Agree with this, I can only think scarcity of options was a factor. A CEO can always replace the coach in year 2, 3.... it doesn't need to be upfront, particularly after our past 30 years (I work in banking and had something of a career at ANZ - the new guy made sure to get rid of 2 seniors, and there is clearly 1 that he must get rid of, but that is according to a timetable I think)

A year in which almost all of the top left or went backwards tells me we need a psyche refit and the Coach is the key person here. Was lucky enough to go to the Spirit of Carlton 1995 lunch where they talked about Parkin and the Psychologist aka handing over the reins aka who is in control. Just feels like a massive void here.

I think at some point we've just got stop trying to invent reasons/possibilities for why he's still here and accept whats been put right in front of us - the man chosen to run the club has determined that even IF Voss is a problem... he's a loooong way down the list of problems and addressing those problems first might very well enable him to succeed.

Its not salary related, its not because Ted Whitten wasnt available, its because GW thinks hes the right man or that he can be the right man with a bit of spring cleaning.

Yeah that was a dog act by Milburn. Probably rates in the top 5 against Carlton players just behind:

1. Clarkson breaking Aitkin’s jaw.
2. Magro’s hit on Jesaulenko at PP.
3. Matthews elbow to the back of Kenny Hunters head.

Have I missed any?

Balme hit on Southby 1973 Grand Final
Wallis taking out Hanna early in 1993 Grand Final

fair enough & agree, was just expressing concurrence with an earlier view.

Decision made now and we need to get behind it

Maybe this forum could do with a "Carlton nostalgia" thread...

Announce extension and captaincy in March next year.
He needs to get his body right and drop the superman antics he has copied from Cripps - the whole team needs to start playing as a team instead of individuals - which means there has to be a team game style put in place instead of this jagged makey uppy BS that makes my eyes bleed.

That will be my litmus test on Voss and the new regime.

The rumours are interesting - even if I'm still confused as to why the club gossips as much as the contestants on a reality dating show.

Wright seems to be enacting a vision that prioritises standards over ability, which makes sense for a club that might've indexed too great on the latter.

I'm still curious as to how Voss has survived this though. If standards have slipped or the vision been misplaced, then we've given a coach going into his 9th year a lot of rope. If it's unfair to use his first stint, fine, but increasingly we're finding that we can tell what coaches have it, pretty early on. And he didn't inherit a list in its infancy either.

Better assistant coaches will help cover his deficiencies, but if next year is a retool season, then we're leveraged pretty high on a coach to help mark that new transition, who might not be right guy.

It depends whether you think: acres, mcgovern, binns, motlop have greater ability than moneyball replacements.

This.

I can only presume they just decided it was too hard to cull him with a year left to run (and have to pay him out) and/or the person they wanted wasn't available now....

There is no way on God's earth GW thinks Voss is the right man to take us to a flag....

I think it’s because of 2 clear reasons:
1. This list has already gone through 3 coaches, turn the spotlight on the playing group for a change, and have been so hot and cold since Voss has come in it’s frightening. Can’t trust any of them except Cripps to put in week in and week out.
2. Voss has never had the right level of support in the coaching group. GW is working very hard to change that

I do t think it’s anything outside of the above, and I’m very happy and shocked the club just hasn’t gone the easy route and just sacked another coach.

And most new coaches want their own assistants. So what we're saying here is that all these new guys are gone in 12 months when GWs "preferred coach" is available? OR let me guess... these new hires are all being made 12 months in advance... they're the next coaches assistants...

Unfortunately for Binns his kicking ability is poor by AFL standards.
He can find the footy and has a great tank just cannot kick well enough and we have far too many on our list that just cant kick well enough.
Chesser has an elite kick and speed, we will just need to maintain his fitness to handle AFL Much higher upside in Chesser and he is a free hit so to say
Binns is like the rest of the kids coming through. Talented, but lacking in certain developed skills. When Binns finds space and time, he is accurate as hell. It’s just that in his few games, he hasn’t adapted to the speed of the game and he struggles to find space and time. If the west coast takes him, I would imagine that we will see him improving in all aspects of the game.

Now, as an aside, he turns 21 at the end of October. He was drafted in 22. He was the reserves best and fairs in 23. Physically, I would expect him to finish filling out next year. Skill wise, I really expect to see him improving hand over fist next year. Especially with a new development coach coming in or him going to another club.

As for Chesser, there were people saying that he was no good a couple of weeks ago and he’d just be a list clogger. If we trade Binns for Chesser, it’s a win win situation if both clubs get the player that fills a hole they need.
