Jack Billings delisted by Melbourne, he’s going to slot in well on a wing for us to let Bont & mini Bont flourish

The time to get Billings (and Kelly) was while Tom Boyd was still playing, so we could boast the top 4 picks of the 2013 draft... and Bont was the last of the 4 picked! Oh, St Kilda...! 😱

Just how good is Jordan Butts anyway? Is he substantially or marginally better than what we already have? His career stats, albeit taking into consideration he's had a couple of injury interrupted seasons, look quite modest. Perhaps someone who has seen him play more often can elaborate on his abilities.
Forget stats. He's a stopper. He can defend an opponent, would instantly make our defence stronger. Would take the deepest opposition KPD and allow Lobb/ JoD to play roles more suited to their style.

Finally we have a rising star champion in our rotation

If Wilkie asks for a trade and Saints decline the process is in motion. I think there is more chance of Wilkie leaving than Curnow leaves the Blues. Our offer is a bucket load more and double the length of the current contract. The saints either significantly increase his current deal or they are left with a disgruntled player if he stays.

The problem is that he's contracted. Do you really think after the cash being splashed around, the Saints are going to go 'hey give us your first rounder and change and that's a fair deal'? The guy is/was going to be their captain in 2026.

The far more likely scenario is that they hold firm, draw a line in the sand and back themselves that he'll front up as a professional. Every poster on this board would expect the Bulldogs to do the same thing.

So Butts could really plug a hole in our back half?

(its going to be a long off season, isnt it?)

So we make him a Godfather offer, bleed the Saints dry and if he stays we move onto the next target.

This is in reference to goodcop badcop ’s post in the contract status thread (I don’t want to clutter up that thread with random chat):

Is there any point in the AFL persisting with the Category A rookie classification?

Cat A rookies seem to have the same rights as a normal full list player. It seems an unnecessary complication which is only there for historical reasons.

Cat B I can understand but not Cat A.

Not really, and it's been an argument for years.

The only real difference is contract length but there are already mechanisms in place for that now anyway (e.g. mature aged players can be put on the main list on a 1 year contract).
