Don’t think so. 6’0 v 6’1 doesn’t change much.Does the inch difference in height between Cooper Simpson and Judd McVee matter in terms of contesting the ball?
I’d have McVee at number one on your second list.I'm absolutely happy to bring him in, improves our squad for sure. I'm saying as a hypothetical that it's a risk for him. The Freo 23 is hard to break into now unless you're a gun wing. We don't have spare minutes in midfield.
Great thing for the club, not necessarily great for the player.
We can reasonably expect Sharp, NOD, Johnson, Walker, Erasmus, Simpson, Draper to all push for B23 spots in those areas next season.
How many spots are up for grabs? You can lock in:
So that leaves only five more spots available. In order of likelihood they're going to:
- Pearce,
- Cox,
- Clark,
- Chapman,
- Ryan,
- Wagner
- Serong,
- Brayshaw
- Jackson,
- Darcy,
- Bolton,
- Switkowski,
- Frederick,
- Reid,
- Voss,
- Treacy,
- Amiss,
- Young.
This is even before we consider trades and draft. It is not impossible we get a player in the draft that pushes for a spot.
- Erasmus,
- Johnson,
- Worner,
- NOD,
- Simpson,
- Banfield
- Dudley,
- Draper,
- Sharp,
- McDonald,
- Davies.
Where does McVee slot in to that second list? Maybe before Banfield?
More competition for those spots is obviously very good for us, we need depth.
This is why I'm quite optimistic for next season, there is so much growth and development that can still occur in the lower end of the B23, plus we should see full pre seasons from Young, Darcy, and Jackson.
Not sure Wagner is locked in. On this year’s form, absolutely, but I think he might be top of your second list, just because we don’t know yet whether he can be relied on to perform at the same level next season.I'm absolutely happy to bring him in, improves our squad for sure. i don’t think anyone is interested but he’s still trying to find a better deal for himselfPort not into Motlop per inside trading
Wonder what the holdout is for him then, who is actually interested
Could be the casei don’t think anyone is interested but he’s still trying to find a better deal for himself
It’s funny we spent so many years complaining about missing out on him through ur nga and now that he’s available we’re not even looking his way lmaoCould be the case
Unless it was no more than an excuse to put off making a decision. Now that Stephen King is named as the new Dees coach we should know within a week or two what Judd McVee plans are
Don’t think so. 6’0 v 6’1 doesn’t change much.
Those are medium sized guys int he modern game anyway.
Jack Ginnivan is 6’1 and he’s supposedly a “small” forward nowadays
We should talk him up big time and thenLiam Reidy isn’t Meek. Be lucky to even get a fourth rounder
Totally agree. He fits our list profile and team structure perfectly and has been somewhat held back because of the Demons and the other players in their backline.McVee is listed at 185cm and that seems about right. He can play taller as well. Good leap and rangy arms. Simpson is listed at 182cm, but he seems shorter to me. Listed heights are often wrong.
Simpson is absolutely not a medium sized player in the modern game. He is a small player without doubt and McVee has a distinct advantage in size/reach.
If you look at his 2024 highlights package there are a few moments where he does things that Simpson would find very difficult or even impossible. Spoils McReery 1-on-1. Takes down Stringer in a tackle when Stringer goes the fend off. Outbodies and outmarks Stringer 1-on-1. Spoils Caddy 1-on-1. There's another one where he comes from the back of a few players and spoils easily over the top of Tom McDonald (195cm, but he was backing back and couldn't get a good leap).
I captured the Caddy spoil as an example. McVee was also first to the ground ball.
I don't think he had a great 2025, but watch his 2024 package, and it's bloody impressive. Sure, that's what highlights are supposed to be. Cherry pick the best bits. But he has Jordan Clark 2.0 vibes to me. I don't want to give up our 1st for him. Should be a 2nd. But based on the rating of this draft, picking up a better player in the draft with our 1st might be hard work.

Look at it this way.We should talk him up big time and then![]()
Classic moneyball pick up this season. He had no preseason this year, and I think this is why he struggled.
I would love to get him.
i don’t think anyone is interested but he’s still trying to find a better deal for himself
I'm one of maybe a handful of freo supporters who believe we can fix him. Honestly think its a no brainer considering our lack of small forward depthHe will be included in the Reidy trade.
Just let that trade marinate for a bit. It will be good in the end.
Port not into Motlop per inside trading

Will be Guts Up in Bali within 3 months.Should we be looking at Elijah Hollands? Bit of a risk considering his off-field issues but is a very good footballer forward of centre. We'd absolutely need to do our due diligence.
Carlton took him on knowing his issues and they've just gotten worse. He got given a second chance and blew itShould we be looking at Elijah Hollands? Bit of a risk considering his off-field issues but is a very good footballer forward of centre. We'd absolutely need to do our due diligence.

Likely a lost cause then - shame considering his footballing ability.Carlton took him on knowing his issues and they've just gotten worse. He got given a second chance and blew it
Meanwhile nose beers Bailey has one on one meetings with Dill, can abuse the press with impunity and possibly wins a few medals this yearCarlton took him on knowing his issues and they've just gotten worse. He got given a second chance and blew it
I agree with Worner and Banfield. Cooper is only 20 yo versus McVee is 22, you need to wait and see to be making that call, what of seen of Cooper is a huge upside and his kicking is like Hayden Youngs , a real weapon, it is what I forseeTotally agree. Would definitely get out some red carpet to get him over the line. Get the AFLW team to bring over the girlfriend as well.
He's a better addition to our backline than Worner, Banfield and Simpson, probably takes Ryan's spot in a few years.
Trading with Carlton; yuck.He will be included in the Reidy trade.
