of retirements coming. The alternative to bringing in guys like Silvagni, Houston, Perryman, which you have to pay good money for, is to clear out the oldies and re-fresh with young players, dropping down the ladder in the process.

the 2 "oldies" in limbo are Elliott and Mihocek
who are going to kick our goals?

Elijah Hollands is on the table. Seems perfect for another Geelong steal. Doubt we could get the best out of him, but he'd be a great addition football-wise Culture wise the jury is out.
**** Geelong. Hope they get him for nothing, pull themselves over it like usual and he ends up corrupting Steggles and a half dozen other players and ruining the joint

wouldn't touch him with a 10ft pole
Agree. Listening to Voss talk about how disappointed they were with him & why they thought it best he look elsewhere, tells you everything.

He's exactly the type of player they need and they're willing to pay him out just to get rid of him.

You're crying over unspilt milk. Neither have left yet. And if they do, we either won't be as good next year or we'll have to find replacements.

Either way Silvagni shouldn't impact their contract offers. We shouldn't be going all in for 1 year - Despite the media narrative, we signed Houston and Perryman for 5 and 6 years. We're not in a position to keep the oldies at all costs as we need to keep adding players to stay up for more than 1 year - which needs to be the list management strategy. If they do leave we look for replacements either internally or externally, but probably won't be as good next year.
