David Swallow currently holds the record for the most VFL/AFL games played without competing in a final with 247 games played to date. However, that record is about to change after Damien Hardwick confirmed on AFL 360 last night that Swallow will be selected to play in the Suns v Dockers elimination final this Saturday night. So the record will now revert to St Kilda's Trevor Barker (230) and several other Suns players like Touk Miller (212) and Jarrod Witts (203) will also be removed from the list over the weekend.

27yo Jy Simpkin (173) will either move to first or second (13 games behind nearly retired 32yo Alex Sexton) on the list and is 57 games shy of the Barker's record. Considering their ages and Sexton only managing 5 games this year (plus the possibility they he may end up playing a final this year or next) as opposed to Simpkin who played 21 games for the 16th placed Roos in 2025, it's fair to assume Simpkin will overtake Sexton soon to lead the list of current players. But will he take Barker's all-time record over the next few years and will he ever play a final? He's currently contracted to North for another four seasons until 2029, at which point he will turn 31 years of age.

In case anyone is wondering, the record for most games played before playing a final is 269 and that's held by Melbourne's Robbie Flower, who played his first final at 32yo in his last season.

Even if he doesn't get a touch and the suns lose because Swallow is a liability, he deserves this opportunity and 100% should play.

Top 10 for current players looks like this now:
  • 186 - Alex Sexton (Gold Coast)
  • 173 - Jy Simpkins (North)
  • 156 - Darcy Tucker (Fremantle, North)
  • 147 - Nick Holman (Carlton, Gold Coast)
  • 143 - Cameron Zurhaar (North)
  • 134 - Nick Larkey (North)
  • 134 - Charlie Ballard (Gold Coast)
  • 132 - Zac Fisher (Carlton, North)
  • 130 - Luke Davies-Uniacke (North)
  • 128 - Jack Silvagni (Carlton)
Sexton won't top that list for very long as he's about to turn 32yo and is already on the outer after only managing 5 games this year. Fair few of the North boys like 27yos Simpkin, Tucker, Zurhaar and Larkey could give Trevor Barker's all-time record of 230 games a fair shake if they don't climb the ladder soon.

Tucker shouldn't be on an AFL list now, let alone in several years, and Larkey & Zurhaar would 100% be poached by someone in a finals window before 80 odd games.

So it's down to Simpkin.

How old is Nick Larkey? 27 years old?

I really want him to tear up a finals series.

You're expecting Larkey and Zurhaar to leave?

Simpkin definitely seems the most likely as it doesn't look like he's going to leave the Roos and is contracted until 2029. Assuming injuries don't strike, he'll get very close to 200 games this time next year and is only a little over one full season short of Trevor Barker's record of 230 games. He'll only be 28yo at that point in time so he's obviously very capable of playing the 1.5-2 seasons required to get there.

I wonder if the current situation with Zac Merrett will end up influencing Simpkin later down the track. Let's say Merrett leaves and goes on to play in several winning finals or even a grand final with the Hawks, would it inspire a player like Simpkin to do likewise if North don't get it together?

So by "soon" the OP means 2028?
Depends on what you're looking at. If you're looking at current players, then Jy Simpkin is very likely to surpass Alex Sexton to top that list at some point in 2026. If we're talking all-time, then the earliest Simpkin (or anyone for that matter) can get there is 2028. He's contracted to the Roos until the end of 2029.

Seems like he's keen to not hold the record that's been mentioned in this thread and knows it's probably coming if he stays with the Roos.

I don't think you'd be very popular on the North board, pushing Jy out like this.

Problem is I'm not sure any current finals level club would have him cemented in the best 22 to give him his first game, so ironically he would be picked up by someone thats also a while off finals.
