Interesting, but I wouldn't have thought that, given it's already almost $400k more than his current deal at the Saints, the contract size is the issue ?

When Dunkley wanted out to Essendon, he was apparently on about $500k, and they'd offered $800k? Regardless of whether that offer was upped to $900k, $1mil or $1.1mil, he was a contracted player and we held the cards.

Unless St Kilda is going close to matching the deal, in which case we'd need to blow it out of the water to get him to move.
We need a contract in front of Wilkie that is so attractive, that he is not on the fence (in any way) about leaving. Saints don't want to trade and would only do it if he looks like becoming an unhappy distraction to their playing group. The size of our contract offer is the best way to get that ball rolling

That said, i don't think he'll leave or get so disgruntled that'd he would become a distraction

That was the case with Silvagni. Saints offered $250k more a season and we wouldn’t budge because of our concerns about his durability.
I'm more comfortable paying $1.1m for Wilkie than paying $800k for Silvani, or anything over base salary for Aleer.

I’m sorry but I just can’t see us landing Wilkie. Even if he nominates us, Saints will surely hold home to contract.
It may force them to up contact to him.
No harm in adding the question of an absolute gun player in a position of need.

I do have concerns over the trade cost though.

I’d be happy if we added hundreds of thousands to that figure. He’s great.

Would take a monumental disintegration of their relationship for him to go nuclear and force his way out.

Based on Gabelich’s reporting we want an answer from Wilkie before move to another target. Potentially puts a time crunch on him getting a commitment out of the Saints. Which they should be readily giving him.

I do wonder if we're waiting for Adelaide to finish their season before we move on.

I dont. No quality backman reinforcements then another lost season with Bont. Throw the kitchen sink at him IMO

Two firsts without even thinking about it. This year’s first is meh.

If it’s a no from Wilkie then straight on to Butts. Not as expansive a defender as Wilkie but frees up Lobb & O’Donnell. I think O’Donnell could be a gun with a bit more scope to intercept.

I absolutely agree - as long as we're not putting all our eggs in an unlikely basket. There need to be pretty strong backup plans. I'll be livid if we end up still trying to make this work a minute before the deadline and then go into next season with the same unit.

Are you saying throw the kitchen sink at him or the saints? How much trade capital are we willing to give up keeping in mind we’re going to need significant assets to make a play for Butters this year or next

Butters won't help the gaping whole we have . Wilkie will. $$ and picks for Wilkie. That's my opinion and we all know how good Butters is.

So who else would we be recruiting other than Wilkie? It seems like it’s Wilkie OR Young OR Burt’s, not AND. That backline needs more than one fix. I know we have some younger guys like Sellwood, but we still lacking another defender.
