"Forget the state leagues" - If a recruiter went with this mindset you'd be out of the job quick smart.

He's come from the state leagues as a 24yo, looks to have the potential to be a ripper based on a short sample of form. But that doesn't mean there isn't anymore out there that have put together longer more consistent form lines.

I'd already contributed earlier in the thread with some suggestions in the state league for key defenders who deserve a look, apologies for not living my life on this forum like yourself.

Not just Young (Frankston). Callum Wilkie came from North Adelaide as a 24yo.

Given the tendency for KPDs to only come into prominence around 21-24 years of age there are likely to be a few state league candidates each year. Jordon Butts was another latish bloomer - a rookie pick who only debuted for Adelaide 4 months short of his 21st birthday. And he only had two games that year.

I'm not against going for Young if he's gettable but given the difficulty in prising loose a decent KPD we should be casting our net as widely as possible.

And that Butts debut is responsible for one of my favourite AFL headlines of all time

Sam Collins (the second time around) was picked up at the age of 24 from Box Hill.

Going on a tangent, if no-one truly stands out at the end of the draft/rookie draft, I actually think we should keep at least one, if not two list spot(s) open for the mid-season draft.

Last week I posted about Daniel Turner - if we miss out on most/all of our options this off-season, IMO he should be our #1 KPD uncontracted target in the comp at the end of 2026.

But as a side note though, while I was trying to find Turner's contract status, I stumbled upon this tidbit:

"Melbourne was one of only two clubs that expressed any interest in Turner before the 2021 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. The Western Bulldogs also picked up the phone but, ultimately, they didn't have a pick."

Of-****ing-course.

Add him to Mannagh on the list of players that would have been taken if we had used a pick (or an extra pick) in the mid-season draft.

IMO, in a decision between taking speculative picks in the 60s and 70s in a weak draft vs giving the entire draft class another 8-9 months to prove their wares and picking from the cream of that over-age crop, I think the latter is a much more likely path to produce a diamond.

Should make a list of all those who were happy not to over pay Silvagni. Because I dont want to hear them whinging about our defence next year.

I wonder if Barass chose hawthorn because he was more interested in play at Launceston than Ballarat?

Maybe Butters will prefer the mudflats of Kardinia than Ballarat too?

I dont believe for a second that should Butters leave port it'll be for geographic or family reasons.

It'll be for whomever has the biggest money truck of **** off money.

The speculation about his future over the next 6 months is going to reach levels of insanity never seen in the game.
