2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Tauru was recruited as a defender and has shown great potential there

Plus we have Sharman, Owens, King and potentially Marshall roaming forward.

Seems a big change to recruit an unproven 24 year old on big dollars.
I think Tauru was recruited as an almost anywhere player
Back, forward, wing ive heard mentioned
When moved forward in the Melbourne game?
He looked a natural with high footy lQ.
More fun for the fans to watch him forward too.
But, as for Aleer, we have the 3rd tall back covered with both,Jsos & Wilkie

Doesn’t really seem like the club is stressed “being over a barrel” in the way they were with Nas.

Which is the point. If this another player you didn’t like. You wouldn’t care. But you rate Windy so you think it’s stupid and we should pay up.

I look at purely in terms of will the list be better next year. There is no point in topping up if are going sideways. We are paying a lot more for the privilege. It's a confused roadmap to me.

Tbf, I’m not sure anyone realised he would be this good this year.

Agree with you about Windy though. Really hope we don’t lose him. But asking price does seem too high.

I said that he could be the best player in the AFL and soon. And I'm an idiot who spends all day on a forum. Not sure what they were watching.

Wasn't it always for four years. Maybe Windy could ask to go in the back pocket and get Aleers contract instead 😆😆
I can't remember reading about the amount of years on offer but you could be right.

4 X $750k is what is being reported at the moment. Seems like a strange one to go through with after just signing Silvagni, especially after Aleers season.

I do watch most Giants games and he's been really disappointing this year. And I was keen for us to go after him 12 months ago.

I'd be much more comfortable offering that contract to Windhager than I would Aleer.

He was banned from the BnF because he told the coach and playing group he was staying and then dropped a big boy what’s app text and left.

Had he been honest and genuine from the start. He would have been at the BnF.
Correct.

I think ross will defend his player to the bitter end but I think he also expects honesty and respect coming back.

Battle didn't do that for him. Did it for hawthorn.

I think it’s depends on how coaches rate certain players. For example, Nas as a game breaker which is rare, ideally he wouldn’t be on $2M now, but the 2 Adelaide clubs offering silly money has changed that. Windy as good and tough as he is, is not a natural ball Winning mid, he is more a defensive mid like Steele. We wanted ball winning mids that can really change the game, hence the persuit for Flanders and Mackenzie, there’s a reason those 2 were drafted in the first round and Windy was a third round NGA pick, there’s only so many spots in the midfield, apart from Flanders/Mackenzie/Macrae (assume Steele will leave), we also have Garcia and Boxshall who have higher ceiling as mids. For the above reasons and not just for money, Windy might look elsewhere which is fair on both sides

I for one welcome our Sudanese overlord

Seriously hope he surprises us all. Not one I understand but they must see something in him. He at least looks spectacularly athletic.

We barely have a full midfield to choose from and most clubs don't only have a couple in reserve. He is a player who is super adaptable he isn't just an inside mid.

I think people are missing how good windys last 10 or so games were once he was let off the leash a bit

He’d have been our best player over that period if not for nas

That game he started half back was giving me Sinclair and Josh daicos vibes and gives Ross different leavers to pull

Let’s not forget he’s culturally important and should be leadership group next year

He’s a must keep

He looks a natural defender to me. He's got an amazing ability to come out of nowhere and get a first on the footy.

They challenged him to get better and run through the midfield, everyone could see he was a special talent, even the dullards that are employed at the club. He was offered 1.3 a yr which was a fair value of his worth at the time.

However the way he played culminating in the Melbourne finish launched him into the stratosphere.
If you don't think they were trying to sign him before his rapid rise, well I don't know what to say.
His manager wisely told him to wait. Eventually he signed with us for a million less over two years than the Port offer, but still at 2 million.
Don't know what you think they could have done differently if he wouldn't sign earlier.

The club didn't see his improvement coming was my only point. Not sure what you are on about.

No one ever said TDK is a bargain

It just makes sense given the context of our list. A young-ish ruckman who was in AA conversations early in the year before copping injuries recruited free of draft capital and we cough up an extra 600k, which was saved when we overpaid our stars the last few years thus they are underpaid now - which they contractually agreed to

He is a potential game-winning superstar who has been compared to Max Gawn. He has also been dubbed by Max Gawn himself as potentially the next #1 ruckman of the competition - he has never said that about anyone else. It is almost the equivalent of a salary dump from our POV. You people that are against signing him are taking the recruitment of a high-profile player for free for granted as if we can just land a different one for free

Windy, on the other hand, is a worker bee. Fills holes in team structure and plays according to the coach. He is NOT a game changer and has NEVER shown an ability to change the side's fortunes to the extent of 800k+/year. He is NOT the type you pay overs for IMO, especially when you have the likes of Boxshall, Hastie, Travaglia, O'Connell and others vying for best 23 spots who have shown that they can play similar roles

And on your point about it potentially being a disaster - we are giving up at most 2x 2nd rounders & maybe a Windy/Marshall for TDK, JSOS, Ryan, Aleer*, Flanders/mid

What is the upside/cost ratio here do you think? Would you prefer the former or the latter combo? Genuine question
Well we had the latter combo.
And we finished 12th.
You don’t add to your list, and fill existing gaps, you go backwards.

Pretty sure they would’ve foreseen improvement.
But to that extent, and so quickly, maybe not.
And nor would any other club have.
