But we are bringing in White, Evans, Buku, Chesser, Petrecelle etc. So we are a destination club of sorts; just not a destination club for high quality players. Those types go to Cats, Pies, Lions, Hawks etc...

What’s Austin’s record of bringing in players. My gut feel is it’s not too bad - Boyd , Holland others ?

We have Dean who is expected to be bid on in the first 8-10 picks and now Ison who has started to climb the draft boards. Plus it is a bit risky to trade future picks with Walker hopefully coming in next year. So we are constrained to a certain extent
Uh uh, no you dont. The club didnt know TDK/JSoS were leaving until late in the season so would have had other plans in place for those players.

We laugh as SoS recruiting his old players but not Austin. Double standards. Stocker played more than Boyd right now?

Holland shows disconnect between Voss and Austin. Austin recruits a winger with an outside chance of mid. Voss plays gim half back.

The club is just not on point. Ollie is a winger and not a haf back due to cant hold his feet when tackled so needs outside space (wing).

The club would have 100% known that there was a very high likelihood that TDK was gone from a long way out. Especially, when it was made clear from our side earlier in the season that we weren't going to lift our offer for him. And in a world TDK/JSOS stayed I think one of our other "big 5" would have been moved on. Not to mention Dean wasn't expected to be a top-10 pick earlier this year and Ison was not expected to be a top-30 chance either.

Was actually referring to Elijah

He won those after 2.5 years out of the game - that's how naturally freakish he is.

2022 he was going in 3rd gear - it was a poor year for the Coleman.
2023 he clicked into 2nd gear for a while
2024 he didn't get out of 3rd
2025 he was in neutral

yes, its crazy he still achieved 2x colemans doing this, but he is/was capable of more. he's going to be held to a high standard due to his ability - too bad.

Reckon he is playing too deep; he can spin off a step and launch from outside 50. Was also very impressed with his defensive efforts.

I cannot reiterate how important a good run in pre season training is. His best is as good as anyone going around.

So you think there is nothing Carlton have to attract a high calibre player this off-season?

I never said that. I just think it will be difficult unless we move on a player with value like Curnow. Regardless, players like Chesser/Khamis etc aren't going to be the reason we can't go after high quality senior players. With the salary cap room we have now free agency would have probably been our best bet with limited draft capital but doesn't seem like a strong class this year.

Actually interested in this myself, ignoring all of the drafts these are the aquisitions we've made via trade and FA since Austin took the helm at the start of 2020:

2020:
Zac Williams: I'd say fail with the money he was on and his intended output
Adam Saad: Win for mine, slowed a bit recently but has been one of our most consistent and important players

2021:
George Hewett: A+ move, been super consistent and one of our absolute best since he's arrived
Adam Cerra: This one's borderline but considering we gave up pick 6 I'd consider it a fail, but only just. Not Austin's fault, bad run with injuries and at his best has looked worth it and then some. Still has time to make it a win as well.
Lewis Young: Cost nothing, plugged some important holes when he's needed to, I'd consider this a tick.

2022:
Blake Acres: I think this is a win, yeah he's been poor recently but cost us nothing and filled a desperate need, plus instrumental in our 2023 run.

2023:
Elijah Hollands: I think a fail but again not Austin's fault, if he got his off-field stuff together this would have been an awesome trade for us.

2024:
Nick Haynes: Win, filled a need and played awesome all year, cost nothing.

All in all I'd say an ok record. Done a fine job in this regard IMO but hasn't been excellent.

Here’s how I see the ideal end game if there’s any genuine GC link to Charlie:

  • GC trade: Walter + Pick 6 for Charlie
  • WCE trade: Picks 6 & 9 (TDK compo) to West Coast for Pick 2 + Chesser

Then the question becomes: would the Silvagni compo pick plus Brisbane’s second-rounder be enough to cover a bid for Dean?

We’d have to secure other picks to make plays for Gruewvski/Khamis etc - and possibly to make points coverage for Ison.

But the crux of it would be in: Walter, Pick 2 (Duursma/CDT), Dean, Chesser
I’d want more from Gold Coast.

I think if Carlton have another disastrous season another key player will leave in frustration at the end of next year continuing a negative cycle/exodus. I wouldn't read too much into Walsh/Weiterings words when you see massive backflips elsewhere in sport (Rory Mcilroy on LIV vs PGA).

So this means its critically important Voss and the coaching group fix a lot of ball movement issues in one season which is if we are honest really unlikely. But a chance i guess. Add to the fact that we are diluting our talent downwards in the short term.

Playing with fire.

So out of curiosity, what would be your ideal moves this off-season with the capital we have?

Also brought in Matt Carroll, Cooper Lord, Jordan Boyd, Alex Cincotta, Wil White, Hudson O’Keefe as rookies/supplementary/mid season draft picks.

Also traded up to get Lachie Cowan on draft night at 30ish. Pretty good record imo

I think Charlie to GC will happen, so the good thing is we can do several different trade scenarios with them because of the amount of young talent they have. Now that GC are a finals side, they would probably be even more into a player like Charlie Curnow. He elevates from finals contender to flag contender overnight.
So pay up.

The thing is - i personally think we're pickled/screwed no matter we try. With our current age/salary profile and intended mini reset, i think it fails as players exit quicker than we find replacements. The last 4 years was our chance to build the right ingredients and we just didnt for whatever reason. So i really do think they have stuffed this chance; a really good chance.

But good rated players include Sam Flanders or Walter. Better rated than Buku, Petrucelle, Chesser etc. I think why we fail is we conyiually target good players without a role for them (e.g. Cerra). Hawks target players for roles. We just havent learnt and target quality for quality's sake.
